Wireless Sensing Without Sensors: An Experimental Study Of Motion/Intrusion Detection Using Rf Irregularity, Wei Qi Lee, Winston K. G. Seah, Hwee-Pink Tan, Zexi Yao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Motion and intrusion detection are often cited as wireless sensor network (WSN) applications with typical configurations comprising clusters of wireless nodes equipped with motion sensors to detect human motion. Currently, WSN performance is subjected to several constraints, namely radio irregularity and finite on-board computation/energy resources. Radio irregularity in radio frequency (RF) propagation rises to a higher level in the presence of human activity due to the absorption effect of the human body. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of monitoring RF transmission for the purpose of intrusion detection through experimentation. With empirical data obtained from the Crossbow TelosB platform …

Effects Of National Culture On Types Of Knowledge Sharing In Virtual Communities, Keng Siau, J. Erickson, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah Oct 2010

Effects Of National Culture On Types Of Knowledge Sharing In Virtual Communities, Keng Siau, J. Erickson, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Organizations are using virtual communities to facilitate knowledge management and to enhance communication among employees, customers, and other interested individuals. Individual users can use virtual communities to engage in knowledge sharing. Professional communicators need to understand and adapt to a globalized and “flat” world, where people across different cultures interact freely and easily with one another in virtual communities. An intriguing question regarding virtual communities relates to whether national culture affects communication and types of knowledge sharing. This study examines the influence of US and Chinese national cultures on types of knowledge-sharing activities in virtual communities. The findings indicate that …

Cluster-Based Distributed Face Tracking In Camera Networks, Josiah Yoder, Henry Medeiros, Johnny Park, Avinash Kak Oct 2010

Cluster-Based Distributed Face Tracking In Camera Networks, Josiah Yoder, Henry Medeiros, Johnny Park, Avinash Kak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we present a distributed multicamera face tracking system suitable for large wired camera networks. Unlike previous multicamera face tracking systems, our system does not require a central server to coordinate the entire tracking effort. Instead, an efficient camera clustering protocol is used to dynamically form groups of cameras for in-network tracking of individual faces. The clustering protocol includes cluster propagation mechanisms that allow the computational load of face tracking to be transferred to different cameras as the target objects move. Furthermore, the dynamic election of cluster leaders provides robustness against system failures. Our experimental results show that …

Electroencephalogram Artifact Removal Using A Wavelet Neural Network, Hoang-Anh T. Nguyen Oct 2010

Electroencephalogram Artifact Removal Using A Wavelet Neural Network, Hoang-Anh T. Nguyen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A wavelet neural network (WNN) technique rs developed for electroencephalogram (EEG) artifact removal without electrooculographic (EOG) recordings. The algorithm combines the universal approximation characteristics of neural networks and the time/frequency property of wavelet, where the neural network was trained on a simulated dataset with known ground truths. The contribution of this thesis is two-fold. First, many EEG artifact removal algorithms, including regression based methods, require reference EOG signals, which are not always available. To remove EEG ai1ifacts, a WNN tries to learn the characteristics of the artifacts first and does not need reference EOG signals once trained. Second, WNNs are …

Fault-Injection Experiment For The Statistical Characterization Of Faults In Avionics Communication System, Amy M. Yates

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Since flight control systems perform safety-critical functions, it is important to understand the possible effects on the closed-loop dynamical system's performance caused by these faults. The purpose of this project is to design the software and hardware needed to add fault-injection and monitoring capabilities to ROBUS-2, a flight communication system. ROBUS-2 is the current version of the fault-tolerant computer communication system used by the Scalable Processor-Independent Design for Enhanced Reliability (SPIDER), a general-purpose fault-tolerant integrated modular architecture (IMA) developed at the NASA Langley Research Center. The major components of SPIDER include processing elements (PEs) to perform calculations, bus interface units …

Maximizing Service Reliability In Distributed Computing Systems With Random Node Failures: Theory And Implementation, Jorge E. Pezoa, Sagar Dhakal, Majeed M. Hayat Oct 2010

Maximizing Service Reliability In Distributed Computing Systems With Random Node Failures: Theory And Implementation, Jorge E. Pezoa, Sagar Dhakal, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In distributed computing systems (DCSs) where server nodes can fail permanently with nonzero probability, the system performance can be assessed by means of the service reliability, defined as the probability of serving all the tasks queued in the DCS before all the nodes fail. This paper presents a rigorous probabilistic framework to analytically characterize the service reliability of a DCS in the presence of communication uncertainties and stochastic topological changes due to node deletions. The framework considers a system composed of heterogeneous nodes with stochastic service and failure times and a communication network imposing random tangible delays. The framework also …

Biological Computation, Melanie Mitchell Sep 2010

Biological Computation, Melanie Mitchell

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, the term biological computation refers to the proposal that living organisms themselves perform computations, and, more specifically, that the abstract ideas of information and computation may be key to understanding biology in a more unified manner. It is important to point out that the study of biological computation is typically not the focus of the field of computational biology, which applies computing tools to the solution of specific biological problems. Likewise, biological computation is distinct from the field of biologically-inspired computing, which borrows ideas from biological systems such as the brain, insect colonies, and the immune system …

Signal Detection Framework Using Semantic Text Mining Techniques, Sithu D. Sudarsan Sep 2010

Signal Detection Framework Using Semantic Text Mining Techniques, Sithu D. Sudarsan

Theses and Dissertations

Signal detection is a challenging task for regulatory and intelligence agencies. Subject matter experts in those agencies analyze documents, generally containing narrative text in a time bound manner for signals by identification, evaluation and confirmation, leading to follow-up action e.g., recalling a defective product or public advisory for potential flu outbreak. Technical challenges to achieve effective signal detection include mining unstructured data, increasing document collections, and presence of multi-domain vocabulary. Lack of annotation and multi-domain vocabulary makes traditional semantic web mining ineffective. Use of heuristics to enhance bag-of-words type text mining to semantic text mining is a novel idea attempted …

Reputation-Based Internet Protocol Security: A Multilayer Security Framework For Mobil Ad Hoc Networks, Timothy H. Lacey Sep 2010

Reputation-Based Internet Protocol Security: A Multilayer Security Framework For Mobil Ad Hoc Networks, Timothy H. Lacey

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort examines the theory, application, and results for a Reputation-based Internet Protocol Security (RIPSec) framework that provides security for an ad-hoc network operating in a hostile environment. In RIPSec, protection from external threats is provided in the form of encrypted communication links and encryption-wrapped nodes while internal threats are mitigated by behavior grading that assigns reputations to nodes based on their demonstrated participation in the routing process. Network availability is provided by behavior grading and round-robin multipath routing. If a node behaves faithfully, it earns a positive reputation over time. If a node misbehaves (for any number of …

Improving The Quality Of Service And Security Of Military Networks With A Network Tasking Order Process, Matthew D. Compton

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents a Network Tasking Order process that collects mission plans, network capabilities, and historical records to build a Network Tasking Order (NTO). The NTO document directs the form and usage of the network, much like an Air Tasking Order (ATO) directs the usage of air power. The NTO process is fleshed out with the content and format of the NTO given herein for the first time. Tools such as topology control algorithms are then shown through simulation to improve the quality of service of the network by finding favorable ways to connect the assets identified during the NTO …

Hijacking User Uploads To Online Persistent Data Repositories For Covert Data Exfiltration, Curtis P. Barnard Sep 2010

Hijacking User Uploads To Online Persistent Data Repositories For Covert Data Exfiltration, Curtis P. Barnard

Theses and Dissertations

As malware has evolved over the years, it has gone from harmless programs that copy themselves into other executables to modern day botnets that perform bank fraud and identity theft. Modern malware often has a need to communicate back to the author, or other machines that are also infected. Several techniques for transmitting this data covertly have been developed over the years which vary significantly in their level of sophistication. This research creates a new covert channel technique for stealing information from a network by piggybacking on user-generated network traffic. Specifically, steganography drop boxes and passive covert channels are merged …

Knowledge-Based Decision Support In Department Of Defense Acquisitions, Clifton L. Hicks Sep 2010

Knowledge-Based Decision Support In Department Of Defense Acquisitions, Clifton L. Hicks

Theses and Dissertations

Despite numerous reform efforts over the past 30 years, acquisition programs in the Department of Defense (DoD) continue to experience cost overruns and schedule delays. One contributing factor is the decision-making process used by defense officials. The General Accounting Office (GAO) has stated that ‘poor program outcomes are the lack of widespread adoption of a knowledge-based acquisition process within DoD despite polices that support such a process. A knowledge-based business case at the outset of each program would alleviate overpromising on cost, schedule, and performance and would empower program managers.’ Effective decision-making for acquisition programs is very important. It not …

Applying Image Matching To Video Analysis, Adam J. Behring Sep 2010

Applying Image Matching To Video Analysis, Adam J. Behring

Theses and Dissertations

Dealing with the volume of multimedia collected on a daily basis for intelligence gathering and digital forensics investigations requires significant manual analysis. A component of this problem is that a video may be reanalyzed that has already been analyzed. Identifying duplicate video sequences is difficult due to differences in videos of varying quality and size. This research uses a kd-tree structure to increase image matching speed. Keypoints are generated and added to a kd-tree of a large dimensionality (128 dimensions). All of the keypoints for the set of images are used to construct a global kd-tree, which allows nearest neighbor …

A Tutorial On Functional Program Verification, Yoonsik Cheon, Melisa Vela Sep 2010

From Interval And Probabilistic Granules To Granules Of Higher Order, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2010

From Interval And Probabilistic Granules To Granules Of Higher Order, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Constructive mathematics, mathematics in which the existence of an object means that that we can actually construct this object, started as a heavily restricted version of mathematics, a version in which many commonly used mathematical techniques (like the Law of Excluded Middle) were forbidden to maintain constructivity. Eventually, it turned out that not only constructive mathematics is not a weakened version of the classical one -- as it was originally perceived -- but that, vice versa, classical mathematics can be viewed as a particular (thus, weaker) case of the constructive one. Crucial results in this direction were obtained by M. …

Visualization To Support The Discovery Of Prosodic Contours Related To Turn-Taking, Nigel Ward, Joshua L. Mccartney Sep 2010

Visualization To Support The Discovery Of Prosodic Contours Related To Turn-Taking, Nigel Ward, Joshua L. Mccartney

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Some meaningful prosodic patterns can be usefully represented with pitch contours, however the development of such descriptions is a labor-intensive process. To assist in the discovery of contours, visualization tools may be helpful. Edlund et al. (2009) presented the idea of superimposing hundreds of pitch curves from a corpus as a way to see the overall patterns. In this paper we refine and extend this method and illustrate its utility in the discovery of a prosodic cue to back-channels in Chinese. We also discuss issues in relating a contour-based description to one in terms of a conjunction of features, and …

Computing Standard-Deviation-To-Mean And Variance-To-Mean Ratios Under Interval Uncertainty Is Np-Hard, Sio-Long Lo Sep 2010

Computing Standard-Deviation-To-Mean And Variance-To-Mean Ratios Under Interval Uncertainty Is Np-Hard, Sio-Long Lo

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Once we have a collection of values x1, ..., ,xn corresponding a class of objects, a usual way to decide whether a new object with the value x of the corresponding property belongs to this class is to check whether the value x belongs to interval [E - k0 * s, E + k0 * s], where E = (1/n) * (x1 + ... + xn) is the sample mean, V = s^2 = (1/n) * ((x1 - E)^2 + ... + (xn - E)^2) is the sample variance, and the parameter k0 is determined by the degree of confidence …

Cloud Computing:Strategies For Cloud Computing Adoption, Faith Shimba Sep 2010

Cloud Computing:Strategies For Cloud Computing Adoption, Faith Shimba

Dissertations

The advent of cloud computing in recent years has sparked an interest from different organisations, institutions and users to take advantage of web applications. This is a result of the new economic model for the Information Technology (IT) department that cloud computing promises. The model promises a shift from an organisation required to invest heavily for limited IT resources that are internally managed, to a model where the organisation can buy or rent resources that are managed by a cloud provider, and pay per use. Cloud computing also promises scalability of resources and on-demand availability of resources.

Although, the adoption …

A Cross-Layer Modification To The Dsr Routing Protocol In Wireless Mesh Networks, Mustafa Ramadhan Sep 2010

A Cross-Layer Modification To The Dsr Routing Protocol In Wireless Mesh Networks, Mustafa Ramadhan

Doctoral

A cross-layer modification to the DSR routing protocol that finds high throughput paths in WMNs has been introduced in this work. The Access Efficiency Factor (AEF) has been introduced in this modification as a local congestion avoidance metric for the DSR routing mechanism as an alternative to the hop count (Hc) metric. In this modification, the selected path is identified by finding a path with the highest minimum AEF (max_min_AEF) value. The basis of this study is to compare the performance of the Hc and max_min_AEF as routing metrics for the DSR protocol in WMNs using the OPNET modeler. Performance …

Sql Querie Recommendations: A Query Fragment-Based Approach, Jayad Akbarnejad, Magdalini Eirinaki, Suju Koshy, Duc On, Neoklis Polyzotis Sep 2010

Sql Querie Recommendations: A Query Fragment-Based Approach, Jayad Akbarnejad, Magdalini Eirinaki, Suju Koshy, Duc On, Neoklis Polyzotis

Faculty Publications

Relational database systems are becoming increasingly popular in the scientific community to support the interactive exploration of large volumes of data. In this scenario, users employ a query interface (typically, a web-based client) to issue a series of SQL queries that aim to analyze the data and mine it for interesting information. First-time users, however, may not have the necessary knowledge to know where to start their exploration. Other times, users may simply overlook queries that retrieve important information. In this work we describe a framework to assist non-expert users by providing personalized query recommendations. The querying behavior of the …

Personal Vs. Social, Magdalini Eirinaki Sep 2010

Personal Vs. Social, Magdalini Eirinaki

Faculty Publications

The last few years we witnessed an impressive growth in social networks and in applications that add value to their amassed information. At the same time, the continuing expansion of mobile platforms and applications (e.g. iPhone), combined with the overwhelming supply of information and services, makes effective personalization and context-awareness much required features. One may consider "personal" and "social" data management as comprising two distinct directions with conflicting characteristics. However, it can be argued that they complement each other and that in future applications they will ultimately converge. This "personal vs. social" predicament presents a number of interesting topics that …

Online Drift Compensation For Chemical Sensors Using Estimation Theory, Thomas H. Wenzel, Arnold Kweku Mensah-Brown, Fabien Josse, Edwin E. Yaz Sep 2010

Online Drift Compensation For Chemical Sensors Using Estimation Theory, Thomas H. Wenzel, Arnold Kweku Mensah-Brown, Fabien Josse, Edwin E. Yaz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Sensor drift from slowly changing environmental conditions and other instabilities can greatly degrade a chemical sensor's performance, resulting in poor identification and analyte quantification. In the present work, estimation theory (i.e., various forms of the Kalman filter) is used for online compensation of baseline drift in the response of chemical sensors. Two different cases, which depend on the knowledge of the characteristics of the sensor system, are studied. First, an unknown input is considered, which represents the practical case of analyte detection and quantification. Then, the more general case, in which the sensor parameters and the input are both unknown, …

Architecture And Compiler Support For Leakage Reduction Using Power Gating In Microprocessors, Soumyaroop Roy Aug 2010

Architecture And Compiler Support For Leakage Reduction Using Power Gating In Microprocessors, Soumyaroop Roy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Power gating is a technique commonly used for runtime leakage reduction in digital CMOS circuits. In microprocessors, power gating can be implemented by using sleep transistors to selectively deactivate circuit modules when they are idle during program execution. In this dissertation, a framework for power gating arithmetic functional units in embedded microprocessors with architecture and compiler support is proposed. During compile time, program regions are identified where one or more functional units are idle and sleep instructions are inserted into the code so that those units can be put to sleep during program execution. Subsequently, when their need is detected …
