Case Study On Wavelet Choice Based On Statistical Image Quality Measures, Igor Vujovic, Ivica Kuzmanic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Surveillance applications are under many negative influences, which should be suppressed, because these negative influences result in incorrectness of the motion mask. Suppression of several conflicting requirements can be optimized by a multiobjective approach. This paper proposes a multiobjective approach to selection of wavelets based on two main objectives: statistical image quality measures and execution time. Execution time is a measure of wavelets complexity. Segmentation is the final goal in order to insure precise operation of any surveillance algorithm. This paper presents a case study considering one, two, three, and four goals for wavelet selection comparison. Different wavelets are found …

Robust Local Parameter Estimator Based On Least Absolute Value Estimator, Volkan Özdemi̇r, Murat Göl

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Changes in weather conditions such as temperature and humidity, miscommunication between the control center and circuit breaker transducers and tap changers, and inaccurate manufacturing data may cause parameter errors. Because of incorrect parameters, the state estimator may provide biased state estimates, which may lead to many serious economic and operational results. In order to prevent that, one must identify and correct those parameter errors. This work proposes a local parameter estimator based on the least absolute value (LAV) estimator, which is known to be robust against bad measurements, i.e. measurements with gross error. Considering the increasing number of phasor measurement …

Sphere Decoding Algorithm For Multiuser Detection In A Distributed Antenna System, Fahad Khawaja, Alam Zaib, Shahid Khattak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the impact of initial search radius on the complexity and performance of a sphere decoding algorithm is investigated for different user positions within a distributed antenna system. In a distributed antenna system, users can take up random positions within the cell clusters. The channel matrix can therefore take up infinitely different forms. In the presented work, a distributed antenna system with three different user positions in the cooperating cells is considered by employing different channel matrices. The effect on the complexity and performance of the sphere decoder due to the choice of the initial sphere radius is …

Method Of Singular Integral Equations In Diffraction By Semi-Infinite Grating: $H$-Polarization Case, Mstislav Kaliberda, Leonid Lytvynenko, Sergey Pogarsky

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Diffraction of the $H$-polarized electromagnetic wave by a semi-infinite strip grating is considered. The scattered field is represented as a superposition of the field induced by the currents on the strips of an infinite periodic grating and the field induced by the correction current excited due to end of the grating. Singular integral equations with additional conditions for infinite and semi-infinite periodic gratings are obtained. The current on the strips and spectral function of scattered field are expressed in terms of the solution of these equations. Numerical results for the near and far fields distribution are represented.

Dielectric Backed Conducting Strips As Inductive Element In Spatial Band-Pass Filter Design, Habib Ghorbaninejad, Ali Ghajar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper a new method has been presented to design spatial band-pass filters consisting of dielectric backed conducting strips. This approach uses an equivalent circuit model in which determined inductive elements are spaced at intervals about half wavelength. To realize the proposed method, the inductive elements have been replaced by dielectric backed conducting strips located at intervals about half wavelength. Half wavelength transmission line sections act as resonators. In this manner the wideness and spacing of strips in each dielectric backed conducting strip, as well as the distance between them, is determined by fitting the characteristic (transfer function) of …

The aim of this paper is to design a nonlinear model predictive control for DC-DC buck converters to track constant reference signals with zero steady-state error. The online trained neural network (NN) model is employed as the predictor and the steady-state error, which is called the offset, is studied in the presence of the changes in system parameters and the external disturbances. The stability of the closed-loop system is investigated using the Lyapunov direct theory. The proposed method can provide offset-free behavior in the presence of constant disturbances. For rejecting nonconstant disturbances, a nonlinear disturbance observer based on the NN …

Modified Control Of The Matrix Converter-Based Drive For Voltage Sag Impact Reduction, Gytis Petrauskas, Gytis Svinkunas Jan 2017

Modified Control Of The Matrix Converter-Based Drive For Voltage Sag Impact Reduction, Gytis Petrauskas, Gytis Svinkunas

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Faults in transmission and distribution networks often cause voltage sags. Direct matrix converter (DMC)-based drives are a new generation of electrical drives. Unlike the conventional two-stage diode supply-side inverter drive, the DMC drive has no direct current (DC) link capacitor and no capacitor charging-time delay before operation. The absence of a DC link makes the DMC-based drive more sensitive to voltage sags. The above-mentioned faults in transmission and distribution networks could degrade the DMC drive's performance and reliability. This paper investigates possible kinds and levels of voltage sags, dependency on network configuration, and the behavior of the DMC-based drive under …

Bayesian Estimation Of Discrete-Time Cellular Neural Network Coefficients, Hakan Meti̇n Özer, Ati̇lla Özmen, Habi̇b Şenol

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new method for finding the network coefficients of a discrete-time cellular neural network (DTCNN) is proposed. This new method uses a probabilistic approach that itself uses Bayesian learning to estimate the network coefficients. A posterior probability density function (PDF) is composed using the likelihood and prior PDFs derived from the system model and prior information, respectively. This posterior PDF is used to draw samples with the help of the Metropolis algorithm, a special case of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm where the proposal distribution function is symmetric, and resulting samples are then averaged to find the minimum mean square error (MMSE) …

Automatic Reduction Of Periodic Noise In Images Using Adaptive Gaussian Star Filter, Seni̇ha Ketenci̇, Ali̇ Gangal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The reduction of noise in images is a crucial issue and an inevitable preprocessing step in image analysis. Many diverse noise sources, which disrupt source images, exist in nature and through manmade devices. Periodic noise is one such disruption that has a periodic pattern in the spatial domain, causing hills in the image spectrum. In practice, quasiperiodic noise is commonly encountered instead of periodic noise. It has a more complex frequency spectrum, such as a star shape, in place of a pure delta shape in the frequency amplitude spectrum. In this study, we consider designing a star shape Gaussian filter …

In this paper, a new special triangular constellation scheme is introduced to replace the commonly used rectangular QAM constellation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. We have shown that this new scheme has 3 major advantages with respect to the well-known QAM. The first advantage is its lower error probability performance, which results from better usage of the constellation space with longer minimum distances. The 2 other advantages are a lower peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and higher noise immunity. Both mathematical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that by applying standard channels in 2 cases, i.e. channels with …
