Inclusive Safety Understanding The Safety Managers' Views On The Fit And Function Of Construction Safety Vests For All Body Types, Oliver Anthony Leograndis

Construction Management

With the construction industry evolving to embrace a more diverse workforce, it is crucial that personal protective equipment (PPE) adapts alongside this demographic shift to better accommodate women and those with diverse body types in the industry. To provide tangible momentum for the growing need of inclusive PPE, the Cal Poly Construction Management Department developed and hosted a “Verifying Everybody’s Safety Together” (VEST) Hackathon Event. This event provided an all-encompassing look at women’s construction vests and how they can be improved upon. The event had a variety of construction industry personnel in attendance, including five safety managers of different companies. …

Garden Improvements For "The Ranch", Ayden J. Cole Mar 2023

Garden Improvements For "The Ranch", Ayden J. Cole

Construction Management

The Ranch spans over ten-and-a-half acres and provides employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The core focus of The Ranch is cultivating small crops and raising livestock, which are tended to and harvested by individuals with disabilities. The ultimate aim is to provide them with hands-on experience of working on a farm and how to take care of livestock and grow food. However, the existing property of The Ranch was not exactly what they wanted for their students' learning environment. The existing area where the crops were being grown was not fenced in so critters were getting into the garden …

The Perceptions And Effects Of Nutrition On Worker Health And Productivity In Construction, Matthew Scott Howell Mar 2023

The Perceptions And Effects Of Nutrition On Worker Health And Productivity In Construction, Matthew Scott Howell

Construction Management

Construction workers often have poor dietary habits due to poor nutrition education, lack of nutritious food options, and social stigma. These habits often lead to health problems like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease which can decrease productivity and put workers at risk of on-site injury. This preliminary study examines how nutrition impacts worker safety and productivity. A survey was distributed to six students involved in construction work for Cal Poly’s Residential Construction course. This survey identified their eating habits and inhibitors for healthy eating. Two meals, one with high nutritional value and one with low nutritional value, were given to …

Building Artificial Reefs From Recycled Construction Materials: A Feasibility Study, Nicholas H. Lew Mar 2023

Building Artificial Reefs From Recycled Construction Materials: A Feasibility Study, Nicholas H. Lew

Construction Management

Naturally occurring reefs are some of the world’s most biologically diverse ecosystems formed by jagged rocks tucked slightly below sea level. In recent years global warming began to pose a major threat to many reef habitats. Most relevant is the increase in surface seawater temperatures that cause coral to bleach, taking away major food sources for larger marine species. Researchers have combated this by deploying artificial reefs in substitution for naturally formed limestone rock formations in order to promote the expansion of coastal habitats. This project specifically aims to utilize construction waste towards the production of artificial reefs, effectively upcycling …

Technological Integration To Enhance Jobsite Safety, Luke Barragan Dec 2022

Technological Integration To Enhance Jobsite Safety, Luke Barragan

Construction Management

The content derived in this paper portrays the effect that technology has on safety and how it may be enhanced and altered in the built environment. Ensuring safety on the jobsite is the most important aspect of concluding a successful project. Alongside safety on the jobsite is technology, both of which work coherently together to ensure proper construction. Technology has advanced tremendously in the built environment and it is difficult for all aspects of the project to be up to date universally. Safety lacks the technological integration that is found in the design and preconstruction phases of a project. There …

Lean scheduling and pull planning are both excellent methods of scheduling and sequencing a project. It has made huge impacts on scheduling for general contractors in southern and northern region of California. However, Central California has not been able to see the benefits and impacts of these scheduling tools because of the regions lack of use of lean scheduling and pull planning. Lean scheduling is a technique that encourages communication and collaboration between the project stakeholders. Pull planning offers project stakeholders a chance to rally together and collaborate. These pull planning sessions are useful for sequencing work to meet milestones …

Shape Deformities In Recycled Concrete As A Substitute Aggregate In Concrete, Carson D. Timmerman Dec 2022

Shape Deformities In Recycled Concrete As A Substitute Aggregate In Concrete, Carson D. Timmerman

Construction Management

Concrete is a universal material that is used widely across the construction industry. Within a standard concrete mix, a fine aggregate and a coarse aggregate are added to the mix design to help with solidity and compressive strength in the mixture. The admixtures, additives, slump, and mix ratios will differ based on the compressive strength you're trying to attain. This paper directly reflects the results of the differences between shapes in recycled concrete used as a coarse aggregate substitute in concrete mixes. As the construction industry grows, so does outreach towards sustainability and reusing materials anywhere the industry can. Testing …

Techniques Against Language Barriers: A Company Case Study, Bryan W. Cruz Dec 2022

Techniques Against Language Barriers: A Company Case Study, Bryan W. Cruz

Construction Management

The United States construction industry employed approximately 10.8 million people in 2020. Of these 10.8 million, an estimated 3.3 million, or 30%, were Hispanic workers. On construction job sites, workers are exposed to numerous safety risks, including falls, struck-by incidents, and electrocution. Unfortunately, some Hispanics or workers with limited English language skills encounter language barriers which cause additional safety concerns. Language barriers impact their communication and comprehension abilities and, consequently, their safety. For example, workers who do not speak English do not benefit from safety training conducted purely in English; they also cannot read operation manuals for machinery and equipment …

Risks Involved With Helicopter Operations On A Remote Jobsite, Noah Hohenester Dec 2022

Risks Involved With Helicopter Operations On A Remote Jobsite, Noah Hohenester

Construction Management

Running a jobsite in a remote location adds unpredictable challenges and such experience is difficult to find. In mountainous terrain where road access is limited, the most efficient way to transport materials from the laydown yard to the jobsite is with a helicopter and a longline. Having an active helicopter on site comes with many detailed plans and preparations for safety risks, emergency evacuations, and lifting procedures. Many variables must be accounted for when getting a helicopter usage plan approved, and everyone in the field must be trained appropriately for any potential hazards. Projects like these are unique and many …

Construction Management Outreach Event With The Pedrozzi Foundation, Jennifer Padilla Dec 2022

Construction Management Outreach Event With The Pedrozzi Foundation, Jennifer Padilla

Construction Management

The construction industry today continues to be a male-dominated field, often lacking diversity. The lack of diversity and inclusion is attributed to the lack of equitable access to the industry. Site Development Feasibility Study, Andy A. Tenekjian Dec 2022

Site Development Feasibility Study, Andy A. Tenekjian

Construction Management

A feasibility study in the world of construction is deemed as a preliminary due diligence process in which key components of a project are addressed to determine if the project is viable or not. These components are related to time and money, and the end goal of a feasibility study is to determine if the initial investment of time and money is worth the amount of future financial return. What deems a project successful in the preliminary stage is up for interpretation. Each developer and investor have their own return on investment threshold in a multi-family project like the one …
