A Probabilistic Method For The Prediction Of Earthquake-Induced Slope Displacements, Simone Barani, Paolo Bazzurro, Fabrizio Pelli May 2010

A Probabilistic Method For The Prediction Of Earthquake-Induced Slope Displacements, Simone Barani, Paolo Bazzurro, Fabrizio Pelli

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This work presents a probabilistic method for estimating earthquake-induced nonlinear slope displacements. This method is applicable to any kind of slope, embankment and earth/rockfill dam. When coupled with Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis at the slope site, it produces estimates of the annual probability that a permanent deformation of the slope will be exceeded. The proposed method uses a set of 2D numerical analyses with non-linear constitutive relationships for the soil formations to establish a probabilistic relationship between one or more ground motion parameters and the permanent displacement at a specific location within the slope. The analyses, which are performed using …

Accuracy Of Empirical Equations Predicting Sliding-Block Displacement, Tryfon Thomaidis, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos May 2010

Accuracy Of Empirical Equations Predicting Sliding-Block Displacement, Tryfon Thomaidis, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The sliding-block model forms the basis of simple models predicting permanent co-seismic shear displacements of soils. For excitations consisting of actual accelerograms, different parameters of the applied motion have been used and different expressions have been proposed by researchers. Recently, many accelerograms have been recorded and these accelerograms are available in internet sites. These accelerograms allow the investigation of the accuracy of the expressions described above, some of which were based in a small number of accelerograms. In the present work the accuracy of empirical equations predicting sliding-block displacement is studied thru the application of 101 accelerograms covering a wide …

Assessing Horizontal Seismic Coefficients In Earth Dams With Regards To Expected Deformation, Mohammad Hossein Tavakol, Ali Komak Panah May 2010

Assessing Horizontal Seismic Coefficients In Earth Dams With Regards To Expected Deformation, Mohammad Hossein Tavakol, Ali Komak Panah

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

One of the most important aspects that must be considered in design of embankment dams is to assess their stability during seismic events. When employing sophisticated approaches like finite element method for dynamic analysis of the mentioned structures against earthquake attacks, difficulties in evaluation of input parameters may exist. Hence employing simpler approaches like pseudo static method are still preferred by some designers. However, there is a problem associated with the pseudo static procedure as there is no organized technique for precise evaluation of horizontal seismic coefficient. Moreover, this method applies "safety factor" for the stability evaluations which is not …

Assessment Of Soil-Nailed Excavations Seismic Failure Under Cyclic Loading And Pseudo-Static Forces, Ali Komak Panah, Sina Majidian

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In this paper two numerical analysis methods (i.e. cyclic time history and pseudo-static) are applied to simulate the seismic behaviour and failure mechanism of soil-nailed structures. The numerical simulations are performed by using a finite difference software (Flac). Nevada sand soil parameters are used and construction sequences of nailed-structures are simulated prior to the cyclic and pseudo-static analyses. The results revealed that the failure pattern of two kinds of analyses are approximately similar and comprised of bilinear sliding surfaces. Furthermore, good agreement is found between failure pattern of two types of numerical analyses and previous experimental tests. based on comparison …

Dynamic Slope Stability Analysis By A Reliability-Based Approach, Dalia S. Youssef Abdel Massih, Abdul-Hamid Soubra, Jacques Harb, Mohamed Rouainia

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The analysis of earth slopes situated in seismic areas has been extensively investigated in literature using deterministic approaches where average values of the input parameters are used and a global safety factor or a permanent displacement at the toe of the slope is calculated. In these approaches, a decoupled analysis is usually performed in which a constant critical seismic acceleration is first calculated based on a pseudo-static representation of earthquake effects. Then, the permanent soil displacement is computed by integration of the real acceleration record above the critical acceleration. A reliability-based approach for the seismic slope analysis is introduced in …

Earthquake Induced Slope Failure Simulation By Sph, Ha H. Bui, R. Fukagawa, K. Sako, Y. Okamura

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Majority of slope stability, slope displacement and soil liquefaction analyses subjected to earthquake loading condition employed the finite element method (FEM) as the standard numerical tool. However, mechanism of soil failure in such condition often involved extremely large deformation and failure behaviors, which were unable to be modeled by FEM since this method was suffered from the grid distortion. In an attempt to overcome this limitation, we present herein our first attempt to extend the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method to analyze slope failure behavior due to seismic shaking. For the sake of simplicity, effect of pore-water pressure was not …

Effect Of A Slope On The Dynamic Properties Of Diluvial Terrace, Shoichi Nakai, Yoko Nagata, Toru Sekiguchi

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

It is well known that landform influences the behavior of the ground during earthquakes. The objective of this study is to clarify the effect of a slope on the dynamic properties of diluvial terrace based on ground investigations, seismic motion observations and twodimensional finite element analyses, by choosing a target area that has a landform typical to the southern Kanto plain in Japan. Through the study, the followings were found: (1) Due to a weak soil along the slope, amplification becomes very large, but the area of influence is relatively small. (2) Amplification due to ground irregularity itself is relatively …

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper presents an improved methodology for estimating seismic coefficients for the pseudo-static stability analysis of earth dams, which is based on a statistical analysis of input data and results for 112 potential failure surfaces, as estimated from 28 two dimensional seismic response analyses for eight (8) different zoned earth dams and high embankments. The new methodology employs design diagrams and equations and estimates the maximum and the effective seismic coefficients as a function of: (a) the peak ground acceleration at the free-field surface of the foundation soil, (b) the predominant period of the seismic excitation, (c) the eigenperiod of …

Incorporation Of The Spatial Correlation Of Arias Intensity Within Earthquake Loss Estimation, Roxane Foulser-Piggott, Peter J. Stafford May 2010

Incorporation Of The Spatial Correlation Of Arias Intensity Within Earthquake Loss Estimation, Roxane Foulser-Piggott, Peter J. Stafford

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Arias Intensity (Ia) has been identified as an efficient intensity measure for the purpose of estimating the likelihood and extent of landslides. This efficiency implies that Arias intensity may logically be used within earthquake loss estimation applications in order to ultimately estimate the damage to spatially-distributed systems or portfolios. In order to estimate the effects of ground motions on such spatially-distributed systems it is important to take into account the spatial correlation of the intensity measure. However, existing landslide loss-estimation models, which use Ia as an input, do not take this aspect of the ground motion into account. …

Nonlinear Time-Domain Analysis Of A Sliding Block On A Plane, Mohamed G. Arab, Edward Kavazanjian Jr., Neven Matasovic

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A time domain finite difference numerical model of a sliding rigid block on a plane is developed using a simple elastic-perfectly plas-tic Mohr-Coulomb interface model. The model is shown to accurately predict the slip-stick and slip-slip behavior deduced from an analytical solution for behavior of a sliding block on a horizontal plane and the results of physical model tests of a block on both hori-zontal and inclined planes subject to harmonic and non-uniform excitation provided the appropriate interface strength is employed. Back analyses of the physical model tests show that for some geosynthetic interfaces, the interface shear strength depends upon …

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In current years the use of asphaltic concrete core dams are increased especially in some areas with shortage of clayey materials. These dams also have less earth work in comparison with clay core dams. Despite of many advantages of this kind of dam in compression of other types, the behavior of these dams against earthquakes and seismic condition isn't clearly specified. In this research using CA2 program (Finite difference Code) Some numerical studies about the behavior of asphaltic concrete core dams with various height and slopes to understand the influence of dam geometry on behavior of these dams under earthquake …

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Frequent and widespread flooding is a major problem in Assam, which is a north-eastern state of India. The problem is caused mainly by the Brahmaputra river whose erratic riverbank erosion has been leading to general widening of channels and large-scale instability of banks. In the last century, the river has widened by more than 50% in several stretches causing serious threat to nearby urban centres apart from eroding several thousand hectares of fertile agricultural land including tea gardens. As of now, the width between outer banks ranges from as low as 1.2 km at some sections to as high as …

Static And Dynamic Behavior Of Earthen Slopes In The Region Of Uttarkashi, India, Govardhan Bhat, Navjeev Saxena, S. K. Prasad

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Earthen slopes experience considerable degradation in strength and stiffness during seismic activities. Past earthquakes have revealed the development of landslide and permanent movement of earth mass towards downstream. In this paper, a finite element analysis using GEOSLOPE on earthen slopes under static and dynamic loading due to earthquake has been carried out. The earthen slope is idealized as a plane strain two-dimensional model and base acceleration in the form of typical earthquake motion is represented as external loading. The performance of the slope including the stresses and displacements are analyzed. Further, the focus is on the determination of permanent displacement …

The Effect Of Geometry Changes On Sliding-Block Predictions, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos, Constantine Mavromihalis, Sarada Sarma May 2010

The Effect Of Geometry Changes On Sliding-Block Predictions, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos, Constantine Mavromihalis, Sarada Sarma

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The sliding-block model is often used for the prediction of permanent co-seismic displacements of slopes and earth structures. This model assumes motion in an inclined plane but does not consider the decrease in inclination of the sliding soil mass as a result of its downward motion, which is the usual state in the field. The paper studies the above effect and proposes an empirical equation correcting the predictions of the sliding-block model. The investigation is performed using the recently-developed multi-block model.

An Analytical Solution For Pile-Soil-Pile Interaction With Unequal Embedded Lengths Under Vertical Harmonic Vibrations, Mahmoud Ghazavi, Pedram Ravanshenas

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Piles are normally constructed in groups such that they are located in the vicinity of each other. As a result, the response of piles is different from that of an isolated pile. In this paper, the interaction between two piles with unequal lengths in the group is investigated using an analytical solution. The elastic theory model and dynamic winkler model are use to characterise vertical isolated prismatic piles subjected to vertical harmonic vibrations. The results obtained for pile-soil-pile interaction from this solution account for unequal lengths for the two piles. In addition, it has been found that upon loading the …

Soil nailing is an efficient method to stabilize different soil structures. The method has been extensively used for improving stability of slopes. The construction process of Soil nailed walls commonly involve three basic sections: excavation, nail installation and face stabilization. The nail bars are inserted into ground by either drilling or grouting and are usually arranged in both horizontal and vertical directions. Present research intends to understand Soil-nailed wall behavior under dynamic excitations. Employing finite difference method a three dimensional model has been developed in the proper finite difference code. Soil constitutive behavior for dynamic analyses is predicted taking into …

In this paper different approaches aimed at investigating the dynamic behaviour of circular tunnels in the transverse direction are presented. The analysed cases refer to a shallow tunnel built in an ideal soft clayey deposit. The adopted approaches include one-dimensional (1D) numerical analyses performed modelling the soil as a single phase visco-elastic non-linear medium, the results of which are then used to evaluate the input data for selected analytical solutions proposed in the literature (uncoupled approach), and 2D fully coupled Finite Element simulations adopting visco-elastic and visco-elasto-plastic constitutive assumptions for the soil and the lining (coupled approach). The results are …

Effect Of Elastic And Inelastic Dssi On Seismic Demands Of Sdofs Structures, Esteban Sáez, Fernando López-Caballero, Arézou Modaressi-Farahmand-Razavi

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In general, under earthquake loading, the soil reaches the limit of its elastic behavior before the structural elements. Thus, an earthquake analysis approach assuming inelastic structural behavior under fixed base condition or with elastic dynamic soil-structure interaction (DSSI) hypothesis may be inadapted. This paper describes the investigation conducted in order to define the contribution of the pure elastic DSSI effects in the complete inelastic DSSI problem. With this purpose, a comparative analysis between elastic and inelastic soil behavior assumptions for two inelastic single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structures and two soils is carried out. The results point out that, in general, inelastic soil …

Effect Of Liquefaction On Pile Shaft Friction Capacity, M. E. Stringer, S. P. G. Madabhushi May 2010

Effect Of Liquefaction On Pile Shaft Friction Capacity, M. E. Stringer, S. P. G. Madabhushi

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Piled foundations are commonly used worldwide, and observed failures of these foundations during earthquakes has led to active research in this area. However, the way in which piles support axial loads during earthquakes is still not fully understood. In this paper, the results from centrifuge tests are presented which consider how axial loads are carried by piles during earthquake loading. It will be shown that the piles in dry soils mobilise additional shaft friction to carry the seismically induced axial loading. However, in the case of a pile group passing through a liquefiable soil layer and founded in a dense …

Evaluation Of Deformation Behavior Of Quay Walls Under Earthquake Loading, Masoomeh Khodabakhshi, Mohammad Hassan Baziar May 2010

Evaluation Of Deformation Behavior Of Quay Walls Under Earthquake Loading, Masoomeh Khodabakhshi, Mohammad Hassan Baziar

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Ports are often regional economic centers and important components of regional and local transportation lifeline systems. Because of these reasons, the downtime of the ports due to natural disaster such as an earthquake results in severe economic loss. Gravity quay walls are the most common type of construction for docks because of their durability, ease of construction and capacity to reach deep seabed levels. Past earthquakes demonstrated that the seismic behavior of port structures such as quay walls was significantly governed by the properties of soils. The 1995 Hyogoken- Nanbu (Kobe) Earthquake brought great damage to structures in the Port …

The performance and behavior of reinforced soil structure, both in the field and the laboratory are well documented. In the field situation, when the reinforced sand beds are used as a construction tool or as a ground improvement method, it is often the situation that they are subjected to the effect of water. In this study series of repeated load tests were conducted on mild steel square footing of 100mm size resting on a sand bed placed in a 500mm-dia, 390mm deep mild steel tank. Reinforcement location and spacing were selected based on optimization of previous research results. The sand …

Fem Modelling Of A 3d Soil-Pile System Under Earthquakes, Francesco Grassi, Maria Rossella Massimino May 2010

Fem Modelling Of A 3d Soil-Pile System Under Earthquakes, Francesco Grassi, Maria Rossella Massimino

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

During earthquakes seismic wave crossing through soft soil can lead to significant curvatures on pile foundations, which in turn lead to significant bending moments. These bending moments are commonly named “kinematic bending moments”, to be distinguished from the “inertial bending moments” due to horizontal forces transferred from superstructures to pile heads. Approaches to carefully evaluate inertial bending moments have been recently developed world-wide; but the evaluation of the kinematic bending moments is still questionable. In this paper a 3D soil-pile FEM system is analysed. The system is subjected to seismic input motions, applied at the base of the system, which …

Fixity Of Piles In Liquefiable Soils, Domenico Lombardi, Maria Giovanna Durante, Suresh R. Dash, Subhamoy Bhattacharya May 2010

Fixity Of Piles In Liquefiable Soils, Domenico Lombardi, Maria Giovanna Durante, Suresh R. Dash, Subhamoy Bhattacharya

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Recent researches have shown that piles are laterally unsupported in liquefiable soils during most strong earthquakes. If this unsupported length is significantly large, the high axial load on piles may make them more vulnerable to buckling instability. Calculation of buckling instability requires the full unsupported length of pile, which is the sum of pile length above the ground, pile length in the liquefied soil and a depth of fixity below the liquefied soil layer. In this paper, the length of fixity of pile foundations embedded in liquefiable soils has been investigated using a simple numerical method. The finite element program …
