Digital Control Board For Phased Array Antenna Beam Steering In Adaptive Communication Applications, Mayur Bansal Nov 2013

Digital Control Board For Phased Array Antenna Beam Steering In Adaptive Communication Applications, Mayur Bansal

Master's Theses

The application of adaptive communication techniques for mobile communications has attracted considerable interest in the last decade. One example of these techniques is spatial filtering through planar antenna array beam forming.

This thesis describes the development of a digital system that adaptively controls a phased array antenna. The radiating structure of the phased antenna array is tetrahedral-shaped and contains four antenna elements on each of its three faces. The overall system comprises of a digital control board with an external computer interface, an RF control board, and the phased antenna array. The RF controls the main lobe direction on the …

Transmit Signal Design For Mimo Radar And Massive Mimo Channel Estimation, Andrew Jason Duly Oct 2013

Transmit Signal Design For Mimo Radar And Massive Mimo Channel Estimation, Andrew Jason Duly

Open Access Dissertations

The widespread availability of antenna arrays and the capability to independently control signal emissions from each antenna make transmit signal design increasingly important for radar and wireless communication systems. In the rst part of this work, we develop the framework for a MIMO radar transmit scheme which trades o waveform diversity for beampattern directivity. Time-division beamforming consists of a linear precoder that provides direct control of the transmit beampattern and is able to form multiple transmit beams in a single pulse. The MIMO receive ambiguity function, which incorporates the receiver structure, reveals a space and delay-Doppler separability that emphasizes the …

Conductive Textiles And Their Use In Combat Wound Detection, Sensing, And Localization Applications, Stephen A. Holland May 2013

Conductive Textiles And Their Use In Combat Wound Detection, Sensing, And Localization Applications, Stephen A. Holland

Masters Theses

Conductive textiles, originally used for electromagnetic shielding purposes, have recently been utilized in body area network applications as fabric antennas and distributed sensors used to document and analyze kinematic movement, health vital signs, or haptic interactions. This thesis investigates the potential for using conductive textiles as a distributed sensor and integrated communication system component for use in combat wound detection, sensing, and localization applications. The goal of these proof-of-concept experiments is to provide a basis for robust system development which can expedite and direct the medical response team in the field. The combat wound detection system would have the capability …

Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (Mems) Integrated Frequency Reconfigurable Antenna, Abdul Zohur May 2013

Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (Mems) Integrated Frequency Reconfigurable Antenna, Abdul Zohur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis investigates the concept of reconfigurability of an antenna’s properties, such as frequency, radiation pattern, and polarization, for a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA), by the use of radio frequency micro-electro-mechanical system (RF MEMS) switches. This research work has been conducted at the Micro/Nano Electro Mechanical Systems (µN _eMS) Laboratory at Utah State University. In this thesis, two electrically small frequency reconfigurable antenna designs have been presented with two and three modes of operation with central frequencies of 718 and 4960 MHz and of 857,809 and 4960 MHz, respectively. The maximum frequency tunable ratio achieved in these designs …
