Using renewable energy system in powering cellular base stations (BSs) has been widely accepted as a promising avenue to reduce and optimize energy consumption and corresponding carbon footprints and operational expenditures for 4G and beyond cellular communications. However, how to design a reliable and economical renewable energy powering (REPing), while guaranteeing communication reliability, renewable energy utilization, and system durability, is still a great challenge. Motivated by this challenge, we firstly model the dynamic energy flow behavior of solar energy-powered BS by using stochastic queue model, jointly considering instability of solar energy generation, non-linear effects of energy storage, and time varies …
Development Of Hardware In The Loop Real-Time Control Techniques For Hybrid Power Systems Involving Distributed Demands And Sustainable Energy Sources, Ali Mazloomzadeh
Development Of Hardware In The Loop Real-Time Control Techniques For Hybrid Power Systems Involving Distributed Demands And Sustainable Energy Sources, Ali Mazloomzadeh
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The future power grid will effectively utilize renewable energy resources and distributed generation to respond to energy demand while incorporating information technology and communication infrastructure for their optimum operation. This dissertation contributes to the development of real-time techniques, for wide-area monitoring and secure real-time control and operation of hybrid power systems.
To handle the increased level of real-time data exchange, this dissertation develops a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that is equipped with a state estimation scheme from the real-time data. This system is verified on a specially developed laboratory-based test bed facility, as a hardware and software …

An Isolated Multiport Dc–Dc Converter For Simultaneous Power Management Of Multiple Different Renewable Energy Sources, Jianwu Zeng, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu, Yanping Jiao
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a new isolated multiport dc–dc converter for simultaneous power management of multiple renewable energy sources, which can be of different types and capacities. The proposed dc–dc converter only uses one controllable switch in each port to which a source is connected. Therefore, it has the advantages of simple topology and minimum number of power switches. A general topology of the proposed converter is first introduced. Its principle and operation are then analyzed. The proposed converter is applied for simultaneous maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control of a wind/solar hybrid generation system consisting of one wind turbine generator …

The constant reliance on fossil fuel energy resources is unsustainable, due to both depleting world reserves and increasing green house gas emissions associated with their use and thus there are dynamic research at the global level envisioned at developing alternative renewable and potentially carbon neutral solid, liquid and gaseous biofuels as alternative energy resources. The contemporary knowledge and technology predictions have proved that among the third generation biofuels especially those derived from microalgae are considered the best reasonable alternative energy resource compared to undeniable drawbacks of first and second generation biofuels. Moreover, its efficiency to sequester carbon from the atmosphere …
Hybrid Power System Intelligent Operation And Protection Involving Distributed Architectures And Pulsed Loads, Ahmed A. Mohamed
Hybrid Power System Intelligent Operation And Protection Involving Distributed Architectures And Pulsed Loads, Ahmed A. Mohamed
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Efficient and reliable techniques for power delivery and utilization are needed to account for the increased penetration of renewable energy sources in electric power systems. Such methods are also required for current and future demands of plug-in electric vehicles and high-power electronic loads. Distributed control and optimal power network architectures will lead to viable solutions to the energy management issue with high level of reliability and security. This dissertation is aimed at developing and verifying new techniques for distributed control by deploying DC microgrids, involving distributed renewable generation and energy storage, through the operating AC power system.
To achieve the …
Power Quality Improvement Of Distributed Generation Integrated Network With Unified Power Quality Conditioner., Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem
Power Quality Improvement Of Distributed Generation Integrated Network With Unified Power Quality Conditioner., Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem
Doctoral
With the increased penetration of small scale renewable energy sources in the electrical distribution network, maintenance or improvement of power quality has become more critical than ever where the level of voltage and current harmonics or disturbances can vary widely. For this reason, Custom Power Devices (CPDs) such as the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) can be the most appropriate solution for enhancing the dynamic performance of the distribution network, where accurate prior knowledge may not be available. Therefore, the main objective of the present research is to investigate the (i) placement (ii) integration (iii) capacity enhancement and (iv) real …

A Low-Carbon Energy Blueprint for the American West (Martz Summer Conference, June 6-8)
The future of the planet may depend upon our ability to increase energy supplies even as we reduce carbon emissions. This conference will address how a low-carbon energy program might evolve with a particular focus on the American West. It will focus on the future of energy in the West--on a “managed transition” to a different energy mix, on the need to nest this effort in a framework that acknowledges interconnections, and on identifying the most salient opportunities to consider the legal, political, financial, and technical challenges.
Energy Sources And The Production Of Electricity In The United States, David Manukjan
Energy Sources And The Production Of Electricity In The United States, David Manukjan
Honors College Theses
The current sources of energy that the United States uses to produce electricity are costly, extremely damaging to the environment, and cause us to rely on other countries for our energy needs. The Obama Administration has begun working on replacing coal and oil with cleaner sources of energy. Over the last decade, alternative energy sources have been slowly gaining popularity as the American public learns more about climate change. However, the U.S. government will not use renewable energy as a complete substitute for fossil fuels in the immediate future because of their higher market price. The world is struggling to …
