Pthomas: An Adaptive Information Retrieval System On The Connection Machine., Robert Oddy, Bhaskaran Balakrishnan
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
This paper reports the state of development of PThomas, a network based document retrieval system implemented on a massively parallel fine-grained computer, the Connection Machine. The program is written in C*, an enhancement of the C programming language which exploits the parallelism of the Connection Machine. The system is based on Oddy’s original Thomas program, which was highly parallel in concept, and makes use of the Connection Machine’s single instruction multiple data (SIMD) processing capabilities. After an introduction to systems like Thomas, and their relationship to spreading activation and neural network models, the current state of PThomas is described, including …
Forming Fine Particles, Dennis R. Alexander
Forming Fine Particles, Dennis R. Alexander
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
To alter feedstock material, the material is exposed to laser radiation applied at a selected angle of incidence, intensity and wavelength related to the refractive index of the feedstock material. Fine uniform particles may be formed through vapor explosion and/or plasma formation and used by this method to coat surfaces, such as with paint or adhesive or to suply uniform small particles to a heat engine. Moreover, moving materials such as a column of liquid may be subjected to high internal pressure and temperature for creating physical and chemical changes.

Simple Synchronous Detector For Spectroscopic Studies, Mokhtar Mofidi, M. Keith Hudson, Reagan Cole, James D. Wilson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Lock-in-amplifiers are used in many applications for signal processing and offer the ability to discriminate high levels of noise. While these instruments are very powerful and offer many features, they are not portable and are expensive. An economical and easy to use alternative circuit is presented which incorporates pre-amplification, reference, and synchronous detection on one circuit board. The design can be used in laboratory or process control situations where its small size and low cost are advantageous. The circuit was successfully applied to moderate and high level signals as seen in flame infrared emission detection and in a portable radiometer …
Transforming A Rule-Based Program, Rose F. Gamble
Transforming A Rule-Based Program, Rose F. Gamble
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Conflict resolution is a form of global control used in production systems to achieve an efficient sequential execution of a rule-based program. This type of control is not used to parallel production system models [6,13]. Instead, only those programs that make no assumptions regarding conflict resolution are executed in parallel. Therefore, the initial sequential rule-based programs are either executed in parallel without their conflict resolution strategy, which normally results in incorrect behavior, or the programs are transformed in an ad hoc manner to execute on an particular parallel production system model. As a result, these programs do not exhibit the …

Itasq : An Ada-Based Interactive Tool For Assessing Software Quality, Ruby Marie Heintze
Itasq : An Ada-Based Interactive Tool For Assessing Software Quality, Ruby Marie Heintze
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The goal of producing high quality computer programs brings with it the need for a set of quantitative measures that software engineers can use to measure various aspects of software quality. These quantitative measures, known as software metrics, can measure different aspects of program quality. For example, McCabe's Complexity Metric measures the decision structure of a computer program; Halstead's Software Science measures program "impurities II such as unfactored expressions and unnecessary replacements; and Vitro•s Module Coupling Metric measures data transfer characteristics between modules. Using only one of these metrics would not provide a well rounded measure of overall software quality. …
Multiple Input Node Dataflow Processor Architecture, Gokhan Kuru
Multiple Input Node Dataflow Processor Architecture, Gokhan Kuru
Theses and Dissertations
A new dataflow concept, Multiple Input Node is introduced to overcome the performance and efficiency degradation problems that exist in the current dataflow computation models where the computation unit, node, accepts 2 tokens at a time. Multiple Input Node is a new computation node which has 4 inputs, hence it can accept up to 4 token packets at a time. It can perform any simple arithmetic operation or combination of operations on these 4 input tokens. It is represented by a single instruction and performs the operations in a single instruction execution. This unique Multiple Input Node architecture reduces the …
An Evaluation Of A Prototype Osi-Based Communications Architecture For The Distributed Interactive Simulation Application Utilizing The Isode, Margaret Lucas Loper
An Evaluation Of A Prototype Osi-Based Communications Architecture For The Distributed Interactive Simulation Application Utilizing The Isode, Margaret Lucas Loper
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The advent of computer networking has spawned a wide variety of applications and technologies. Among the most exiciting and pro1nising of these is Distributed Interactive Sin1ulation (DIS). This technology involves the interconnecting of simulated (virtual) environ men ts which allow participants in one simulation to interact, in real time, with those in another simulation, and observe their interactions by means of out-thewindow views of the individual simulators. The key to the evolution and worldwide acceptance of this DIS technology will be the adoption and integration of standard computer networking methodologies (i.e., Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)) into the overall DIS system …
Multi-Input Multi-Output Flight Control System Design For The Yf-16 Using Nonlinear Qft And Pilot Compensation, Russell B. Miller
Multi-Input Multi-Output Flight Control System Design For The Yf-16 Using Nonlinear Qft And Pilot Compensation, Russell B. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Nonlinear Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) and pilot compensation techniques are used to design a 2x2 flight control system for the YF-16 aircraft over a large range of plant uncertainty. The design is based on numerical input- output time histories generated with a FORTRAN implemented nonlinear simulation of the YF-16. The first step of the design process is the generation of a set of equivalent linear time-invariant (LTI) plant models to represent the actual nonlinear plant. It has been proven that the solution to the equivalent plant problem is guaranteed to solve the original nonlinear problem. Standard QFT techniques are then …
A Low-Cost Part-Task Flight Training System: An Application Of A Head Mounted Display, David A. Dahn
A Low-Cost Part-Task Flight Training System: An Application Of A Head Mounted Display, David A. Dahn
Theses and Dissertations
To investigate the feasibility of using head-mounted display(HMD) and Computer Image Generators(CIG) in a low cost part-task trainer, we created a prototype system. Our approach was to build a virtual world interface using a HMD to an existing flight simulator application. This allowed a CIG with only one graphics channel to drive the display. To investigate which class of computing platform was suitable for use as the CIG, a cooperative thesis effort was launched to host the simulator on a mini-computer and micro-computer platform. The appropriate CIG could then be determined through demonstration and comparison between the systems. A software …
Recursive Optimization Of Digital Circuits, John Knutson
Recursive Optimization Of Digital Circuits, John Knutson
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is twofold: first, to identify the advantages and disadvantages of existing optimization systems and second, to develop an optimization system that uses Boolean principles to generate a recursive realization of combinational logic. Current multi-level optimization systems fall into two categories: local optimization which removes redundancy by pattern matching on a local scale and global optimization which works with the equations that specify a circuit rather than with the circuit implementation itself. While global systems are very flexible and can produce near-optimal solutions, they are inherently complex. This research effort demonstrates that an effective global optimization …
Extraction And Measurement Of Multi-Level Parallelism In Productions Systems, George A. Sawyer
Extraction And Measurement Of Multi-Level Parallelism In Productions Systems, George A. Sawyer
Theses and Dissertations
Productions systems provide a flexible and powerful means for expressing and solving problems using high-level reasoning approaches. Unfortunately applications based on the production system paradigm are very compute intensive and therefore execute very slowly on conventional computer architectures. Lack of execution speed therefore limits the use of production systems in many time sensitive and complex tasks. Researchers have demonstrated that increasing the execution speed of production systems through the use of small scale parallel computer architecture is possible, however demonstrated execution speed is still several orders of magnitude below the desired level of performance. Past research indicates that there exists …
Sql/Nf Translator For The Triton Nested Relational Database System, Craig W. Schnepf
Sql/Nf Translator For The Triton Nested Relational Database System, Craig W. Schnepf
Theses and Dissertations
The problem addressed in this thesis concerns the design and implementation of a high level data base query language translator based on the nested relational data model. The objective of the model is to increase the performance of the relational model by modeling real-world objects in the problem domain into nested relations. The translator is designed within the EXODUS extensible architectural framework for building application-specific database systems. The SQL/NF query language used for the nested relational model is an extension of the popular relational model query language SQL. The query language is translated into a nested relational algebra (Colby algebra) …
Graphical Representation Of Parallel Algorithmic Processes, Edward M. Williams
Graphical Representation Of Parallel Algorithmic Processes, Edward M. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Algorithm animation is a visualization method used to enhance understanding of functioning of an algorithm or program. Visualization is used for many purposes, including education, algorithm research, performance analysis, and program debugging. This research applies algorithm animation techniques to programs developed for parallel architectures, with specific on the Intel iPSC/2 hypercube. While both P-time and NP-time algorithms can potentially benefit from using visualization techniques, the set of NP-complete problems provides fertile ground for developing parallel applications, since the combinatoric nature of the problems makes finding the optimum solution impractical. The primary goals for this visualization system are: Data should be …
A Multi-Scale Approach For Recognizing Complex Annotations In Engineering Documents., Andrew Francis Laine, William Ball, Arun Kumar
A Multi-Scale Approach For Recognizing Complex Annotations In Engineering Documents., Andrew Francis Laine, William Ball, Arun Kumar
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
This paper describes a novel method of character recognition targeted for extracting complex annotations found in engineering documents. The results of this work will make it possible to capture the information contained in documents used to support facilities management and manufacturing. The recognition problem is made difficult in part because characters and text may be expressed in arbitrary fonts and orientations. Our approach includes a novel incremental strategy based on the multi-scale representation of wavelet decompositions. Our approach is motivated by biological mechanisms of the human visual systems. Using wavelets as a set of basis functions, we may decompose an …
Segment Streaming For Efficient Pipelined Televisualization, Fengmin Gong
Segment Streaming For Efficient Pipelined Televisualization, Fengmin Gong
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The importance of scientific visualization for both science and engineering endeavors has been well recognized. Televisualization becomes necessary because of the physical distribution of data, computation resources, and users involved in the visualization process. However, televisualization poses a number of challenges to the designers of communication protocols. A pipelined televisualization (PTV) model is proposed for efficient implementation of a class of visualization applications. Central to the proposed research is the development of a segment of streaming IPC (interprocess communication) mechanism in support of efficient pipelining across very high speed internetworks. This requires exploration of special issues arising from extending a …

A software design tool which aids in the performance evaluation and selection of operating points for an algorithm implemented in ATAMM defined data flow architectures is presented in this thesis. ATAMM (Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model) is a new graph theoretic model developed by researchers at Old Dominion University and the NASA-Langley Research Center. ATAMM is capable of modeling the execution of large-grained algorithms on distributed data flow architectures. A software tool is required for predicting the performance, determining the resource requirements and for selecting suitable operating points for an ATAMM based system. The ATAMM Design Tool presented in this …
Highly Concurrent Logically Synchronous Multicast, Kenneth J. Goldman
Highly Concurrent Logically Synchronous Multicast, Kenneth J. Goldman
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
We define the logically synchronous multicast problem, which imposes a natural and useful structure on message delivery order in an asynchronous system. In this problem, a computation proceeds by a sequence of multicasts, in which a process sends a message to some arbitrary subset of the processes, including itself. A logically synchronously multicast protocol must make it appear to every process as if each multicast occurs simultaneously at all participants of that multicast (sender plus receivers). Furthermore, if a process continually wishes to sends a message, it must eventually be permitted to do so. We present a highly concurrent solution …
