An Empirical Comparison Of Networks And Routing Strategies For Parallel Computation, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan Oct 1996

An Empirical Comparison Of Networks And Routing Strategies For Parallel Computation, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper compares message routing capabilities of important networks proposed for general-purpose parallel computing. All the networks have been proven to have some type of universality property, i.e., an ability to simulate other networks of comparable cost with modest slowdown, using appropriate cost and communication models. But in this paper we seek an empirical comparison of communication capability under typical direct use rather than an analysis of worst-case results for simulating message traffic of another network.

Resource/Dataflow Graph Operating System Development, Sriram J. Coimbatore Oct 1996

Resource/Dataflow Graph Operating System Development, Sriram J. Coimbatore

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Implementation of a new dataflow schedule model is the objective of this thesis. The dataflow model algorithm called the resource/dataflow graph model is implemented on a peer-to-peer communication network comprising of six personal computers. This dataflow model is implemented making use of an earlier dataflow model called ATAMM (Algorithm to Architecture Mapping Model) developed by ODU and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Development issues include modification of the RDFG testbed operating system and a scheme to transfer data buffers using the ethernet channel from one processor to another processor. This, in turn, equips each sub-module of an application with …

Monte Carlo Simulations Of Photoemission Characteristics From Gaas And Diamond, Abhishek Srivastava Oct 1996

Monte Carlo Simulations Of Photoemission Characteristics From Gaas And Diamond, Abhishek Srivastava

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Monte Carlo based numerical simulations were performed to study photoemission from GaAs and diamond. The central goal was to assess the potential for NEA photoemission from diamond, and to predict its characteristics. The GaAs material system was also included in the simulation study to provide: (i) calibration and validation of the numerical model developed by carefully matching the simulation results with available experimental data, and (ii) quantitative comparisons between the response characteristics of diamond and the better known GaAs system.

Predictions of the energy distribution, temporal response and angular distribution of emitted electrons were obtained. Effects of various parameters, such …

Search For Cp Violation In The Decay Z → B B̄ G, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas Sep 1996

Search For Cp Violation In The Decay Z → B B̄ G, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

About three million hadronic decays of the Z collected by ALEPH in the years 1991 to 1994 are used to search for anomalous CP violation beyond the Standard Model in the decay Z → bb̄g. The study is performed by analyzing angular correlations between the two quarks and the gluon in three-jet events and by measuring the differential two-jet rate. No signal of CP violation is found. For the combinations of anomalous CP violating couplings, ĥb = ĥAbgVh - ĥVbgAb and hb* = √ĥVb2 + ĥAb2, limits of | ĥb | b*

Search For Charginos And Neutralinos With R-Parity Violation At √S = 130 And 136 Gev, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas Sep 1996

Search For Charginos And Neutralinos With R-Parity Violation At √S = 130 And 136 Gev, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searches for charginos and neutralinos produced in e +e - collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV have been performed under the assumptions that R-parity is not conserved, that the dominant R-parity violating coupling involves only leptonic fields, and that the lifetime of the lightest supersymmetric particle can be neglected. In the 5.7 pb -1 data sample collected by ALEPH, no candidate events were found. As a result, chargino and neutralino masses and couplings are constrained and the domains previously excluded at LEP1 are extended.

An Empirical Comparison Of Area-Universal And Other Parallel Computing Networks, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan Sep 1996

An Empirical Comparison Of Area-Universal And Other Parallel Computing Networks, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper provides empirical comparison of the communication capabilities of two area-universal networks, the fat-tree and the fat-pyramid, to the popular mesh and hypercube networks for parallel computation. While area-universal networks have been proven capable of simulating, with modest slowdown, any computation of any other network of comparable area, prior work has generally left open the question of how area-universal networks compare to other networks in practice. Comparisons are performed using techniques of throughput and latency analysis that have previously been applied to k-ary n-cube networks and using various existing models to equate the hardware cost of the networks being …

Mass Limit For The Standard Model Higgs Boson With The Full Lep I Aleph Data Sample, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas Sep 1996

Mass Limit For The Standard Model Higgs Boson With The Full Lep I Aleph Data Sample, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The reaction e+e− → HZ∗ is used to search for the standard model Higgs boson in the Hνν and the Hℓ+ℓ− channels. The data sample corresponds to about 4.5 million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP from 1989 to 1995 at centre-of-mass energies at and around the Z peak. Three candidate events are found in the Hμ+μ− channel, in agreement with the expected background from the electroweak process e+e− ℓ+ℓ−qq. This search results in a 95% C.L. lower limit on the Higgs boson mass of 63.9 GeV/c2.

Single-Layer Channel Routing And Placement With Single-Sided Nets, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih Aug 1996

Single-Layer Channel Routing And Placement With Single-Sided Nets, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper considers the optimal offset, feasible offset, and optimal placement problems for a more general form of single-layer VLSI channel routing than has usually been considered in the past. Most prior works require that every net has exactly one terminal on each side of the channel. As long as only one side of the channel contains multiple terminals of the same net, we provide linear-time solutions to all three problems. Such results are implausible if the placement of terminals is entirely unrestricted; in fact, the size of the output for the feasible offset problem may be Ω(n^2). The linear-time …

Exploring Knowledge Processes For Technology Assimilation, Rochelle K. Young Jul 1996

Exploring Knowledge Processes For Technology Assimilation, Rochelle K. Young

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the emerging knowledge society, the ability to make the experience and expertise of those involved in and affected by new technology unconditionally available to all members of an organization is becoming increasingly important. One of the problems in developing such knowledge processes for technology assimilation is that current social structures do not easily accommodate unconditional participation. Since the implementation of modern information technology is changing the workplace and the nature of work itself, alternative social structures are needed. This research takes as given that deep questions concerning knowledge processes and social transformation are in principle undecidable; and, only questions …

Neural Generalized Predictive Control For Real-Time Control, Donald I. Soloway Jul 1996

Neural Generalized Predictive Control For Real-Time Control, Donald I. Soloway

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis a computationally efficient Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) algorithm is presented and implemented. The algorithm is more efficient than others because the number of iterations needed for convergence is significantly lower with Newton-Raphson. The main additional cost with Newton-Raphson algorithm is the calculation of the Hessian. This overhead is not a problem because of the reduced number of iterations, making the algorithm suitable for real-time control. For nonlinear control applications, a neural network is used as a dynamical system predictor leading to a Neural Generalized Predictive Control (NGPC) algorithm which is presented in detail in this thesis. An …

Visual Speech Recognition Using Multiple Deformable Lip Models, Devi Chandramohan Jul 1996

Visual Speech Recognition Using Multiple Deformable Lip Models, Devi Chandramohan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Motivated by the fact that human speech perception is a bimodal process (auditory and visual), several researchers have designed and implemented automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems consisting of both audio and visual subsystems, and shown improved performance relative to traditional purely auditory systems. Several visual speech reading approaches have used deformable templates to model the shape of a speaker's lips. Deformable templates are models of image objects, which can be deformed by adjusting a set of parameters to match the object in some optimal way, as defined by a cost function. Using a single deformable lip model has disadvantages such …

Concept Hierarchy Memory Model: A Neural Architecture For Conceptual Knowledge Representation, Learning, And Commonsense Reasoning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hui-Shin Vivien Soon Jul 1996

Concept Hierarchy Memory Model: A Neural Architecture For Conceptual Knowledge Representation, Learning, And Commonsense Reasoning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hui-Shin Vivien Soon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This article introduces a neural network based cognitive architecture termed Concept Hierarchy Memory Model (CHMM) for conceptual knowledge representation and commonsense reasoning. CHMM is composed of two subnetworks: a Concept Formation Network (CFN), that acquires concepts based on their sensory representations; and a Concept Hierarchy Network (CHN), that encodes hierarchical relationships between concepts. Based on Adaptive Resonance Associative Map (ARAM), a supervised Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) model, CHMM provides a systematic treatment for concept formation and organization of a concept hierarchy. Specifically, a concept can be learned by sampling activities across multiple sensory fields. By chunking relations between concepts as …

Scheduling Processors For Distributed, Critical, Real-Time Systems, Hari K. Narasimhamurthy Apr 1996

Scheduling Processors For Distributed, Critical, Real-Time Systems, Hari K. Narasimhamurthy

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The development of a procedure to obtain cyclo-static schedules for distributed, critical real-time applications is presented in this thesis. The applications considered in this thesis are characterized by hard deadlines and periodic inputs. The applica tions are described by a data flow graph model which guarantees performance. Given the data flow graph representation, processors are scheduled to complete tasks as specified in the representation. The scheduling technique separates the scheduling of tasks in time and the assignment of processors to tasks. While different criteria exist for task scheduling, a schedule which minimizes latency and maximizes throughput is used in this …

Speech Feature Computation For Visual Speech Articulation Training, Stefan Auberg Apr 1996

Speech Feature Computation For Visual Speech Articulation Training, Stefan Auberg

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A new version of the Visual Speech Articulation Training Aid was implemented which provides real-time visual feedback for speech articulation training. This version was migrated to a Windows Multimedia PC from a previous version which used a Personal Computer (PC) system and additional specialized and expensive custom hardware. This new version will make the system more available to schools and private users. A new method was developed for computing spectral/temporal features which characterize the speech sounds. In addition to the typical frame-based spectral analysis parameters, the new method represents temporal changes of the spectrum with a small number of features. …

Variable Step Size Lms Adaptive Filters With Delayed Coefficient Updating, Guixian Xu Apr 1996

Variable Step Size Lms Adaptive Filters With Delayed Coefficient Updating, Guixian Xu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A new approach to delayed LMS adaptive filtering is presented, which uses a variable step size for coefficient updating to increase convergence speed and improve tracking characteristics. The new algorithm, called delayed variable step size LMS (DVLMS), is explained, analyzed, and simulated to experimentally determine performance characteristics. Three different strategies for adjusting the step size are examined, and their performance is compared. Also, simulation results are presented to show that the proposed DVLMS systems provide faster convergence and lower mis-adjustment than previously proposed DLMS systems.

Adaptive Integration Of Audio And Visual Information Using Discrete And Semi-Continuous Hidden Markov Models In Audiovisual Automatic Speech Recognition, Qin Su Apr 1996

Adaptive Integration Of Audio And Visual Information Using Discrete And Semi-Continuous Hidden Markov Models In Audiovisual Automatic Speech Recognition, Qin Su

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An audiovisual semi-continuous hidden Markov model (HMM)-based Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system and an improved method of integrating audio and visual information in an audiovisual discrete HMM-based ASR system are investigated.

In the audiovisual discrete HMM, an adaptive integration formulation is employed, which incorporates the integration into the HMM at a pre-categorical stage. A visual weighting parameter is determined automatically, which allows the relative contribution of audio and visual information to be adjusted adaptively. Using an adaptive weight, the accuracy increased by 13% compared to the same model with no adaptive weight.

The semi-continuous HMM is a class of models …

Generalized Hidden Filter Markov Models Applied To Speaker Recognition, John M. Colombi Mar 1996

Generalized Hidden Filter Markov Models Applied To Speaker Recognition, John M. Colombi

Theses and Dissertations

Classification of time series has wide Air Force, DoD and commercial interest, from automatic target recognition systems on munitions to recognition of speakers in diverse environments. The ability to effectively model the temporal information contained in a sequence is of paramount importance. Toward this goal, this research develops theoretical extensions to a class of stochastic models and demonstrates their effectiveness on the problem of text-independent (language constrained) speaker recognition. Specifically within the hidden Markov model architecture, additional constraints are implemented which better incorporate observation correlations and context, where standard approaches fail. Two methods of modeling correlations are developed, and their …

In this paper we present an interpretive approach for accurate and cost-effective performance prediction in a high performance computing environment, and describe the design of a compile-time HPF/Fortran 90D performance prediction framework based on this approach. The performance prediction framework has been implemented as a part of the HPF/Fortran 90D application development environment that integrates it with a HPF/Fortran 90D compiler and a functional interpreter. The current implementation of the environment framework is targeted to the iPSC/860 hypercube multicomputer system. A set of benchmarking kernels and application codes have been used to validate the accuracy, utility, and usability of the …

Application Of Autoregressive Moving Average Linear Prediction Filters To The Characterization Of Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Coupling, Carter N. Borst Jan 1996

Application Of Autoregressive Moving Average Linear Prediction Filters To The Characterization Of Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Coupling, Carter N. Borst

Theses and Dissertations

Linear prediction filtering techniques have been used in studying the coupling processes between the solar wind and magnetosphere. The magnetosphere is a complex, dynamic system with at least two independent coupling methods for energy input, driven and unloading. Linear models were built and tested on the Bargatze data set, consisting of over 70 days of geomagnetic indices and solar wind data ordered in 34 intervals of increasing geomagnetic activity. Linear filtering techniques employing single-and multiple-input, autoregressive models predicted values of the magnetic index AL from solar wind data. The impulse response curves of the AL-coupling function groups showed amplitude peaks …

An Algorithm For Message Delivery To Mobile Units, Amy L. Murphy, Gruia-Catalin Roman, George Varghese Jan 1996

An Algorithm For Message Delivery To Mobile Units, Amy L. Murphy, Gruia-Catalin Roman, George Varghese

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

With recent advances in wireless communication and the ubiquity of laptops, mobile computing has become an important research area. An essential problem in mobile computing is the delivery of a message from a source to either a single mobile node, unicast, or to a group of mobile nodes, multicast. Standard solutions used in Mobile IP and cellular phones for the unicast problem rely on tracking the mobile unit. Tracking solutions scale badly when mobile nodes move frequently, and do not generalize well to multicast delivery. Our paper proposes a new message delivery algorithm for micromobility based on a modification of …

Bringing Real-Time Scheduling Theory And Practice Closer For Multimedia Computing, R. Gopalakrishnan, Guru M. Parulkar Jan 1996

Bringing Real-Time Scheduling Theory And Practice Closer For Multimedia Computing, R. Gopalakrishnan, Guru M. Parulkar

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice of real-time scheduling in the domain of multimedia computer systems. We show that scheduling algorithms that are good in theory, often have practical limitations. However when these algorithms are modified based on practical considerations, existing theoretical results cannot be used as they are. In this paper we motivate the need for new scheduling schemes for multimedia protocol processing, and demonstrate their real-time performance in our prototype implementation. We then explain the observed results by analysis and measurement. More specifically, we show that using strict preemption can introduce overheads in …

New Results On Generalized Caching, Saied Hosseini-Khayat Jan 1996

New Results On Generalized Caching, Saied Hosseini-Khayat

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We report a number of new results in generalized caching. This problem arises in modern computer networks in which data objects of various sizes are transmitted frequently. First it is shown that its optimal solution is NP-complete. Then we explore two methods of obtaining nearly optimal answers based on the dynamic programming algorithm that we provided in [5]. These methods enable a trade-off between optimality and speed. It is also shown that LFD (the longest forward distance algorithm which is the optimal policy in the classical case), is no longer optimal but is competitive. We also prove that LRU remains …

A Usability Study Of End-User Construction Of Direct Manipulation User Interfaces, T Paul Mccartney Jan 1996

A Usability Study Of End-User Construction Of Direct Manipulation User Interfaces, T Paul Mccartney

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper describes an empirical study of end-users that tested the usability of The Programmers' Playground graphical environment. The Programmers' Playground is a software library and run-time system for constructing distributed multimedia applications. Playground's graphical environment enables end-users to create direct manipulation graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and to dynamically configure communication among distributed application components. In this study, 28 end-users with no prior experience in distributed computing or user interface construction were timed and evaluated on several tasks using our graphical environment. Tasks included the use of direct and indirect constraint relationships, visual configuration of distributed applications, and graphical user …
