Constitutive Model For Rate Dependent Behavior Of Clay Internal Geotechnical Report 2011-3, Harry Martindale, Dipanjan Basu Aug 2011

Constitutive Model For Rate Dependent Behavior Of Clay Internal Geotechnical Report 2011-3, Harry Martindale, Dipanjan Basu

Technical Reports

This report presents a strain-rate dependent plastic constitutive model for clays. Based on the concepts of critical-state soil mechanics and bounding surface plasticity theory, the model reproduces the mechanical response of clays under multi-axial loading conditions and predicts both the drained and undrained behavior. The model parameters are determined for Boston Blue Clay, London Clay and Kaolin Clay, and the performance of the model in simulating the mechanical response of these clays is demonstrated for low to medium strain rates. The sensitivity of each model parameter is checked by perturbing the calibrated values by ±20%. Subsequently, a probabilistic analysis using …

Spatio-Temporal Variations In Soil Moisture And Physicochemical Properties Of A Typical Semiarid Sand-Meadow-Desert Landscape As Influenced By Land Use, L. Duan, T. Liu, X. Wang, G. Wang, L. Ma, Y. Luo

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A good understanding of the interrelations between land cover alteration and changes in hydrologic conditions (e.g., soil moisture) as well as soil physicochemical properties (e.g., fine soil particles and nutrients) is crucial for maintaining the fragile hydrologic and environmental conditions of semiarid land, such as the Horqin Sandy Land in China, but is lacking in existing literature. The objectives of this study were to examine: (1) spatio-temporal variations of soil moisture and physicochemical properties in semiarid land; and (2) how those variations are influenced by land cover alteration. Using the data collected in a 9.71 km2 well-instrumented area of the …

The Importance Of Creating Value In Seismic Design, Barnali Ghosh, Zygmunt Lubkowski, Jack Pappin May 2010

The Importance Of Creating Value In Seismic Design, Barnali Ghosh, Zygmunt Lubkowski, Jack Pappin

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Major earthquakes have resulted in devastating consequences in terms of human and economic loss. In almost all the earthquakes we observe the failure of structures, sometimes due to poor construction but also due to designers not identifying the specific geo-hazards (iIntensity of ground motion, faults, liquefaction, slopes etc) which affect these structures. In many cases these damages could have been avoided if the original design had correctly identified the geohazards at the site and incorporated the philosophy of performance based design. In this paper several examples will be presented where the different stages of risk assessment will be identified and …

Effect Of Canyon Geometry And Ground Conditions On The Seismic Performance Of Tendaho Earthfill Dam In Ethiopia., Tensay G. Berhe, Wu Wei May 2010

Effect Of Canyon Geometry And Ground Conditions On The Seismic Performance Of Tendaho Earthfill Dam In Ethiopia., Tensay G. Berhe, Wu Wei

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The seismic performance of earth dams is usually studied by two dimensional (2D) space. However, considerable judgment is required to estimate the overall three dimensional dynamic response of dams in a narrow canyon from plane strain analyses of individual sections of the dam. This is so because the plane strain analysis normally ignores the arching effect of the valley which is particularly relevant for dams in narrow valleys. Because of the arching action, the effect of the canyon geometry on the dynamic response of earth dams will be a stiffening of the system. The effect of the canyon geometry is …

Modeling The Influence Of Soil Structure Interaction On The Seismic Response Of A 5 Mw Wind Turbine, Ian Prowell, Ahmed Elgamal, Jinchi Lu May 2010

Modeling The Influence Of Soil Structure Interaction On The Seismic Response Of A 5 Mw Wind Turbine, Ian Prowell, Ahmed Elgamal, Jinchi Lu

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In order to capture more energy, wind turbines are rapidly growing in height and rotor size. This growth increases the likelihood that soil structure interaction effects may influence the structural dynamic response. Current 3 MW turbines tower over the landscape with an 80 meter hub height and a 90 meter rotor diameter. This paper models a full soil structure system for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory onshore 5 MW reference wind turbine with a hub height of 90 meter and a 126 meter rotor diameter. A detailed finite element model of the turbine is created, including a full three dimensional …

Principles And Practices Of Seismic Microzonation: Case Studies In India, T. G. Sitharam, P. Anbazhagan, K. S. Vipin

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper presents an overview of the principles and practices of seismic microzonation with some case studies in India. India has experienced major damages and loss of life due to earthquakes. Macrozonation map in Indian seismic code IS-1893 is frequently revised soon after a major earthquake in the country. New revision which was published in 2002 after Bhuj earthquake in 2001 contains four macro zones. These zones are based on geology and limited seismology input without considering geotechnical aspects such as site effects and liquefaction. In order to understand the earthquake vulnerability of major urban centers and prepare new zonation …

The Non-Regularity Of Earthquake Recurrence In California: Lessons From Long Paleoseismic Records From The San Andreas And San Jacinto Faults In Southern California, And The North Anatolian Fault In Turkey, Thomas Rockwell May 2010

The Non-Regularity Of Earthquake Recurrence In California: Lessons From Long Paleoseismic Records From The San Andreas And San Jacinto Faults In Southern California, And The North Anatolian Fault In Turkey, Thomas Rockwell

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

A long paleoseismic record at Hog Lake on the central San Jacinto fault in southern California documents evidence for 18 surface ruptures in the past 3.8-4 ka. This yields a long-term recurrence interval of about 210 years, consistent with its slip rate of ~15 mm/yr and field observations of 3-3.5 m of displacement per event. However, during the past 3800 years, the fault has switched from a quasiperiodic mode of earthquake production, during which the recurrence interval is similar to the long-term average, to clustered behavior with the inter-event periods as short as a few decades (five surface ruptures occurred …

Seismic Stability Assessment The Raising Of The Geita Tailings Storage Facility, Tanzania, Michelle Theron, Fritz Wagener, Phillip Steenkamp

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The Geita gold mine, owned by AngloGold Ashanti, is located in the north west of Tanzania on the African Rift Belt in a seismically active. It is also located in an environmentally sensitive area as it is directly upslope of Lake Victoria. The Tailings Storage Facility was constructed as a side valley dam with its maximum design embankment elevation 1216m (i.e. 35m above ground level) and store capacity approximately 60 million tons of tailings. The feasibility of increasing this wall ultimately to 1246m (i.e. 65m above ground level) thereby increasing its capacity by 88.5 million tons, is the topic of …

Investigating Failure Of A Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil Wall In Black Hawk, Colorado, Jonathan T. H. Wu, Kanop Ketchart

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Approximately 18 months after construction, an 11-m high rock faced Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil (GRS) wall was found to suffer from subsidence of about 100 mm on the crest, along with rocks being dislodged from the wall face from time to time. In the ensuing three months after these signs of problems were first detected, the subsidence on the crest of the wall increased to about 250 mm with significant lateral bulging on the wall face. The wall comprised two sides. The problems occurred primarily on one side of the wall; while the other side showed little distress. The entire wall eventually …

Foundations Of The Nation: The Hillbrow And Brixton Towers As Figurations Of National Identity In South Africa, Lizè Groenewald, Francis Legge

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In its accreditation of degrees, the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) requires the inclusion, in any curriculum, of 10% of total credits of what are termed complementary studies that encompass reflections upon environmental impact, legal matters, cultural heritage and design philosophies as they pertain to the engineering profession. By stipulating this inclusion ECSA acknowledges that engineering can no longer be regarded as a neutral, apolitical endeavour. This paper responds to the latter position and sets out to offer a broadening of the current scope of scholarly dialogue between a logical science and the human community which it serves. In …

Microbiological Improvement Of The Physical Properties Of Soil, Edward Kavazanjian Jr., Ismail Karatas Aug 2008

Microbiological Improvement Of The Physical Properties Of Soil, Edward Kavazanjian Jr., Ismail Karatas

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The application of microbiological processes for improvement of the physical properties of soils offers the promise of sustainable, cost effective, non-disruptive ground improvement for a variety of geotechnical problems. Potentially beneficial applications of microbiological processes include increasing the stiffness of soil to reduce settlement and lateral deformations, increasing shear strength to enhance foundation bearing capacity and slope stability and to facilitate excavation and tunneling, reducing the susceptibility of granular soil to earthquake-induced liquefaction, reducing swell (expansion) potential of fine grained soil, and reducing permeability for groundwater control. Microbiological processes that can potentially be employed for these applications include mineral precipitation, …

Recent Experience On Design, Construction And Performance Of Cfrd Dams, Camilo Marulanda Escobar, Alberto Marulanda Posada

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The inherent features of concrete face rockfill dams and the trend of building higher dams have been recently questioned by three recent incidents where major dams have experienced significant cracking in the central portion of the dam after the first filling. The incidents include the dams of Mohale in South Africa, and Barra Grande and Campos Novos in Brazil, the last one being the highest dam of its type built in the world. The design and development of CFRD dams, have been based primarily on precedent and empiricism, however, these recent incidents have shown that the extrapolation of precedent with …
