Influence Of The Local Field And Dipole-Dipole Interactions On The Spectral Characteristics Of Simple Metals And Their Nanoparticles, I. I. Shaganov, Kevin Berwick, T. S. Perova

Articles

The effect of dipole-dipole interactions of free electrons on the spectral characteristics of simple metals and their nanoparticles is analyzed using Drude theory and the model of the Lorentz local field. It is established that accounting for the dispersion of a local field under conditions of one-dimensional (1D) confinement based on the optical constants of the bulk metal allows the determination of its spectral micro-characteristics in the frequency region of the longitudinal collective motions of the free electrons. This corresponds to the spectra of the dielectric losses of bulk plasma oscillations. A similar procedure for three-dimensional (3D) confinement produces the …

Three-Phase Two-Leg T-Type Converter Based Active Power Filter, Samet Biricik, Hasan Komurcugil, Mohamed Trabelsi

Conference papers

In this work, a three-phase two-leg T-type active power filter topology is investigated when a three-level hysteresis band current modulation technique is applied. The three-phase two-leg T-type configuration which utilizes eight switching devices together split DC link capacitor banks is able to improve the reliability of the system as well as effectively reduces the power losses. The compensation of the current harmonics at each phase are achieved successfully with the control of phase-a and phase-b. Using this technique, the phase-c is directly connected to the midpoint of the split capacitors, which eliminates the necessity of additional control on the phase-c. …

Demand Response And Consumer Inconvenience, Chittesh Veni Chandran, Malabika Basu, Keith Sunderland

Conference papers

Balancing the energy demand and generation using the latest load management technologies is considered as an immediate requirement for peak demand management and to improve the operation of electrical distribution networks. However, load management technologies depriving consumers of utilizing their personal resources could be perceived as a consumer right violation by many consumers, and thus, the success of the program is significantly dependent on consumer satisfaction. This paper probes consumer engagement plans through an algorithm to minimize the consumer inconvenience caused by the load management/demand response (DR) program. Four different consumer engagement plans are proposed for consumers with different tolerance …

Impact On Distribution System Protection With The Integration Of Eg On The Distribution Network, Jane Courtney, Aaron Mcdonnell

Conference papers

A significant increase in EG connections on the distribution network over the past decade in Ireland has presented challenges to the Distribution System Operator (DSO). The connection of EG can cause co-ordination of Distance protection to be altered and has resulted in variations in short circuit levels. Multidirectional power flow has been introduced into a Distribution system that was not designed for the direction change in current flow. The impact of connecting EG to a typical 38 kV Distribution Network was demonstrated as part of this study. Increasing fault levels and protection co-ordination selectivity problems were identified when the network …

Photovoltaic Supplied T-Type Three- Phase Inverter With Harmonic Current Compensation Capability, Zahera Batool, Samet Biricik, Hasan Komurcugil, Tuan Ngo, Tuyen V. Vu

Conference papers

In this paper, a T-Type grid-connected inverter with harmonic current compensation capability is proposed and studied for the on-grid photovoltaic (PV) systems. This idea is based on the modification of the existing photovoltaic inverter control algorithm with the adaptation of active power filter control algorithm. The grid-connected PV inverter has similar topology and control methods as that of the active power filter systems. However, such multifunctional inverters have not yet matured for commercial use and call for more research. In this work, a conventional phase locked-loop algorithm is used to determine the angular position of the synchronous reference of the …

Investigation Into Photovoltaic Distributed Generation Penetration In The Low Voltage Distribution Network, Shivananda Pukhrem

Doctoral

Significant integration of photovoltaic distributed generation (PVDG) in the low voltage distribution network (LVDN) could potentially pose threats and challenges to the core activity of distribution system operators (DSO), which is to transport electrical energy in a reliable and cost-effective way. The main aim of this research is to investigate the active planning and operation of LVDNs with increased PVDG integration through steady state power system analysis. To address the impacts of voltage profile fluctuation due to power flow modification, this research proposes a probabilistic risk assessment of power quality (PQ) variations and events that may arise due to significant …

Series Compensation To Increase Power Flow: A Case Study On The Irish Transmission System, Aidan Heffernan, Jane Courtney Jan 2019

Series Compensation To Increase Power Flow: A Case Study On The Irish Transmission System, Aidan Heffernan, Jane Courtney

Conference papers

Ireland presents an interesting case study for transmission network strengthening. The majority of load in the country is located at the nation's capital, Dublin, in the East, while most of the new conventional generation and renewable generation are found in the South-West. Power is transferred between the two via a 400 kV network. This leads to large cross- country power flows. This power distribution disparity is due to increase. A large thermal generating station which is connected to the 400 kV system in the West, will close by 2025. This generation will be replaced partially with wind generation in the …

Conference papers

With the increase of multimorbidity due to population ageing, managing multiple chronic health conditions is a rising challenge. Machine-learning can contribute to a better understanding of persons with multimorbidity (PwMs) and how to design an effective framework of care and support for them. We present a risk model of older PwMs that was derived from the TILDA dataset, a longitudinal study of the ageing Irish population. This model is based on a 26-nodes Bayesian network that represents patients possibly having one or more chronic conditions among diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and arthritis, through a joint probability distribution of demographic, …

Conference papers

Distribution network (DN) load flexibility has simultaneously created challenges and opportunities. The major challenge is to meet the demand-supply balance while maintaining a positive profit-loss ratio. Further, Government enforced climate change policies attract low carbon technology (LCT) distributed energy resources (DER), which further complicate matters. Along with DN, the domestic appliance industry has undergone drastic modernization leading to appliances with advanced control and power efficient technologies as well as automation capabilities. This paper proposes a demand response (DR) program that facilitates these advancements while micromanaging the domestic load consumption pattern so as to manage peak demand in the network. This …

Use Of Matrix-Pencil Method For Efficient Islanding Detection In Static Dg And A Parallel Comparison With Dwt Method, Sanjay Agrawal, Sandipan Patra, Soumya R. Mohanty, Vineeta Agarwal, Malabika Basu

Articles

Islanding or nonislanding events in grid-connected distributed generation bring along a typical distinguishable transient signature in its frequency profile. This demarcation leads to the development of a new islanding protection approach, which is based on the estimation of frequency waveform parameter (transient's frequency) by Matrix pencil (MP) method. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed MP method, four critical scenarios are considered in this paper for covering all possible disturbance events. These events are also compared along with a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) based islanding detection method in simulations as well as in RT-LAB-based real-time environment. It is noteworthy to …

Parallel connection of converters is a convenient choice when system capacity is to be increased. Parallel-connected voltage source converters, especially neutral point clamped converters, are one of the best choices for its range. However, with the parallel connectivity, the converter possesses a circulating current in its legs, which consequently threatens the safe operation of the system. To alleviate this circulating current problem, in this paper, a double deadbeat (DD) plus repetitive control (RC) scheme is proposed. The RC scheme is employed to mitigate the circulating currents and the DD loop control scheme is employed to achieve a high operating bandwidth …

Detection Of Grid Voltage Anomalies Via Broadband Subspace Decomposition, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif

Conference papers

Due to the increase of sensitive loads on the mains power grid, measurement and monitoring of the power quality (PQ) have become an important factor for both consumers and operators. As is well-known, PQ problems occur in a very short time period with specific characteristics. In transmission or distribution systems, power quality data are collected from monitoring devices such as digital fault recorders, power quality and dynamic system monitors, etc. The recorded data has to be analysed in order to understand system anomalies. These anomalies may be due to sources of broadband noise. In this study, we employ broadband subspace …

Impact Of Loss Of Generation On Bus Voltage Frequency And Rocof, Damien Doheny, Michael Conlon Jan 2019

Impact Of Loss Of Generation On Bus Voltage Frequency And Rocof, Damien Doheny, Michael Conlon

Conference papers

This study investigates how the loss of a generator impacts bus voltage RoCoF post-disturbance. The results show that the fastest bus voltage RoCoFs will occur close to generators impacted the most by the disturbance but this may not be the closest generator to the disturbance. The study also demonstrates a simple method that can be used to identify the generator that will be impacted most after a disturbance and hence the network location that will experience the fastest RoCoF.

Comparing Data Augmentation Strategies For Deep Image Classification, Sarah O'Gara, Kevin Mcguinness Jan 2019

Comparing Data Augmentation Strategies For Deep Image Classification, Sarah O'Gara, Kevin Mcguinness

Session 2: Deep Learning for Computer Vision

Currently deep learning requires large volumes of training data to fit accurate models. In practice, however, there is often insufficient training data available and augmentation is used to expand the dataset. Historically, only simple forms of augmentation, such as cropping and horizontal flips, were used. More complex augmentation methods have recently been developed, but it is still unclear which techniques are most effective, and at what stage of the learning process they should be introduced. This paper investigates data augmentation strategies for image classification, including the effectiveness of different forms of augmentation, dependency on the number of training examples, and …

As a civilization, we are drowning in a raging torrent of data, of our own making, that is being harvested by our collective technologies and systems (e.g. Fitbit, phones). However, data itself is of no utility unless it is converted into beneficial knowledge. Design patterns have been shown to be a pragmatic solution to control and manage information flows and provide order and mean-ing to data within a given context. Assisting users within their daily activities has become a key aspect for modern Artificial Intelligence Systems. Neverthe-less, although the GPS technologies work well for outside location, indoor posi-tioning is still …

Protection Of Sensitive Loads Using Sliding Mode Controlled Three-Phase Dvr With Adaptive Notch Filter, Samet Biricik, Hasan Komurcugil, Nguyen Duc Tuyen, Malabika Basu

Articles

This paper introduces a sliding mode control (SMC) strategy for three-phase dynamic voltage restorers (DVRs) with a 12-switch voltage source inverter. The compensating voltage references needed in the SMC strategy are generated by an adaptive notch filter (ANF), which exhibits excellent performance under grid voltage anomalies such as voltage sags, swells, and unbalanced and distorted grid voltage conditions. The consequence of using the ANF eliminates the use of phase-lock loop or frequency-lock loop and low-pass filter, which makes it distinguishable from the existing reference signal generation solutions. In addition, the use of the SMC strategy with its attractive properties makes …
