Theses and Dissertations

The overall objective of the Distributed Interactive Simulation Virtual Cassette Recorder (DIS VCR) is to add a flexible replay capability to any DIS environment and specifically to the Remote Debriefing Tool (RDT). The DIS VCR's abilities include selective filtering of incoming DIS Protocol Data Units (PDUs), variable-speed replays, ability to pause, fast-forward, rewind, efficient data storage and retrieval, and an interface that simplifies the execution of those functions. The thesis includes a DIS VCR-compatible design for concurrent replay of audio extracted from signal PDUs and an extension to the replay design that supports unmodifiable rendering or receiving applications. For variable-speed …

Roc Analysis Of Ir Segmentation Techniques, Georgia K. Harrup Dec 1994

Roc Analysis Of Ir Segmentation Techniques, Georgia K. Harrup

Theses and Dissertations

Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves are used to compare the effectiveness of IR image processing techniques. Two non-parametric error estimation techniques (k-Nearest Neighbor and Parzen Window) are used to create estimates of the probability density functions for the data. These pdfs are used in the creation of the ROC curves for both resubstitution and leave-one-out estimates. These estimates generate the upper and lower bounds, respectively, on the ROC curves. The ROC curve analysis is performed on the outputs of various image processing techniques and the resulting ROC curves are used to compare the techniques. Of the image processing techniques used …

Experimental Definition For Implantation Of The Afit Cortical Multielectrode Array, Adam G. Spenik Dec 1994

Experimental Definition For Implantation Of The Afit Cortical Multielectrode Array, Adam G. Spenik

Theses and Dissertations

A two-dimensional multiplexed array of 256 electrodes (16 x 16) has been fabricated using conventional CMOS fabrication techniques. The size and spacing of the electrodes (160 x 160 µm squares with center-to-center spacing of 250 µm) approximate that of the cortical columns. The device is mounted on a small biocompatible package and a protocol to implant this package on the visual cortex of a ferret and a Rhesus monkey was developed and approved. An instrumentation setup to record the data from the device is described as well as the methods used to demultiplex the data. Testing of the device in …

Advanced Formation Flight Control, Michael J. Veth Dec 1994

Advanced Formation Flight Control, Michael J. Veth

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the formation flight control problem is continued from four previous theses. Automatic formation flight involves controlling multiple aircraft equipped with standard Mach-hold, altitude hold, and heading-hold autopilots to maintain a desired distance from a lead aircraft or "rabbit". Changes in the rabbit's states are treated as disturbances to the system and rejected. Previous research is advanced in the following areas: Higher-order aircraft-autopilot models are included into the design and a new feedback control law is employed, resulting in more accurate simulations. An energy tracking scheme is developed and is shown to reduce wing aircraft energy excursions. Finally, …

Flight Control Design Using Mixed H2/Μ Optimization, Douglas D. Decker Dec 1994

Flight Control Design Using Mixed H2/Μ Optimization, Douglas D. Decker

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the use of the mixed H2-Microns optimal control synthesis method in the design of a flight control system for the lateral-directional axes of the F-16 Variable Stability In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA). The method is designed to minimize the H2 norm (two-norm) for a given value of microns. This should provide adequate noise and disturbance rejection while maintaining robustness against several types of uncertainties in the system. This thesis finds that, for this problem, the two-norm is not an accurate representation of the outputs of interest. When the two-norm is broken up into its constituent parts an …

A Gain Scheduling Optimization Method Using Genetic Algorithms, Robert C. Martin Iv Dec 1994

A Gain Scheduling Optimization Method Using Genetic Algorithms, Robert C. Martin Iv

Theses and Dissertations

Gain scheduling. the traditional method of providing adaptive control to a nonlinear system, has long been an ad hoc design process. Until recently; little theoretical guidance directed this practitioners' art. For this reason a systematic study of this design process and its potential for optimization has never been accomplished. Additionally, the nonlinearities and the large search space involved in gain scheduling also precluded such an optimization study. Traditionally, the gain scheduling process has been some variation of a linear interpolation between discrete design points. By using powerful non-traditional optimization tools such as genetic algorithms there are ways of improving this …

A Comparison Of The Neal-Smith And ΩSpΤΘ2, ΣSp, ΤΘ Flying Qualities Criteria, Brian A. Kish Dec 1994

A Comparison Of The Neal-Smith And ΩSpΤΘ2, ΣSp, ΤΘ Flying Qualities Criteria, Brian A. Kish

Theses and Dissertations

Aircraft pitch response is a vital element of piloted vehicle flying qualities. There has been controversy over both the form and the substance of the requirements for short-term pitch response. Currently, MIL-STD- 1797A offers six different methods for evaluating short-term pitch response. These six methods often give conflicting results. Two methods are analyzed in this thesis - the Neal-Smith criteria and the ωspΤθ2, ςsp, τθ criteria. Domains from both criteria are mapped into each other identifying regions of conflict and regions of agreement. Parametric studies are performed and evaluated for trends. Further, a …

Model Of A Single Impurity In A Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Describing Electric Field Screening, Anthony N. Dills Dec 1994

Model Of A Single Impurity In A Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Describing Electric Field Screening, Anthony N. Dills

Theses and Dissertations

A mathematical model of the influence on electric field screening arising from a single impurity in a wide bandgap semiconductor has been numerically investigated and compared with analytically derived solutions. The parameter set chosen to perform the comparison of analytical solution and numerical solution is based upon a bismuth silicate crystal. Both the analytical calculations and the numerical calculations are an attempt to mathematically model the internal electric field within a semiconductor. Two types of impurities were looked at: a single donor level and a single trap impurity level. In general, after an abrupt application of a voltage across the …

Total Ionizing Dose Effects In Mosfet Devices At 77 K, Kevin J. Daul Dec 1994

Total Ionizing Dose Effects In Mosfet Devices At 77 K, Kevin J. Daul

Theses and Dissertations

Total ionizing dose effects on thermal oxide and reoxidized nitrided oxide (RNO) MOSFET devices at 77 K were studied. The MOSFETs were immersed in liquid nitrogen and irradiated, using a 60Co source, up to 1 Mrad(Si) at a dose rate of 107 rads(Si)-sec. Drain current-gate voltage characteristics were obtained and used to determine threshold voltage and transconductance. At 77 K the subthreshold slopes indicated no observed buildup of interface states in any of the transistors. Furthermore, all transistors experienced very little change in the transconductance. Typical negative shifts in threshold voltage as dose increased were observed in all of …

Multipoint Multirate Signal Processing, Roger L. Claypoole Jr. Dec 1994

Multipoint Multirate Signal Processing, Roger L. Claypoole Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a fundamentally new, systematic study of multipoint multirate signal processing systems. The multipoint multirate operators are analyzed via equivalent circuits comprised entirely of conventional multirate operators. Interconnections of the operators are demonstrated, and the multipoint noble identities are derived. The multipoint polyphase representation is presented, and the M channel multipoint multirate system with vector length N is presented as an MN channel multipoint polyphase system. The conditions sufficient for perfect reconstruction in the multipoint multirate system are derived. These conditions constrain the multipoint filter banks to be composed of comb filters generated from paraunitary sets of conventional …

Characterization And Redesign Of The Afit Multielectrode Array, Richard G. Darenberg Jr. Dec 1994

Characterization And Redesign Of The Afit Multielectrode Array, Richard G. Darenberg Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Since 1978, faculty and graduate students from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) have been working on an implantable circuit array that can record visual signals from the brain or stimulate the brain. The array is multiplexed so that only one I-O line is required to access all 256 pads. This research was twofold: first to analyze the existing circuit and identify sources …

Survey And Implementation Of Commercial Manual Controllers For A Generic Telerobotics Architecture, Thomas E. Deeter Dec 1994

Survey And Implementation Of Commercial Manual Controllers For A Generic Telerobotics Architecture, Thomas E. Deeter

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine an input device for the Air Force's generic telerobotics architecture for large aircraft maintenance and repair. One area of concern is the human to machine interface, more specifically, which manual controller should be used for the specified tasks in this architecture. We mailed a survey to 68 companies in order to compile a list of possible input devices that the telerobotics architecture could use. 32 companies responded which gave me enough data to generate a list that described the physical traits of the input devices. We then divided the required tasks into …

A 3-D Finite Difference Time Domain Investigation Of Microwave Propagation Through Inhomogeneous Biological Materials, David B. Dunn Jr. Dec 1994

A 3-D Finite Difference Time Domain Investigation Of Microwave Propagation Through Inhomogeneous Biological Materials, David B. Dunn Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This paper extends past analysis of an optimal source distribution around a homogeneous sphere of muscle tissue by using a 3-D finite difference time domain (FDTD) scenario in which an anatomically correct human head model is irradiated. It first duplicates the analytical solution within an FDTD space using an FDTD computer code developed at Penn State University. This duplication uses a 9.45 cm radius sphere represented in an FDTD space of 2.35 mm cubic cells. FDTD simulations are then performed on four, three, and two layer laminated spheres, designed to provide simple models of a head. Finally, four simulations were …

Implementation And Demonstration Of A Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Failure Detection System For The F-16, Peter K. Eide

Theses and Dissertations

A Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) algorithm is implemented with the fully nonlinear six-degree-of-motion, Simulation Rapid-Prototyping Facility (SRF) VISTA F-16 software simulation tool. The algorithm is demonstrated to be capable of identifying flight critical aircraft actuator and sensor failures at a low dynamic pressure (20,000 ft, .4 Mach). Research included single and dual complete failures. Tuning methods for accommodating model mismatch, including addition of discrete dynamics pseudonoise and continuous measurement pseudonoise, are discussed and demonstrated. Scalar residuals within each filter are also examined and characterized for possible use as an additional failure declaration voter. Robustness to sensor failures provided by …

Classification Of Ultra High Range Resolution Radar Using Decision Boundary Analysis, Christopher L. Eisenbies Dec 1994

Classification Of Ultra High Range Resolution Radar Using Decision Boundary Analysis, Christopher L. Eisenbies

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the discrimination of targets with Ultra High Range Resolution (UHRR) radar data. Using these measured signals from frontal aspect angles of four aircraft classes, the baseline performance of the Adaptive Gaussian Classifier (AGC) is tested with respect to aligning exemplars to templates. Alignment plays a crucial role in the AGC's classification performance which can degrade by 11% for a target class. The AGC is compared to non-parametric classifiers, but no statistically significant degradation of performance is found. Data separability is analyzed by hounding the Bayes error. The data is well separated in a statistical sense. A feature …

The Design And Analysis Of Integrated Navigation Systems Using Real Ins And Gps Data, Curtis D. Evans Dec 1994

The Design And Analysis Of Integrated Navigation Systems Using Real Ins And Gps Data, Curtis D. Evans

Theses and Dissertations

An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to combine the information obtained from a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and an Inertial Navigation System (INS) to provide a navigation solution. This research compares the results of an actual tightly-coupled GPS-INS integrated system with those obtained in computer simulation. Differences between the simulation and actual hardware results, such as navigation solutions and tuning values, are shown in the research. An analysis of various GPS models was studied to determine the best representation for a system truth model. Measurement updates and their effects upon position accuracies was considered and preliminary research was …

Analysis And Simulation Of Narrowband Gps Jamming Using Digital Excision Temporal Filtering, Gerald L. Falen Dec 1994

Analysis And Simulation Of Narrowband Gps Jamming Using Digital Excision Temporal Filtering, Gerald L. Falen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the performance of the Digital Excision Temporal Filter (DETF) to reject narrowband jammers used against the Global Positioning System (GPS). The DETF takes the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the GPS signal and excises any FFT bins that are above a preselected threshold level. Then the excised signal is Inverse Fourier Transformed and fed to the GPS receiver. Several jammer types are simulated including Continuous Wave (CW), Pulse CW, Swept CW, Narrowband Spot Noise, and Wideband Barrage Noise jammers. Cases are also simulated using all but the Wideband Barrage Noise jammer at …

Isolated Digit Recognition Without Time Alignment, Jeffrey M. Gay Dec 1994

Isolated Digit Recognition Without Time Alignment, Jeffrey M. Gay

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines methods for isolated digit recognition without using time alignment. Resource requirements for isolated word recognizers that use time alignment can become prohibitively large as the vocabulary to be classified grows. Thus, methods capable of achieving recognition rates comparable to those obtained with current methods using these techniques are needed. The goals of this research are to find feature sets for speech recognition that perform well without using time alignment, and to identify classifiers that provide good performance with these features. Using the digits from the TI46 database, baseline speaker-independent recognition rates of 95.2% for the complete speaker …

Head Related Transfer Function Approximation Using Neural Networks, John K. Millhouse Dec 1994

Head Related Transfer Function Approximation Using Neural Networks, John K. Millhouse

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis determines whether an artificial neural network (ANN) can approximate the Armstrong Aerospace Medical Research Laboratories (AAMRL) head related transfer functions (HRTF) data obtained from research at AAMRL during the fall of 1988. The first test determines whether HRTF lends any support in sound localization when compared to no HRTF (Interaural Time Delay only). There is a statistically significant interaction between the location of the sound and whether the HRTF or no HRTF is used. When this interaction is removed using the alternate F.Value, the statistics give the result of equal means for the filters and azimuth. This means …

Processing Of Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar Signals For Detection Of Obscured Ground Targets, Richard J. Sumner Dec 1994

Processing Of Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar Signals For Detection Of Obscured Ground Targets, Richard J. Sumner

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates advanced processing techniques for the detection of radar targets in the presence of clutter. It is assumed that the radar data available consist of multi-aspect angle, fully polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Various techniques are introduced and tested on available SAR data. These techniques attempt to exploit the multi-aspect angles in order to extract target characteristics not available in any single image. SAR images are manipulated in such a way to decrease the probability of false alarms in the target detection process. Target detection performance of the techniques is presented and compared. The techniques are shown …

Compensated Deconvolution From Wavefront Sensing, Lori A. Thorson Dec 1994

Compensated Deconvolution From Wavefront Sensing, Lori A. Thorson

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Air Force has a continuing mission to obtain imagery of earth-orbiting objects. One of the means for obtaining this imagery is through the use of ground-based observatories. A fundamental problem associated with imaging objects through the atmosphere is that atmospheric turbulence inflicts a large, random aberration on the telescope which effectively limits the realizable resolution to that of a much smaller telescope. Several approaches have been taken to overcome these effects including pure post processing, pure adaptive optics, and hybrid techniques involving both adaptive optics and image post processing. One key result from past approaches is that partially …

Perceptual Based Image Fusion With Applications To Hyperspectral Image Data, Terry A. Wilson Dec 1994

Perceptual Based Image Fusion With Applications To Hyperspectral Image Data, Terry A. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Development of new imaging sensors has created a need for image processing techniques that can fuse images from different sensors or multiple images produced by the same sensor. The methods presented here focus on combining image data from the Airborne Visual and Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) hyperspectral sensor into a single or smaller subset of images while maintaining the visual information necessary for human analysis. Three hierarchical multi-resolution image fusion techniques are implemented and tested using the AVIRIS image data and test images that contain various levels of correlated or uncorrelated noise. Two of the algorithms are published fusion methods …

Improving The Performance Of Spiral Antennas By Using Passive Scatterers, Joseph S. Zaren Dec 1994

Improving The Performance Of Spiral Antennas By Using Passive Scatterers, Joseph S. Zaren

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the viability of improving the performance of cavity-backed antennas. Traditionally antenna cavities are filled with electromagnetic absorber to mitigate interference effects that would otherwise cause the antenna radiation pattern to vary widely at different frequencies. The approach used in this research was to replace the absorber with dielectric slabs, some of which contained arrays of dipoles. These dipole arrays were modeled as frequency selective surfaces using two periodic moment method based - computer programs and one transmission line program. A systematic study was performed that identified the effect of changing the dipole …

This thesis contains an overview of: dielectric waveguides, linear and nonlinear directional coupler theory; various models useful in the design and analysis of optical waveguides; the fabrication of three different waveguide designs; the experimental apparatus and procedure used to optically characterize the waveguides; and the experimental results of the characterization. Waveguiding …

Frame Selection Performance Limits For Statistical Image Reconstruction Of Adaptive Optics Compensated Images, Stephen D. Ford Dec 1994

Frame Selection Performance Limits For Statistical Image Reconstruction Of Adaptive Optics Compensated Images, Stephen D. Ford

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Air Force uses adaptive optics systems to collect images of extended objects beyond the atmosphere. These systems use wavefront sensors and deformable mirrors to compensate for atmospheric turbulence induced aberrations. Adaptive optics greatly enhance image quality; however, wavefront aberrations are not completely eliminated. Therefore, post-detection processing techniques are employed to further improve the compensated images. Typically, many short exposure images are collected, recentered to compensate for tilt, and then averaged to overcome randomness in the images and improve signal-to-noise ratio. Experience shows that some short exposure images in a data set are better than others. Frame selection exploits …

Image Perception Wavelet Simulation And Enhancement For The Visually Impaired, Lemuel Ray Myers Jr. Dec 1994

Image Perception Wavelet Simulation And Enhancement For The Visually Impaired, Lemuel Ray Myers Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research delves into the area of image enhancement for the visually impaired. Binocular macular degeneration a visual impairment, affects many Americans; since this condition could not be corrected with conventional glasses the literature suggested using an enhancement system which used a pre-emphasis algorithm to enhance the input image for output to the observer. The work of Dr. Eli Peli, a pioneer in the field of image enhancement, is examine and reproduced. Since his work concentrated mainly on frequency analysis of images, the bulk of this research involves using discrete wavelet analysis to augment that work. A biorthogonal wavelet set …

Multispectral Detection Of Ground Targets In Highly Correlated Backgrounds, Jason E. Thomas Dec 1994

Multispectral Detection Of Ground Targets In Highly Correlated Backgrounds, Jason E. Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

Multispectral detection methods attempt to discriminate targets in a dominant clutter background using multiple images of the same real-world scene taken in different narrow spectral bands in the infrared. Detection is possible due to the empirically observed phenomenon that the radiance of man-made objects, such as a tank or truck, often lies off the main spectral correlation axis of that of natural backgrounds. Radiometric measurements of several vehicles and a tree canopy background taken over three days in June. 1994 were used to examine the factors affecting multispectral detection. Results clearly showed that the processes which provide for higher spectral …

Erp Analysis Using Matched Filtering And Wavelet Transform, Xueming Lin Nov 1994

Erp Analysis Using Matched Filtering And Wavelet Transform, Xueming Lin

Dissertations and Theses

Event related potentials (ERP's) carry very important information that relates to the performance of the brain functions of the human being. Further studies have identified that one component, in particular, P300, is affected by the memory process. Matched filter is used to improved the SNR of signal ERP's. We use the output of the matched filter to distinguish the difference of the waveforms between normal subjects and memory-impaired subjects. In our study, we found that the peak values of the matched filtering output were different between normal subjects and memoryimpaired subjects. Also, as an application, wavelet transform is …

Broadband Rf Current Detector, George Cabrera Nov 1994

Broadband Rf Current Detector, George Cabrera

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problems to be solved in this thesis were 1) development of a broadband RF preamplifier to be used with non-ferrous current probes so that the amplified signal exceeds the errors due to cable pickup, no detection is needed in this application, and 2) development of a self-contained device that amplifies and detects the output from a nonferrous current probe, providing a digital readout of the current. These instruments have been completed and are being tested for use by the National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The self-contained current meter operates at frequencies up to 600 MHz, and …

Performance Of Bandlimited Gaussian Noise As A Spreading Code In Awgn And Single Tone Interference Channels, Tze-Yu Chu, Kurt Louis Kosbar Nov 1994

Performance Of Bandlimited Gaussian Noise As A Spreading Code In Awgn And Single Tone Interference Channels, Tze-Yu Chu, Kurt Louis Kosbar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper examines the bit error rate (BER) of a direct sequence spread spectrum (SS) system that uses bandlimited white Gaussian noise (BLWGN) as a spreading code. The performance of this "bandlimited-SS" system is examined in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and single tone jamming environments. The BLWGN spreading code is inferior to conventional codes in AWGN channels, but is more robust when a narrow band interference signal is present.
