Cybersecurity of control systems is an important issue in next-generation manufac- turing that can impact both operational objectives (safety and performance) as well as process designs (via hazard analysis). Cyberattacks differ from faults in that they can be coordinated efforts to exploit system vulnerabilities to create otherwise unlikely hazard scenarios. Because coordination and targeted process manipulation can be characteristics of attacks, some of the tactics previously analyzed in our group from a control system cybersecurity perspective have incorporated randomness to attempt to thwart attacks. The underlying assumption for the generation of this randomness has been that it can be achieved …

Generative adversarial networks are being used to make original, AI generated content in many contexts, whether they are generating new works of art from a text description, or a completely fake person. Currently this technology is not being implemented in a way such that a user can practically interact with it in a way where users can actually use what is generated to improve their lives. We introduce OliveAI to explore a possible implementation of generative AI technology that users can practically and usefully interact with. OliveAI is a web app where users can provide a desired type of food …

Music recommendations from apps are traditionally based on attributes like popularity or trendiness. While this method of recommending music may work for finding music in general, it does not address the granularity with which human emotions can change day to day, or even hour to hour. AMBER provides an accessible way to discover and listen to new music that matches one’s emotions in real time using the Spotify music platform and AI. Preliminary test results indicate that users found the music AMBER recommended to be more in line with the emotions they were feeling or wanted to feel. Future developments …

Cross-Issue Correlation Based Opinion Prediction In Cyber Argumentation, Md Mahfuzer Rahman, Xiaoqing "Frank" Liu, Joseph W. Sirrianni, Douglas J. Adams
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
One of the challenging problems in large scale cyber-argumentation platforms is that users often engage and focus only on a few issues and leave other issues under-discussed and under-acknowledged. This kind of non-uniform participation obstructs the argumentation analysis models to retrieve collective intelligence from the underlying discussion. To resolve this problem, we developed an innovative opinion prediction model for a multi-issue cyber-argumentation environment. Our model predicts users’ opinions on the non-participated issues from similar users’ opinions on related issues using intelligent argumentation techniques and a collaborative filtering method. Based on our detailed experimental results on an empirical dataset collected using …

Deep learning approaches play a crucial role in computer-aided diagnosis systems to support clinical decision-making. However, developing such automated solutions is challenging due to the limited availability of annotated medical data. In this study, we proposed a novel and computationally efficient deep learning approach to leverage small data for learning generalizable and domain invariant representations in different medical imaging applications such as malaria, diabetic retinopathy, and tuberculosis. We refer to our approach as Incremental Modular Network Synthesis (IMNS), and the resulting CNNs as Incremental Modular Networks (IMNets). Our IMNS approach is to use small network modules that we call SubNets …
A Nano-Drone Safety Architecture, Connor J. Sexton
A Nano-Drone Safety Architecture, Connor J. Sexton
Master's Theses
As small-form factor drones grow more intelligent, they increasingly require more sophisticated capabilities to record sensor data and system state, ensuring safe and improved operation. Already regulations for black boxes, electronic data recorders (EDRs), for determining liabilities and improving the safety of large-form factor autonomous vehicles are becoming established. Conventional techniques use hardened memory storage units that conserve all sensor (visual) and system operational state; and N-way redundant models for detecting uncertainty in system operation. For small-form factor drones, which are highly limited by weight, power, and computational resources, these techniques become increasingly prohibitive. In this paper, we propose a …

In this research, I designed a study, collected data from the Design Buddies Discord, and conducted semantic content analysis to investigate the community learners, job seekers, and mentors’ dialogues. I then used social network analysis to uncover patterns in connections. Lastly, I conducted a qualitative evaluation to survey and to understand the usefulness of Design Buddies.
The results show that a balance …
Happiness And Policy Implications: A Sociological View, Sarah M. Kahl
Happiness And Policy Implications: A Sociological View, Sarah M. Kahl
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The World Happiness Report is released every year, ranking each country by who is “happier” and explaining the variables and data they have used. This project attempts to build from that base and create a machine learning algorithm that can predict if a country will be in a “happy” or “could be happier” category. Findings show that taking a broader scope of variables can better help predict happiness. Policy implications are discussed in using both big data and considering social indicators to make better and lasting policies.

Solar farms like the Gold Tree Solar Farm at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo have difficulty delivering a consistent level of power output. Cloudy days can trigger a significant drop in the utility of a farm’s solar panels, and an unexpected loss of power from the farm could potentially unbalance the electrical grid. Being able to predict these power output drops in advance could provide valuable time to prepare a grid and keep it stable. Furthermore, with modern data analysis methods such as machine learning, these predictions are becoming more and more accurate – given a sufficient data set. The …

Runtime Energy Savings Based On Machine Learning Models For Multicore Applications, Vaibhav Sundriyal, Masha Sosonkina
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
To improve the power consumption of parallel applications at the runtime, modern processors provide frequency scaling and power limiting capabilities. In this work, a runtime strategy is proposed to maximize energy savings under a given performance degradation. Machine learning techniques were utilized to develop performance models which would provide accurate performance prediction with change in operating core-uncore frequency. Experiments, performed on a node (28 cores) of a modern computing platform showed significant energy savings of as much as 26% with performance degradation of as low as 5% under the proposed strategy compared with the execution in the unlimited power case.
