Curing And Flow Of Thermosetting Resins For Composite Materials Pultrusion, Howard L. Price Jr. Apr 1979

Curing And Flow Of Thermosetting Resins For Composite Materials Pultrusion, Howard L. Price Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Fibrous composite materials for mechanical and structural applications often are expensive due to high labor costs. One economical way of making composites is pultrusion, a manufacturing process in which resin-impregnated fibers are pulled at a constant speed through a heated die which shapes the resin-fiber mass and cures the resin. Most of the work which has been done on the process has been of an empirical nature, with limited understanding of the process principles. Most of the experience with pultrusion has been gained with polyester resins and glass fibers. Very little experience has been gained with higher performance, more costly …

The Design And Construction Of A Flashlamp-Pumped Frequency-Doubled Dye Laser Applicable To Long Path Monitoring Of Air Pollutants, Joel Craig Johnson Mar 1979

The Design And Construction Of A Flashlamp-Pumped Frequency-Doubled Dye Laser Applicable To Long Path Monitoring Of Air Pollutants, Joel Craig Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

The subject of this thesis is the development of a laser light source which could be used in an air pollution monitor to measure the average concentration of sulfur dioxide gas over long paths (>1 km). Many of the problems encountered in designing a long-path pollutant monitor such as instrument cost and reliability, the selection of an optimum spectral region for making the measurement, and light losses due to scattering and turbulence, are considered. The result of these considerations together with a survey of available laser light sources suggested that a frequency-doubled dye laser possessed several advantages over other …

Energy And Cost Analysis Of Commercial Hvac Equipment: Offices And Hospitals, Robert E. Lyman Jr. Mar 1979

Energy And Cost Analysis Of Commercial Hvac Equipment: Offices And Hospitals, Robert E. Lyman Jr.

Masters Theses

A study was made to determine annual energy use in several typical heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for two commercial building types: offices and hospitals. The study was part of a program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop a model to predict energy use in the commercial sector of the United States. This study's objective is to define relationships between energy use and capital cost for commercial HVAC systems.

The NECAP computer program was used to analyze the HVAC systems' energy use. Both pre-embargo and current energy efficient HVAC system designs were modeled with several energy conservation …

Options For Machinery And Labour, A F. Herbert Jan 1979

Options For Machinery And Labour, A F. Herbert

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Machinery is one of the highest costs in farming today. It is not unusual for capital investment in machinery to be 20 to 30 percent of the total investment in the farm.

On an annual basis, expenditure directly attributable to machinery can be 40 per cent or more.

This article cannon be a panacea for everyone to reduce machinery costs - each farm is different. But some of the issues might be of help.

Matching Tractors And Implements, I W. Grevis-James

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Tractor and implement matching involves balancing implement load characteristics with tractor output characteristics to obtain the best output from the combination. Too much or too little can be costly.

How To Select A Tractor, W T. Brown Jan 1979

How To Select A Tractor, W T. Brown

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Machinery Crisis, W T. Brown Jan 1979

The Machinery Crisis, W T. Brown

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The machinery crisis - I believe we have come through a crisis in farming efficiency. To maintain his income, the farmer has had to reduce his costs of production, or increase production per man. He has done this by climbing to a new plateau of efficiency, and he expanded or got out; he has substituted capital for labour.

In many cases this means bigger, more powerful machinery. This is not a simple or easy move and there are many potential ways to mske the wrong decision.

Simplifying Lubricants For Farm Machinery, R A. Platt Jan 1979

Simplifying Lubricants For Farm Machinery, R A. Platt

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

All moving parts on machinery needs lubrication. With the rapid development in farm machinery and its attendant sophistifications, the stresses imposed on the lubricants have also increased.

This article looks at some of the changes in requirements and developments in lubricants available.

Getting The Best From Tractor Tyres, J Quealy Jan 1979

Getting The Best From Tractor Tyres, J Quealy

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The amount of pull a tractor develops depends largely on tyre efficiency and so with so many tyre size options for the one tractor model it is very easy to make the wrong decision on tyre fitment.

Tyre efficiency varies with tractor weight, soil conditions, inflation pressure and tyre size.

Hers we look at some of these factors and how changing them may affect efficiency.

The Flow Field Upstream Of A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine, K. Modarresi, R. H. Kirchhoff Jan 1979

The Flow Field Upstream Of A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine, K. Modarresi, R. H. Kirchhoff

Wind Energy Center Reports

A mathematical model is developed for a steady-state axi-symmetric upstream flow of a porous disc, in a uniform flow field . The special case of the upstream flow of a windmill, with and without a nacelle, is treated. First, the windmill is considered as a uniform distribution of sources and then as a linear distribution of sources. Solutions for the blade disc o f the wind field upstream are obtained in the form of stream1 ines and velocity vector components. Sample flow patterns upstream o f the blade disc o f the UMass 25 kW wind turbine are presented for …

Wind Field Analysis Around A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine, B. C. Donner, R. H. Kirchhoff Jan 1979

Wind Field Analysis Around A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine, B. C. Donner, R. H. Kirchhoff

Wind Energy Center Reports

The dynamic interaction between the WMass 25 kW wind turbine, WF-1, and the local, turbulent wind field is investigated. The integral length scale for wind speed gusts is found to range from 40 to 200 m. The system i s seen to behave as a low pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 0.03 Hz. Power i n the wind with gust frequencies below the cutoff frequency is available to the wind turbine. This represents approximately 70% of the total power in the turbulence, and about 5% of the total power in the wind. The power extraction is independent
of …

Performance Matching Of Hydraulic Energy Converters And Wind Turbines For Heating Purposes, M. G. Rolland Jr., Duane E. Cromack, William E. Heronemus Jan 1979

Performance Matching Of Hydraulic Energy Converters And Wind Turbines For Heating Purposes, M. G. Rolland Jr., Duane E. Cromack, William E. Heronemus

Wind Energy Center Reports

An investigation of a fluid brake device designed to convert wind energy to heat is reported for small to moderate size wind turbine applications. Fluid devices of three different geometries with vaned rotors were examined for power capacity and operating range. Converted size and geometry was related to rotational speed through a parametric study of the wind turbine and fluid energy converters. Wind tunnel tests, laboratory experiments, and analytic techniques lead to the development of three candidate hydraulic convertersmatching the 10m diameter Wind Furnace Model Four.
