Driven Pile Capacity In Clay And Drilled Shaft Capacity In Rock From Field Load Tests, Yasser A. Hegazy, Andrew G. Cushing, Christopher J. Lewis

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In this study, two case histories of deep foundations are discussed, including driven piles and drilled shafts. The first case history is an assessment of driven pile capacity in clay. As part of selecting the deep foundation system, steel pipe, concrete, and timber piles were driven at the site. Static compression and uplift load tests were performed on the concrete and timber piles, while only static compression tests were performed on the steel pipe piles. Measured pile capacities from the static load tests were compared to predicted pile capacities, which were obtained from empirical design methods employing laboratory and in-situ …

Settlements Of Three Buildings Founded On Stratified Soils, Enrico Conte, Giovanni Dente, Antonello Troncone Apr 2004

Settlements Of Three Buildings Founded On Stratified Soils, Enrico Conte, Giovanni Dente, Antonello Troncone

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper describes the movements experienced by three residential buildings located in Avellino (South Italy). A common feature of the buildings is the unsymmetrical superstructure that, for lack of construction joints, makes the resultant of the vertical loads on foundation to be highly eccentric. At the end of December 1983, when most of the dead loads had been applied, the buildings exhibited conspicuous settlements, so construction was stopped and the vertical displacement of several points of the foundation was measured during a period of almost one year. The subsoil was investigated by boreholes, CPT and conventional laboratory tests; it consists …

Landslide Monitoring And Remediation – A Case History, Fan Xi, William Broderick, Paul Rizzo, Jeffery Bair Apr 2004

Landslide Monitoring And Remediation – A Case History, Fan Xi, William Broderick, Paul Rizzo, Jeffery Bair

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

An ancient landslide is situated in the vicinity of one of the two reservoirs of a pumped storage power project. Ground movements of the landslide accelerated following the construction of the reservoirs about thirty years ago. Though at a relatively low rate of movement, the active landslide jeopardizes the serviceability of transmission lines and roads traveling through the landslide area. The landslide also poses a potential threat to the adjacent reservoir. Based on long-term monitoring and thorough engineering investigations, remedial measures were developed and implemented in an effort to stabilize the active landslide. Different facets of the remediation construction were …

A Fem Seepage Analysis For Upstream Cofferdam Of Xiluodu Hydraulic Power Station, Ga Zhang, Jian-Min Zhang

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The upstream cofferdam of Xiluodu hydraulic power station project, with height of 72 meters, is designed as the main body of the project. It is characterized by its high retaining water head, short construction period and complex geological conditions. Presented in this paper is a three-dimensional FEM analysis used to investigate the seepage behavior of the upstream cofferdam for two different design schemes. In the analysis, the cracks in cut-off wall which may be caused in construction are also properly considered. Based on 3D seepage model of saturated-unsaturated flow for non-uniform soils, a fixed-mesh FEM is used in the seepage …

Rock Mass Evaluation Of The Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) Dam And Underground Powerhouse, India, Indra Prakash, Nikhil Desai

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical evaluation of the 163 m high concrete gravity Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) dam, under construction, and 1200 MW underground powerhouse (210m x 23m x 57.5m) and its ancillary structures has been done. The dam and powerhouse sites are occupied by basalt flows underlain by infra-trappean sedimentary rocks (Bagh beds) intruded by basic dykes. The area is structurally complex and seismically active. Intra-formational shears and sub-horizontal to low dipping weak layers like red bole, tuff, argillaceous sandstone having low values of shear parameters posed the problem of sliding stability of dam blocks. Concrete shear keys were provided as one of the …

Cherry Island. Assessing The Behavior Of A Large Landfill Using Geotechnical Instrumentation, Darrell Wilder, Allen Cadden, Jesús Gómez, Anne M. Germain Apr 2004

Cherry Island. Assessing The Behavior Of A Large Landfill Using Geotechnical Instrumentation, Darrell Wilder, Allen Cadden, Jesús Gómez, Anne M. Germain

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The 513-acre Cherry Island Landfill is located at the junction of the Delaware and Christina Rivers near Wilmington, Delaware. Today the landfill receives approximately 1,850 tons of waste per day. The landfill was constructed directly on soft dredge materials and river deposits which act as a natural liner. Due to the unique geotechnical characteristics at the site, potentially large deformation and slope stability were concerns during the planning and development of the landfill due to the expected high rates of waste placement. Slope stability and finite difference analysis were performed to develop adequate filling plans to cope with the expected …

Shear Strength Of Franciscan Complex Melange As Calculated From Back-Analysis Of A Landslide, Carl Kim, Charles Smell, Edmund Medley Apr 2004

Shear Strength Of Franciscan Complex Melange As Calculated From Back-Analysis Of A Landslide, Carl Kim, Charles Smell, Edmund Medley

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A methodology was developed to evaluate causation of a complex landslide that occurred in Franciscan Complex melange during the winter of 1996-1997 in San Mateo County, California. Conventional back-analysis methods to evaluate shear strength parameters were insufficient because the basal failure plane traversed three materials (fill, block-poor melange, and block-rich melange). Instead, using field observations of landslide kinematics, review of available subsurface data, and previous experience with Franciscan melange, a methodology was developed that incorporates the location of critical failure surfaces generated by random search routines in PCSTABL5M as an additional constraint. The methodology was employed to evaluate the relative …

Investigation And Control Of Narayanbagar Landslide, District Chamoli, Uttaranchal, India – A Case Study, Pankaj Gupta, Deepak Mukherjee, P. K. Sikdar, Kishor Kumar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Incidences of landslide hazards are quite common in the hilly terrain of Himalayas. These landslides not only damage the hill slopes causing enormous loss of slope forming materials but also become responsible for creating frequent disturbances to the moving traffics on hill roads and consequent adverse socio-economic impacts to the communities. As road communication system is the only lifeline for the people residing in the hilly terrain of Himalayas, detailed scientific study of landslide-affected area is , therefore, very much essential to overcome all sorts of geo-environmental and socio-economic problems created by the landslide. Numbers of landslides have already occurred …

Thissavros Hydropower Plant Managing Geotechnical Problems In The Construction, K. Anastassopoulos, E. Hoek, V. Milligan, W. Riemer

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Thissavros hydropower and pumped storage project on the Nestos river in northern Greece involved construction of a 172 m high rockfill dam and an underground power house with 300 MW installed capacity. Bedrock at the site consists of gneiss with complex geological structure and complicated hydrogeological conditions. On the right abutment, the dam partially rests on a large landslide and the toe of another large landslide extends into the plunge pool from the left bank. Initial excavations activated the dormant slides. Unloading, buttressing and drainage successfully stabilized the landslides. Core material for the dam is a silty sand and …

Expreriment Of Seismic Failure Of A Long Embankment, Seiji Kano, Yasushi Sasaki, Yoshiya Hata Apr 2004

Expreriment Of Seismic Failure Of A Long Embankment, Seiji Kano, Yasushi Sasaki, Yoshiya Hata

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Seismic damage to long structures such as river dikes, fill-type dams, and road embankments has been sometimes found to take place at locally limited spot. Local failures of a long embankment during an earthquake are mainly due to heterogeneous ground condition. However there are some cases that local failures were took place even though the ground condition was homogeneous. One of the factors causing local failures under such conditions may be the three dimensional response of the embankment. In this paper, the typical failure of the Kushiro River dike is reported. This paper aims to clarify the influence of three-dimensional …

Shear Strength Characteristics Of Heavily Glaciated Soils Of Chugach Range, Sukhmander Singh Apr 2004

Shear Strength Characteristics Of Heavily Glaciated Soils Of Chugach Range, Sukhmander Singh

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

As a part of the evaluation of the stability of cut slope of 55% grade, during the construction of Trans-Alaska pipeline, it was realized that the estimation of the strength characteristics of the glaciated till forming the slopes is vital to the analysis and the design of these slopes. Accordingly undisturbed samples were hand carved from block samples and were tested fro shear strength. An usually high effective angles of friction, 45° - 48° (Singh, 1976) were obtained. However, these high values of friction were found to be inconsistent with the maximum angle which the cut slopes can withstand. The …

Shear Wave Velocity And Its Effect On Seismic Design Forces And Liquefaction Assessment, Thomas G. Thomann, Khaled Chowdhury Apr 2004

Shear Wave Velocity And Its Effect On Seismic Design Forces And Liquefaction Assessment, Thomas G. Thomann, Khaled Chowdhury

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The shear wave velocity of soil and rock is one of the key components in establishing the design esponse spectra, and therefore the seismic design forces, for a building, bridge, or other structure. The shear wave velocity can be measured from in-situ field tests, such as cross-hole or downhole testing. The shear wave velocity can also be estimated based on empirical correlations with other field collected information. This paper presents case histories from 8 bridge projects performed in the northeastern United States where in-situ measurements of shear wave velocities were performed for site-specific ground motion studies. A comparison of these …

Induced Seismic Impacts Observed In Coastal Area Of Albania: Case Studies, Siasi Kociu Apr 2004

Induced Seismic Impacts Observed In Coastal Area Of Albania: Case Studies, Siasi Kociu

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Adriatic coastal area of Albania, as one of the most seismic areas of Albania, where the most of the population of the country is concentrated, is characterized by flat topographic conditions with many sandy beaches and lagoons, filled by recent Quaternary sediments of thickness from 100-150 m, down to bedrocks with shallow underground water level. During recent earthquakes many liquefaction phenomena of interest were observed in this area. The liquefaction phenomena during the great earthquake of April 15, 1979(Ms=6.9, Io=IX degrees) were detected and studied personally by the author and presented in this paper. Based on those data and …

Back Analysis Of The Liquefaction Failure At King Harbor Redondo Beach, California, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos, Stavros G. Aneroussis Apr 2004

Back Analysis Of The Liquefaction Failure At King Harbor Redondo Beach, California, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos, Stavros G. Aneroussis

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

During recent earthquakes small dams and embankments suffered large settlements as a result of earthquake-induced liquefaction. One such case is the mole embankment that settled about 1.2m and was displaced horizontally by about 2m at King Harbor Redondo Beach, California as a result of the Northridge earthquake of 1994 (Kerwin and Stone, 1997). The conventional sliding-block model has shortcomings in back-estimating the critical acceleration and corresponding strength of such earthquake-induced slides when seismic displacement is large. The reason is that the change on geometry of the sliding mass, that greatly affects the seismic displacement, is not modeled. Stamatopoulos et al …

The Role Of Geotechnical Factors In Northridge Earthquake Residential Damage, Neven Matasovic, Jack Caldwell, Paul Guptill

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

On three projects, one a class action law suit and two involving readjustment of insurance claims, we evaluated the impact of the 1994 Mw 6.7 Northridge, California earthquake on over 1,600 residential properties. For each of the properties, we reviewed previous reports on the condition of the site immediately after the earthquake, undertook a site visit to observe current conditions, undertook site-specific geotechnical investigations, as appropriate, and documented our findings on the impact of long-term and earthquakerelated geotechnical factors on property damage. We have identified the following significant geotechnical factors that contribute to residential earthquake damage: (a) hillside sites; (b) …

A Landslide In Glacial Soils Of New Jersey, James Talerico, John R. Schuring, Raj P. Khera Apr 2004

A Landslide In Glacial Soils Of New Jersey, James Talerico, John R. Schuring, Raj P. Khera

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

On August 13, 2000, a massive landslide occurred in Northern New Jersey following an extreme rainfall event during which at least 381mm (15 in) of precipitation fell during a 4-day period. The composite earth slide-earth flow, with an estimated volume of 22,800 m3 (29,821 yd3) traveled up to 365 m (1200 ft) in a short period. While landslides do occasionally occur along the coastal bluffs of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, slides of this magnitude are uncommon in the glacial soils of the New Jersey Highlands section, where the slide occurred. A geotechnical investigation was undertaken to identify the causative factors …

Seismic Response Analysis Of Historical Towns Rising On Rock Slabs Overlying A Clayey Substratum, G. Lanzo, L. Olivares, F. Silvestri, P. Tommasi Apr 2004

Seismic Response Analysis Of Historical Towns Rising On Rock Slabs Overlying A Clayey Substratum, G. Lanzo, L. Olivares, F. Silvestri, P. Tommasi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Two case histories are presented which refer to the historical towns of Orvieto and Bisaccia, both located on top of rock buttes overlying a more deformable clayey substratum. The comparison of the two case histories indicates that apparently similar geological conditions do not lead to the same type of seismic response. In fact, the specific physical and dynamic properties of the substratum and the overlying slab can determine different seismic behaviour at the hill top and at the rock-clay interface. In particular, at Bisaccia a deamplification of the seismic motion at the hill top was predicted, as well as the …

Liquefaction Potential Of The Hydrotechnical Dikes Foundation Ground, A. Chirica, A. Olteanu, M. S. Serbulea

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The complex hydrotechnical works achieved upon the lower basin of the Olt river, within the southern part of Romania, imposed the building of several large reservoirs situated within the geo-morphological unit of the above named river flood plane. During the last years, due to the recent earthquakes that affected Romania, the macro-earthquake zoning of the country was changed. In these conditions, the problem of studying the stability of dikes foundation ground from the liquefaction point of view has raised. The paper presents the survey done in site and laboratory tests performed in order to determine most accurately, the natural ground …

Observations Of Site Amplification And Liquefaction In The Jun 23, 2001, Southern Peru Earthquake, Adrian Rodriguez-Marek, Joseph Wartman, Pedro C. Repetto, Jennifer L. Williams

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Mw 8.4 Southern Peru Earthquake of June 23, 2001 caused extensive damage in a widespread area in southern Peru and northern Chile, including several important population centers. Damage in some of these cities was correlated with local soil conditions and topography, suggesting the influence of local site amplification effects in damage distributions. The earthquake caused numerous instances of other types of geotechnical related ground failures, including liquefaction and lateral spreads in river valleys, seismic compression of highway fills, and slope failures. This work focuses on case histories documenting site amplification and liquefaction in the Southern Peru earthquake. Among …

Behavior Of A Friction-Piled Box Foundation For An Urban Bridge In Mexico City Clay, Manuel J. Mendoza, Miguel P. Romo, Marcos Orozco

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Severe seismic effects and regional ground subsidence are well recognized conditions that should be considered for the design of foundations in Mexico City. These phenomena are magnified by lacustrine clayey soft deposits with very high compressibility and very low shear strength, which are found at the extensive Lake Zone of the city. To clarify the soil-structure interaction phenomena, a prototype foundation was instrumented, selecting a friction-piled support of an urban bridge located in the Metropolitan area of Mexico City. Soil-raft contact pressures, loads on selected piles, and pore water pressures in the subsoil below the foundation have been monitored continuously, …

Shaking Table Tests On Effiency Of New Type Of Drains, Vlatko Sesov, Ikuo Towhata, Naoyuki Harada Apr 2004

Shaking Table Tests On Effiency Of New Type Of Drains, Vlatko Sesov, Ikuo Towhata, Naoyuki Harada

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

One method to mitigate liquefaction-induced hazard is the use of a system of vertical drains to dissipate the excess pore water pressure generated by earthquake loading. Performance assessments for these systems require the estimation of vertical drain spacing such that a maximum threshold level of excess pore pressure ratio is not exceeded. The objective of this research is to study efficiency of installing vertical drains on generation and dissipation of pore water pressure. For this purpose series of shaking table tests were performed using a laminar box, in Geotechnical Laboratory on Tokyo University. The ground model consists of two layers …

Measurements And Numerical Prediction Of High Speed Train Vibrations, Janusz Kogut, Geert Degrande, Geert Lombaert, Lincy Pyl, Wim Haegeman, Lutz Karl Apr 2004

Measurements And Numerical Prediction Of High Speed Train Vibrations, Janusz Kogut, Geert Degrande, Geert Lombaert, Lincy Pyl, Wim Haegeman, Lutz Karl

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper discusses the experimental validation of a numerical prediction model for train induced vibrations. The model fully accounts for the dynamic interaction between the train, the track and the soil. The track is modelled as a longitudinally invariant system, where two beams represent the rails, while a plate with a rigid cross section represents the subgrade. The track is located at the surface of a horizontally layered elastic halfspace. The translational invariance of the problem geometry enables a solution of the equations of motion in the frequency–wavenumber domain. The model is validated by means of vibration measurements that have …

Measurement Of Vibration In Berthing Structure During Underwater Rock Blasting, A. Boominathan, R. Sundaravadivelu, C. K. Madheswaran

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Blasting, in particular underwater rock blasting is the most challenging and least understood source of vibration, which may cause considerable damage to the safety of the adjacent buildings and structures and including berthing structures. Though the blast-induced vibration is best controlled by specification of blasting procedures, it is very essential to measure and monitor the blast-induced vibration of the adjacent structures to access its safety. This paper discusses the measurement and monitoring of underwater blast induced vibration on the berthing structure (berth No.8) at Tuticorin in southern part of India. The vibration is recorded using three acceleration transducers mounted on …

Recent earthquakes in Colombia have shown the great importance of landslide triggering. Considering these conditions, a study was carried out to develop a methodology for zonification of slope stability under earthquakes, based on representative variables of geomorphology, geology and soil profiles. This methodology covered compilation of existing information about geological, geomorphologic and geotechnical studies, analyses of earthquake ground response, definition of dynamic behavior of representative soil profiles, and development of topographical and geotechnical models taking full advantage of Geographical Information System (GIS) tools. This paper describes the resulting GIS methodology and discusses its reliability, based on its application to simulate …

A Case Of Soil Sliding In The Pathology Of Retaining Structure, J. Matos E Silva Apr 2004

A Case Of Soil Sliding In The Pathology Of Retaining Structure, J. Matos E Silva

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Sesimbra is a village located on the Portuguese West coastline 70 Km South of Lisbon. It is a site of high cliffs, overlooking the sea, mainly formed by clays. The rainwater that penetrates the soil through permeable layers originates the clays sliding. Recent construction site in the area started with the execution of a retaining wall with counterforts. Some time later after a long rainy period the soil sliding created a high earth pressure on the retaining wall that originated the separation between the wall and its counterforts. The paper describes the pathology and its repair.

A Database For Case Histories And Numerical Modelling, P. Mestat, Y. Riou

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper deals with a bibliographic database dedicated to the comparison between numerical results and in situ measurements for geotechnical structures. This database, called MOMIS, has been developed by LCPC and ECN for several years. To date, it comprises a total of 416 case histories. The generation of MOMIS has relied on a technologic watch in the field of numerical modelling. The database can be used to highlight modelling principles (in order to provide a guide for good modelling practice to users) and deviations between results given by numerical models and values measured on actual geotechnical structures. It also reflects …

Deep Supported Excavation In Difficult Ground Conditions In The City Of Patras, Greece — Measured Vs. Predicted Behavior, D. P. Zekkos, A. G. Athanasopoulos, G. A. Athanasopoulos Apr 2004

Deep Supported Excavation In Difficult Ground Conditions In The City Of Patras, Greece — Measured Vs. Predicted Behavior, D. P. Zekkos, A. G. Athanasopoulos, G. A. Athanasopoulos

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The technical characteristics of a deep supported excavation project using anchored diaphragm walls and the measured (by inclinometers) behavior of the soil retaining system are presented. The measured behavior is then compared with the predicted behavior using a finite element model of the excavation. The comparison shows a good agreement in a location where the soil profile is well defined. However, differences in the magnitude of the displacements were observed when the information on the soil profile was incomplete due to the variability of the deposits on site.
