Bending Moment Calculation And Reinforcement Recommendations For Cast-In-Place Cover Slabs In Slab Culverts, Li Yukun, Wan Kecheng, Fu Fulin

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

To address the complexity and lack of practical methods for calculating bending moments of cast-in-place cover slabs in slab culverts, the slabs were simplified as one-way slabs with a pair of opposing edges simply supported and the other pair of edges free.Theoretical formulas for calculating the bending moments within the slabs under uniformly distributed loads were derived using elastic theory. The accuracy of the theoretical formulas was validated through case studies via finite element software.Various combinations of length, width, and fill heights exist in highway projects, making the use of theoretical formulas for bending moment calculations cumbersome. Therefore,a simplified method for calculating maximum bending moments in …

Investigating The Correlation And Synergy Of Artificial Intelligence Techniques, Construction Technologies, And Their Key Benefits, Fareed Salih, Islam H. El-Adaway

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Despite its reputation as one of the least digitized sectors, the construction industry increasingly adopts artificial intelligence (AI) and construction technologies. However, previous research has not adequately explored the benefits of AI techniques and construction technologies nor the correlations between them. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap. To this end, the authors used a multistep research methodology. First, a systematic literature review of studies published between 1985 and 2022 was conducted to identify AI techniques and construction technologies. Second, content and frequency analysis were performed to determine the benefits associated with AI and technology adoption. Finally, a survey …

Enhancing Management Of Transportation Projects: Integration Factors For Using Smart Contracts, Mariam Elazhary, Islam H. El-Adaway

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) delivers a wide range of infrastructure projects, backed by a fiscal year 2023 budget exceeding $100 billion. These projects face mounting pressures to meet performance, accountability, and delivery standards, driven by their dependence on public funding and their operational complexity. Transportation infrastructure presents sector-specific challenges - such as time-sensitive user disruptions, multiparty coordination, and asset intersection risks - that demand more robust, automated, and transparent project delivery mechanisms. Blockchain-enabled smart contracts have emerged as a promising solution to address these operational pain points through real-time automation, immutable data records, and decentralized transaction processing. However, …

The Equity Implications Of Pecuniary Externalities On An Electric Grid, Charles Sims, Gasser G. Ali, J. Scott Holladay, Tim Roberson, Chien Fei Chen, Islam H. El-Adaway Dec 2025

The Equity Implications Of Pecuniary Externalities On An Electric Grid, Charles Sims, Gasser G. Ali, J. Scott Holladay, Tim Roberson, Chien Fei Chen, Islam H. El-Adaway

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The adoption of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems can create upward pressure on retail electricity rates as utilities are forced to spread their fixed costs of generation and transmission across a smaller customer base. Since high-income households are more likely to purchase PV systems, low-income households may be disproportionately impacted by these rate increases. Using a novel combination of agent-based computational economic modeling and a choice experiment of rooftop solar adoption, we show how this pecuniary externality between low- and high-income customers increases low-income electricity bills by 10% in an area with some of the highest poverty rates in the United …

This project developed an instructional module that introduces CMU materials, reviews performance and durability attributes of these materials, and how they are linked to well-known rating systems. The final module includes a presentation, three assignments, and one quiz that will reinforce student learning and refresh industry professionals' knowledge. The following …

Life Cycle Assessment Of A Prefabricated Modular Timber Building, Bryan Mai Dec 2025

Life Cycle Assessment Of A Prefabricated Modular Timber Building, Bryan Mai

Construction Management

Traditional concrete construction carries a high carbon footprint, motivating interest in lower-impact alternatives such as prefabricated modular timber systems. This project conducts a process-based life cycle assessment (LCA) using OpenLCA to evaluate the environmental impacts of a modular timber building. Material quantities from major processes were modeled as flow inputs and converted into standardized OpenLCA units. Impact categories—including acidification potential, human toxicity, and energy/resource use—were analyzed to determine which materials and processes contribute most to overall environmental burden. Results show that transportation and plumbing materials drive the largest acidification impacts, while interior finishes dominate human toxicity. This LCA establishes a …

Building Kit For K-8 Education: An Introduction To Construction Fundamentals, Marc Joynt Dec 2025

Building Kit For K-8 Education: An Introduction To Construction Fundamentals, Marc Joynt

Construction Management

Introducing construction concepts to young students requires tools that are both engaging and easy to use, which led to the development of a laser-cut building kit designed for K–8 classrooms. The process began with hand-drawn sketches to establish a simple, age-appropriate structure. The design was then modeled in AutoCAD, where each individual component was drafted for fabrication. After completing the digital model, the files were transferred into Rhino and organized by layer to ensure accurate communication with the laser cutters used to produce the final basswood pieces. Throughout the project, challenges such as material limitations, tolerance adjustments, and simplifying complex …

Toward Autonomous Pavement Inspection: An End-To-End Vision-Based Framework For Pci Computation And Robotic Deployment, Nada El Desouky, Ahmed Torky, Mohamed Elbheiri, Mohamed Eid, Mohamed Ibrahim

Civil Engineering

Advancements in robotics and computer vision are transforming how infrastructure is monitored and maintained. This paper presents a novel, fully automated pipeline for pavement condition assessment that integrates real-time image analysis with PCI (Pavement Condition Index) computation, which is specifically designed for deployment on mobile and robotic platforms. Unlike traditional methods that rely on costly equipment or manual input, the proposed system uses deep learning-based object detection and ensemble segmentation to identify and measure multiple types of road distress directly from 2D imagery, including surface weathering, a key precursor to pothole formation often overlooked in previous studies. Depth estimation is …

Seeing What Matters: Safety-Critical Semantic Segmentation Via Transfer Learning On Construction Sites, Obiora J. Odugu

LSU Master's Theses

Autonomous robots are increasingly deployed on construction sites for tasks such as progress monitoring, inspection, and safety assessment. For these robots to operate effectively, they must perceive and interpret complex, dynamic environments populated by workers, machinery, and unstructured terrain. Achieving reliable perception depends on high performing semantic segmentation models trained on large volumes of annotated data—an expensive and logistically challenging requirement in construction due to privacy restrictions, variable site access, and slow digitalization. This research addresses the challenge of limited labeled data by investigating transfer learning as a label-efficient approach for construction-site segmentation. Specifically, it explores whether road construction imagery—abundant …
