Customizable Operating Systems, Jonathan Walpole, Crispin Cowan, Andrew P. Black, Jon Inouye, Calton Pu, Shanwei Cen
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
A customizable operating system is one that can adapt to improve its functionality or performance. The need for customizable and application-specific operating systems has been recognized for many years, but they have yet to appear in the commercial market. This paper explores the notion of operating system customizability and examines the limits of existing approaches. The paper begins by surveying system structuring approaches for the safe and efficient execution of customizable operating systems. Then it discusses the burden that existing approaches impose on application software, and explores techniques for reducing this burden. Finally, support for customizability in the Synthetix project …
Device And Physical Data Independence For Multimedia Presentations, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole, David Maier
Device And Physical Data Independence For Multimedia Presentations, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole, David Maier
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Multimedia computing promises access to any type of visual or aural medium on the desktop. But in this networked future, will every type of media be accessible from every terminal device? Current multimedia standards do not allow content that is authored for high-bandwidth workstations to scale down for low-bandwidth applications. The problem is that application requests are commonly interpreted as requests for the highest possible quality and resource overloads are handled by ad hoc methods. We can begin to solve this problem by specifying Quality of Service (QOS) requirements based on functionality rather than on content encoding and device capabilities.
Quality Of Service Specification For Multimedia Presentations, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole, David Maier
Quality Of Service Specification For Multimedia Presentations, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole, David Maier
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The bandwidth limitations of multimedia systems force tradeoffs between presentation data fidelity and real-time performance. For example, digital video is commonly encoded with lossy compression to reduce bandwidth and frames may be skipped during playback to maintain synchronization. These tradeoffs depend on device performance and physical data representations that are hidden by a database system. If a multimedia database is to support digital video and other continuous media data types, we argue that the database should provide a Quality of Service (QOS) interface to allow application control of presentation timing and information loss tradeoffs.
This paper proposes a data model …

Intelligent Control Of Vehicles: Preliminary Results On The Application Of Learning Automata Techniques To Automated Highway System, Cem Unsal, John S. Bay, Pushkin Kachroo
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
We suggest an intelligent controller for an automated vehicle to plan its own trajectory based on sensor and communication data received. Our intelligent controller is based on an artificial intelligence technique called learning stochastic automata. The automaton can learn the best possible action to avoid collisions using the data received from on-board sensors. The system has the advantage of being able to work in unmodeled stochastic environments. Simulations for the lateral control of a vehicle using this AI method provides encouraging results.
Text Independent Speaker Verification Using Binary-Pair Partitioned Neural Networks, Claude A. Norton Iii
Text Independent Speaker Verification Using Binary-Pair Partitioned Neural Networks, Claude A. Norton Iii
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A method is presented for the application of binary-pair partitioned neural networks to the task of speaker verification. This technique is based on a previously developed neural network classifier for speaker identification.
The main focus of this research was the development and testing of the algorithms necessary to extend the binary-pair partitioning approach from speaker identification to speaker verification. The method is based on the development of a user profile which is obtained from discriminative data provided by the binary-pair partitioned neural networks.
Experimental results are provided which demonstrate the viability of this approach, using the TIMIT speech corpus for …

Atomic Broadcast In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Osman Zeineldine
Atomic Broadcast In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Osman Zeineldine
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Communication services have long been recognized as possessing a dominant effect on both performance and robustness of distributed systems. Distributed applications rely on a multitude of protocols for the support of these services. Of crucial importance are multicast protocols. Reliable multicast protocols enhance the efficiency and robustness of distributed systems. Numerous reliable multicast protocols have been proposed, each differing in the set of assumptions adopted, especially for the communication network. These assumptions make each protocol suitable for a specific environment. The presence of different distributed applications that run on different LANs and single distributed applications that span different LANs mandate …
Safe Stratified Datalog With Integer Order Programs, Peter Revesz
Safe Stratified Datalog With Integer Order Programs, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Guaranteeing termination of programs on all valid inputs is important for database applications. Termination cannot be guaranteed in Stratified Datalog with integer (gap)-order programs on generalized databases because they express any Turing-computable function. This paper introduces a restriction of those programs that can express only computable queries. The restricted language has a high expressive power and a non-elementary data complexity.

Fault Tolerance In Critical Real-Time Systems, Balaji Tirukarneswaran
Fault Tolerance In Critical Real-Time Systems, Balaji Tirukarneswaran
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Critical real-time applications require work to be completed before a predefined deadline, else the consequences may be catastrophic. The anticipation of faults in such systems necessitates the need for fault tolerance. Fault tolerance can be achieved in many different ways. A real-time system designer may impose restrictions on any of the system performance measures such as the latency, throughput and number of processors, depending on the type of application. In this work, several different fault tolerant strategies for any given DFG (Data Flow Graph) are discussed. DFG models are developed using the strategies and the resulting worst case performances a.re …
Comparison Of System Identification Techniques For The Dexterous Orbital Servicing System (Doss), Allan Terrence Morris
Comparison Of System Identification Techniques For The Dexterous Orbital Servicing System (Doss), Allan Terrence Morris
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The major contribution of system identification is the development of analytical models of a system. Many identification techniques can adequately describe the input and output map. One of the challenges of these techniques is to correctly infer from the measured data the characteristics of the individual, contributing components producing a more accurate system model.
In this thesis linear, dynamic, multivariable state-space models for three joints of the Dexterous Orbital Servicing System (DOSS) are identified. DOSS is a representative space station manipulator at the NASA Langley Research Center. The dynamic models of the manipulator will first be estimated by applying nonparametric …
Optimal Mixed-Norm Control Synthesis For Discrete-Time Linear Systems, David R. Jacques
Optimal Mixed-Norm Control Synthesis For Discrete-Time Linear Systems, David R. Jacques
Theses and Dissertations
A mixed-norm approach to control synthesis for discrete time linear systems is developed. Specifically, the problem of minimizing the H2 norm of a transfer function, subject to a combination of ℓ1 and-or H∞ norm constraints on dissimilar but related transfer functions is considered. The uniqueness of the optimal solution is shown, and numerical methods for approximating the optimal solution to within arbitrary accuracy are developed. These methods generally result in high order compensators which can not be implemented in most practical applications. In response to this, a numerical method is developed which solves for suboptimal solutions of …

Real-Time Communication In The Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model, Somesh M. Varma
Real-Time Communication In The Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model, Somesh M. Varma
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to analyze schedules of communication resources to obtain deterministic and contention-free communication in the Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model (ATAMM). In ATAMM, performance must be deterministic to guarantee meeting deadlines. It is difficult to achieve deterministic performance in the presence of contention during communication. This thesis develops new data-flow models to study and analyze different schedules of communication resources to achieve deterministic and contention-free communication. These models are the Synchronous Communication Marked Graph (SCMG) and the Asynchronous Communication Marked Graph (ACMG). The SCMG is based on message passing synchronous communication. It defines schedules for …

Mpvm: A Migration Transparent Version Of Pvm, Jeremy Casas, Dan Clark, Ravi Konuru, Steve Otto, Robert Prouty, Jonathan Walpole
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) is a widely-used software system that allows a heterogeneous set of parallel and serial UNIX-based computers to be programmed as a single message-passing parallel machine, In this paper, an extension to PVM to support dynamic process migration is presented. Support for migration is important in general-purpose workstation environments since it allows parallel computations to co-exist with other applications, using idle-cycles as they become available and off-loading from workstations when they are no longer free. A description and evaluation of the design and implementation of the prototype Migratable PVM system is presented together with some performance results.

Open-Loop State-Space Model Identification From Closed-Loop Data, Lori Guy
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis provides an investigation of a system identification algorithm which identifies an open-loop state-space model from a linear system that is operating under closed-loop conditions. In order to investigate the system identification algorithm some basic ideas of system identification theory are reviewed. Examples using simulated data are presented to characterize the effects of varying the parameters for open-loop and closed-loop system identification processes. Both noise· free and noise contaminated cases are simulated. Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control theory is reviewed and the motivation for using iterative LQG control feedback is discussed. The derivation of the proposed system identification algorithm …
Knowledge Acquisition And Structuring By Multiple Experts In A Group Support Systems Environment, Bernard Lee Lewis
Knowledge Acquisition And Structuring By Multiple Experts In A Group Support Systems Environment, Bernard Lee Lewis
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This study addresses the impact of Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS) on expert system development by multiple Domain Experts. Current approaches to building expert systems rely heavily on knowledge acquisition and prototyping by a Knowledge Engineer working directly with the Domain Expert. Although the complexity of knowledge domains and new organizational approaches demand the involvement of multiple experts, standard procedures limit the ability of the Knowledge Engineer to work with more than one expert at a time.
Group Decision Support Systems offer a networked computerized environment for group work activities, in which multiple experts may express their ideas concurrently and …
Generalization Metrics For Neural Modeling Applications In System Identification, Denise M. Reeves
Generalization Metrics For Neural Modeling Applications In System Identification, Denise M. Reeves
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis a procedure to design multilayer feedforward networks for system identification with good prediction properties is presented. Central to the design procedure is a means to characterize the prediction capabilities of various trained neural networks. Such knowledge will allow for the identification of the best network design. For system identification purposes, a "good" model is one that is good at predicting, In particular, a good model is one that produces small prediction errors when applied to a set of cross-validation data. We formulate and implement a criterion function designed to measure the size of a trained neural network's …

Analysis Of Heads-Up Display Quickening Versus Handling Qualities, Gary M. Konnert
Analysis Of Heads-Up Display Quickening Versus Handling Qualities, Gary M. Konnert
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated an analytical means of selecting the quickening time constant for the standardized Heads-Up Display flight path marker. The theoretically determined time constant allowed a faster, less resource intensive means of selecting the quickening time constant. The theoretically best time constant for pilot-aircraft handling qualities was equal to the airframe pitch attitude high frequency zero time constant, Tθ2. Flight test indicated an empirical, more labor intensive method yielded better handling qualities, even though paper analysis indicated the theoretical method was better. The theoretically determined time constant gave slightly lower handling qualities. but was less costly to …
The Effect Of Repeatedly Sampling An Embedded Metamodel On The Simulation Response, John Kent Patterson
The Effect Of Repeatedly Sampling An Embedded Metamodel On The Simulation Response, John Kent Patterson
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the effect on simulation output of repeatedly sampling an embedded metamodel. A metamodel is said to be embedded within a simulation if it is used to replace a submodule of that simulation. Replacing a deterministic module with an embedded deterministic metamodel poses no apparent mathematical problems. However, using a deterministic metamodel to replace a stochastic simulation component could require additional corrective actions. This research was performed in two phases. The first phase dealt with a set of tandem queues. It was shown that as each queue was sequentially replaced with a metamodel, the total system variance was …
Study Of The Subjet Structure Of Quark And Gluon Jets, D. Buskulic, D., M. Thulasidas
Study Of The Subjet Structure Of Quark And Gluon Jets, D. Buskulic, D., M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Measurements of the subjet structure of quark and gluon jets in hadronic Z decays are presented. The analysis is based on one million hadronic events recorded by the Aleph detector. Roughly symmetric three-jet events are selected with a coarse jet-resolution cut-off, y1. Gluon jets are identified with a purity of 94.6% in those events where evidence of long-lived heavy-flavour hadrons in the other two jets is found. The jets are then analyzed using a smaller cut-off y0 (< y1) so that subjets are resolved. The properties of the jets (subjet multiplicities (Nq), (Ng) and rates Rng(q) for n = 1, 2, 3, 4) are determined and are found to be in good agreement with the expectations of perturbative QCD as long as the subjet resolution parameter y0 is sufficiently large to keep non-perturbative effects small. In particular, the ratio , which to leading order in QCD is given by the ratio of colour factors , is measured to be 1.96 ± 0.15 for y0 = 2 · 10−3, but falls to 1.29 ± 0.03 for y0 = 1.6 · 10−5.
