Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell Nov 1997

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell

Jeffrey Keisler

The quality and value of an area depend primarily on what is found within
its designated boundaries. To determine the value of such areas in terms of boundaries,
we have developed a methodology for integrating multi-attribute utility functions with
spatial analysis so that desirable, or appropriate, boundaries can be determined on the
basis of the goals and objectives for the park. The key to successful evaluation is the
development of measures for what decision makers value, rather than merely using
what is easily measured. In a detailed example for planning of national parks, the
fundamental objectives are conservation and societal …

Spalanie Odpadów Poszpitalnych I Farmaceutycznych W Piecu Obrotowym / Incineration Of Hospital And Pharmaceutical Wastes In A Rotary Kiln Incinerator, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents selected results of research on hospital and pharmaceutical waste incineration in a full-scale rotary kiln with variable loads of the kiln. As part of these studies measurements of air pollutant concentrations in flue gases and leaching tests of solid combustion products were carried out. Based on these studies, the maximum dose of hospital and pharmaceutical waste was proposed in the mixture with industrial wastes, which does not cause excessive air emissions. The average emission factors for the waste mixture loading were also determined.

Green And Ampt Infiltration With Redistribution, Fred L. Ogden Aug 1997

Green And Ampt Infiltration With Redistribution, Fred L. Ogden

Fred L. Ogden

Distributed, physically based watershed and irrigation advance models require robust infiltration estimation capabilities. The empirical Green and Ampt (GA) equation of infiltration is a popular method for estimating infiltration. The GA parameters have physical basis and considerable prior research has focused on relating these parameters to soil textural classification. However, the original GA method is limited in that it is applicable only for a single ponding period. An explicit Green and Ampt redistribution (GAR) technique is developed herein to estimate interstorm redistribution of soil water and allow multiple ponding simulations using the GA methodology. Soil water redistribution during interponding periods …

The paper describes the problem of the presence of sulfur in the blast furnace process and identifies emission sources of sulfur compounds in this process. On the basis of the measurements and calculations, the types and quantities of these compounds emitted to the air were determined. It was found that pig iron smelting in a blast furnace causes emissions of COS, SO2 and H2S. These emissions occur by losses of blast furnace gas (COS and SO2), transport of blast furnace slag inside the furnace hall (SO2) and treatment of the slag by granulation (H2S). However, the most important are only …

Strength Of Bentonite Water-Well Annulus Seals In Confined Aquifers, Fred Ogden Feb 1993

Strength Of Bentonite Water-Well Annulus Seals In Confined Aquifers, Fred Ogden

Fred L. Ogden

The advantages of bentonite clay for sealing applications are well known. Bentonites have extremely low permeability, do not affect formation water chemistry, and have the ability to swell and deform in response to subsurface changes. The major limitation on the applicability of bentonite for water well annulus sealing is strength. Strength tests conducted in a physical model of a water well identified the expected magnitude of shear strength for several commercially available bentonite well-sealing products. The dependence of bentonite strength in the annulus of a water well on both setting time and borehole geometry is discussed. Force balance calculations for …

Micro And Macromorphology Of Recycled Fiber And Wood, Douglas D. Stokke Jan 1992

Micro And Macromorphology Of Recycled Fiber And Wood, Douglas D. Stokke

Douglas D. Stokke

Wood is a major industrial raw material, with U.S. consumption approaching that of aluminum, plastics, cement, and steel combined. Partially as a result of the magnitude of wood and wood products in use, these products constitute a substantial portion of the solid waste stream. In order to reduce the amount of wood and wood fiber disposed in landfills, efforts to recycle these materials into useful products such as structural composites are needed. The success of such conversion depends in part on knowledge of the morphological characteristics of various sources of secondary wood and wood fibers, and the influence of wood …

Setting Time Effects On Bentonite Water-Well Annulus Seals, Fred L. Ogden Jun 1991

Setting Time Effects On Bentonite Water-Well Annulus Seals, Fred L. Ogden

Fred L. Ogden

Shear strength tests are conducted in a model of a water well on four, commercially available, granular bentonite well sealing products. The time dependency of annulus seal shear strength and resistance to piping is examined. Dry bentonite samples are placed through water in the annular space between the casing and borehole and allowed to set for a specified time. Pressure is applied at a constant rate to one end of the clay seal until shear or piping failure occurs. Pressure and seal displacement data are recorded on a digital data acquisition system. Annulus seal strength and resistance to piping increase …

Optimering Van Koagulasie En Flokkulasie In Die Herwinning Van Koelwater Uit Oliesintese-Afvalwater, Johannes Van Leeuwen, P. Wille Jan 1991

Optimering Van Koagulasie En Flokkulasie In Die Herwinning Van Koelwater Uit Oliesintese-Afvalwater, Johannes Van Leeuwen, P. Wille

Johannes van Leeuwen

The activated sludge process, which is used in the purification of an oil synthesis effiuent, produces an effiuent which is high in turbidity. The water also contains a lot of dispersed bacterial growth which is not removed during sedimentation. Flocculation is essential to remove these materials. The average diameter of the colloids was found to be 0,92/'m. The zeta potential of the colloids was determined in an attempt to correlate it to the amount of flocculant required. The value was relatively constant at -13,88 mV, which indicates that a cationic·coagulant was required. The required dosage to achieve clarification by means …

Ozonation For Non-Filamentous Bulking Control In An Activated Sludge Plant Fuel Synthesis Waste Transfer, Johannes Van Leeuwen Apr 1989

Ozonation For Non-Filamentous Bulking Control In An Activated Sludge Plant Fuel Synthesis Waste Transfer, Johannes Van Leeuwen

Johannes van Leeuwen

A zero discharge mode of operation at the South African fuel synthesis plants necessitates the infinite recycle of treated industrial waste water. The treatment process incorporates activated sludge units in which non-filamentous bulking and carry-over of solids often occurs. The use of ozone for the control of this non-filamentous binding was investigated on a 33 l/d small pilot-scale plant. An ozone dosage of 1 g per kg mixed liquor suspended solids per day could reduce the diluted sludge volume index from an average of 125 to about 70 ml/g mainly by preventing zoogleal growths, the main contributor to the non-filamentous …

Bulking Control With Ozonation In A Nutrient Removal Activated Sludge System, Johannes Van Leeuwen Jul 1988

Bulking Control With Ozonation In A Nutrient Removal Activated Sludge System, Johannes Van Leeuwen

Johannes van Leeuwen

The control of sludge bulking by ozonation was studied on four parallel pilot-scale (100 l/d) biological nutrient removal systems. Bulking was caused by filamentous organisms which typically occur in nutrient removal systems, i.e. Type 0092, Tpye 0041 and Microthrix parvicella. Continuous dosing of ozone, at 1; 2 and 4g O3/kg mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS).d resulted in a diluted sludge volume index of about 50 ml/g less than the unozonated control. Ozonation was more effective in the sludge cycle than directly into the aeration basin. Nitrification-denitrification was not affected, not even at dosages of 30 g O3/kg MLSS.d. Biological phosphate …
