The second survey focuses on graph-based methods for NL text processing and understanding and analyzes them in terms of their functional descriptions, capabilities …

Adaptive Semantic Annotation Of Entity And Concept Mentions In Text, Pablo N. Mendes Jan 2013

Adaptive Semantic Annotation Of Entity And Concept Mentions In Text, Pablo N. Mendes

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The recent years have seen an increase in interest for knowledge repositories that are useful across applications, in contrast to the creation of ad hoc or application-specific databases.

These knowledge repositories figure as a central provider of unambiguous identifiers and semantic relationships between entities. As such, these shared entity descriptions serve as a common vocabulary to exchange and organize information in different formats and for different purposes. Therefore, there has been remarkable interest in systems that are able to automatically tag textual documents with identifiers from shared knowledge repositories so that the content in those documents is described in a …

Mining Diversified Decision Trees Across Multiple Datasets To Capture Similarities And Alignable Differences, Qian Han

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation studies the problem of mining shared and alignable difference knowledge structures across multiple datasets/applications. Shared and alignable difference knowledge structures are important for identifying analogies between application domains and for forming new hypothesis in challenging research applications, and for assessing the degree and types of knowledge-level similarities and differences between application domains for use in learning transfer. Generally speaking, shared knowledge structures characterize underlying datasets and highlight conceptual-level structural similarities among the datasets. This dissertation studies the mining of shared decision trees, which are a special type of shared knowledge structures. We first consider building one shared decision …

Human Performance Regression Testing, Amanda Swearngin, Myra B. Cohen, Bonnie E. John, Rachel K. E. Bellamy

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

As software systems evolve, new interface features such as keyboard shortcuts and toolbars are introduced. While it is common to regression test the new features for functional correctness, there has been less focus on systematic regression testing for usability, due to the effort and time involved in human studies. Cognitive modeling tools such as CogTool provide some help by computing predictions of user performance, but they still require manual effort to describe the user interface and tasks, limiting regression testing efforts. In recent work, we developed CogTool-Helper to reduce the effort required to generate human performance models of existing systems. …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The rotor and magnet loss in single-sided axial flux permanent magnet machines with non-overlapped windings is studied in this paper. FEA estimations of the loss are carried out using both 2-D and 3-D modeling. The rotor and magnet losses are determined separately for stator slot passing and MMF space harmonics from currents in the stator. The segregation of loss between the solid rotor plate and the magnet is addressed. The eddy current loss reduction by magnet segments is discussed as well. The prototype 24 slot/22 pole single-sided AFPMs, fabricated with both single layer and double layer windings are assembled. Methods …

Employing Learning To Improve The Performance Of Meta-Raps, Fatemah Al-Duoli, Ghaith Rabadi Jan 2013

Employing Learning To Improve The Performance Of Meta-Raps, Fatemah Al-Duoli, Ghaith Rabadi

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

In their search for satisfactory solutions to complex combinatorial problems, metaheuristics methods are expected to intelligently explore the solution space. Various forms of memory have been used to achieve this goal and improve the performance of metaheuristics, which warranted the development of the Adaptive Memory Programming (AMP) framework [1]. This paper follows this framework by integrating Machine Learning (ML) concepts into metaheuristics as a way to guide metaheuristics while searching for solutions. The target metaheuristic method is Meta-heuristic for Randomized Priority Search (Meta-RaPS). Similar to most metaheuristics, Meta-RaPS consists of construction and improvement phases. Randomness coupled with a greedy heuristic …

Decision Support For Assorted Populations In Uncertain And Congested Environments, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng Jan 2013

Decision Support For Assorted Populations In Uncertain And Congested Environments, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research is motivated by large scale problems in urban transportation and labor mobility where there is congestion for resources and uncertainty in movement. In such domains, even though the individual agents do not have an identity of their own and do not explicitly interact with other agents, they effect other agents. While there has been much research in handling such implicit effects, it has primarily assumed deterministic movements of agents. We address the issue of decision support for individual agents that are identical and have involuntary movements in dynamic environments. For instance, in a taxi fleet serving a city, …

Uncertain Congestion Games With Assorted Human Agent Populations , Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng Jan 2013

Uncertain Congestion Games With Assorted Human Agent Populations , Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Congestion games model a wide variety of real-world resource congestion problems, such as selfish network routing, traffic route guidance in congested areas, taxi fleet optimization and crowd movement in busy areas. However, existing research in congestion games assumes: (a) deterministic movement of agents between resources; and (b) perfect rationality (i.e. maximizing their own expected value) of all agents. Such assumptions are not reasonable in dynamic domains where decision support has to be provided to humans. For instance, in optimizing the performance of a taxi fleet serving a city, movement of taxis can be involuntary or nondeterministic (decided by the specific …

A Novel Multirobot Map Fusion Strategy For Occupancy Grid Maps, Sebahatti̇n Topal, İsmet Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref Erkmen Jan 2013

A Novel Multirobot Map Fusion Strategy For Occupancy Grid Maps, Sebahatti̇n Topal, İsmet Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref Erkmen

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we consider the problem of merging partial occupancy grid environment maps, which are extracted independently by individual robot units during search and rescue (SAR) operations in icomplex disaster environments. Moreover, these maps are combined using intensity-based and area-based features without knowing the initial position and orientation of the robots. Our proposed approach handles the limitation of existing studies in the literature; for example, the limited overlapped area between partial maps of robots is enough for good merging performance and unstructured and complex partial environment maps can be merged efficiently. These abilities allow multirobot teams to efficiently generate …

A Bacterial Foraging Optimization Approach For Tuning Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controller, Mohammad Kiani, Seyed Mohammad Ali Mohammadi, Ali Akbar Gharaveisi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The type-1 fuzzy sets theory was proposed to handle uncertainty in control systems, but some cases showed some liabilities of type-1 fuzzy sets when faced with unpredictable disturbance and uncertainties. Therefore, type-2 fuzzy sets were introduced and extended while providing more degrees of freedom in designing criteria. The most important specification of type-2 fuzzy sets is the interval between a superior membership function and an inferior membership function, which is called the footprint of uncertainty. This paper presents a bacterial foraging optimization approach for optimizing the parameterized membership function. The above criterion is applied to an automatic voltage regulator system …

A Word Spotting Method For Farsi Machine-Printed Document Images, Yaghoub Pourasad, Houshang Hassibi, Azam Ghorbani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a word spotting approach for Farsi printed document images has been presented. The main idea of the paper is the font recognition of Farsi document images and query word modification according to the document image's font before searching. This operation increases the similarity between the query word image and its instances in the document image; therefore, the performance of the word spotting system increases. In the proposed word spotting approach, after the query word modification, the query word image rectangle is searched in the text lines of the document image using XNOR similarity measurement. In order to …

Investigation Of The Telluric Effects Arising Along The Cathodically Protected Natural Gas Pipeline Between Karadeniz Ereğli And Düzce, Bi̇lal Demi̇rel, Hayri̇ Yalçin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Cathodic protection is one of the most widely used applications for protecting underground and submarine metallic structures from corrosion. This method is based on providing the electrons, which metallic structures lose as a result of electrolytic reaction, by the cathodic protection system. However, from time to time, it may be possible that there is some unwanted interference input into the metallic structure in such applications. This study is aimed at ascertaining the existence, arising frequency, and magnitude of an interference called the telluric effect that is going in and out of the natural gas pipeline between Düzce and Karadeniz Ereğli …

Novel Control Strategy For Voltage Source Converters Based On Energy Function, Sanaz Namayan Tavana, Gevork Gharehpetian, Mehrdad Abedi, Ali Bidadfar Jan 2013

Novel Control Strategy For Voltage Source Converters Based On Energy Function, Sanaz Namayan Tavana, Gevork Gharehpetian, Mehrdad Abedi, Ali Bidadfar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a nonlinear control strategy for pulse-width modulated voltage source converters (VSCs). A passivity-based approach, resulting from the Lyapunov direct method, is presented for designing an effective nonlinear VSC controller to improve their dynamic behaviors under perturbed conditions. The differential equations of the converters are obtained and then transformed into a d-q frame. Considering the nonlinearity of the transformed equations, the Lyapunov direct method is utilized to find a solution to improve the transient response. The time derivative of the Lyapunov function guarantees that increasing its dissipative term will result in the trajectory of the VSC system returning …

Wavelet Multiscale Analysis Of A Power System Load Variance, Samir Avdakovic, Amir Nuhanovic, Mirza Kusljugic, Elvisa Becirovic, Elma Turkovic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Wavelet transform (WT) represents a very attractive mathematical area for just more than 15 years of its research in applications in electrical engineering. This is mainly due to its advantages over other processing techniques and signal analysis, which is reflected in the time-frequency analysis, and so it has an important application in the processing and analysis of time series. In this paper, for example, the analysis of the hourly load of a real power system over the past few years was performed by applying the continuous WT and using the Morlet wavelet function. The results show that this approach of …

Complexity Reduction Of Rbf Multiuser Detector For Ds-Cdma Using A Genetic Algorithm, Mustafa Uğur Torun, Damla Gürkan Kuntalp Jan 2013

Complexity Reduction Of Rbf Multiuser Detector For Ds-Cdma Using A Genetic Algorithm, Mustafa Uğur Torun, Damla Gürkan Kuntalp

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The optimal receiver for detecting direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) signals suffers from computational complexity that increases exponentially with the number of users. Several suboptimal multiuser detectors (MUDs) have been proposed to overcome this problem. Due to the nonlinear nature of the decision boundary of the optimal receiver, it is known that nonlinear receivers outperform linear receivers. Radial basis function (RBF) MUD is a nonlinear suboptimal receiver that can perfectly approximate this decision boundary and it needs no training since it is fully determined when the spreading codes of all users and the channel impulse response (CIR) are …

Capability-Based Task Allocation In Emergency-Response Environments: A Coalition-Formation Approach, Afsaneh Fatemi, Kamran Zamanifar, Naser Nematbakhsh Jan 2013

Capability-Based Task Allocation In Emergency-Response Environments: A Coalition-Formation Approach, Afsaneh Fatemi, Kamran Zamanifar, Naser Nematbakhsh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper addresses coalition formation, based on agent capabilities, centered on task allocation in emergency-response environments (EREs). EREs are environments that need fast task completion as their main requirement. We propose a team-based organization model, based on an existing organization model for adaptive complex systems. The model has some key characteristics that are beneficial for EREs: agents act in dynamic, open domains; agents collaborate in completing group tasks; agents may have similar types of capabilities, but at different levels; tasks need different agent capabilities, at collective different levels; and agents are supervised in a partially decentralized manner. We formulate task …

A Control Algorithm For A Simple Flywheel Energy Storage System To Be Used In Space Applications, Kutlay Aydin, Mehmet Ti̇mur Aydemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Flywheels have been under consideration to be used for energy storage purposes in space applications to replace electrochemical batteries. An electrical machine is used as a motor to store kinetic energy when the solar energy is available, and then the stored energy is converted back to electrical energy by running the machine as a generator when the solar energy is no longer available. A control algorithm for these systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed method uses a current reference rather than a speed reference in the motor mode. A method is also suggested to properly determine the current …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The most important factor for designs in which friction materials are used is the coefficient of friction. The coefficient of friction has been determined taking such variants as velocity, temperature, and pressure into account, which arise from various factors in friction materials, and by analyzing the effects of these variants on friction materials. Many test instruments have been produced in order to determine the coefficient of friction. In this article, a study about the use of machine learning algorithms instead of test instruments in order to determine the coefficient of friction is presented. Isotonic regression was selected as the machine …

Classification Of Power Quality Disturbances Using S-Transform And Tt-Transform Based On The Artificial Neural Network, Sajad Jashfar, Saeed Esmaeili, Mehdi Zareian Jahromi, Mohsen Rahmanian

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The classification of power quality (PQ) disturbances to improve the PQ is an important issue in utilities and industrial factories. In this paper, an approach to classify PQ disturbances is presented. First, a signal containing one of the PQ disturbances, like sag, swell, flicker, interruption, transient, or harmonics, is evaluated using the proposed approach. Afterwards, S-transform and TT-transform are applied to the signal and an artificial neural network is used to recognize the disturbance using S-transform and TT-transform data, like the variance and mean values of S-transform and TT-transform matrices. The main features of the proposed approach are the real-time …

Bidding Strategy Of Generation Companies In A Competitive Electricity Market Using The Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm, Vijaya Kumar Jonnalagadda, Vinod Kumar Dulla Mallesham

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In a competitive electricity market, generation companies need suitable bidding models to maximize their profit. Therefore, each supplier will bid strategically for choosing the bidding coefficients to counter the competitors' bidding strategies. In this paper, the optimal bidding strategy problem is solved using a novel algorithm based on the shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA). It is a memetic metaheuristic that is designed to seek a global optimal solution by performing a heuristic search. It combines the benefits of the genetic-based memetic algorithm (MA) and the social behavior-based particle swarm optimization (PSO). This allows it to have a more precise search …

K-Means Algorithm With A Novel Distance Measure, Shadi Abudalfa, Mohammad Mikki

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we describe an essential problem in data clustering and present some solutions for it. We investigated using distance measures other than Euclidean type for improving the performance of clustering. We also developed an improved point symmetry-based distance measure and proved its efficiency. We developed a k-means algorithm with a novel distance measure that improves the performance of the classical k-means algorithm. The proposed algorithm does not have the worst-case bound on running time that exists in many similar algorithms in the literature. Experimental results shown in this paper demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. We compared …
