Organizations of all types are prone to cybersecurity and information security attacks. Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are not exempt from using information technology solutions and, thus, have been the recipient victims of cyber attackers. There exist many areas and venues where data are collected to report back annually on the status and numbers of cybersecurity attacks against many sectors of our society. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) catalogs sixteen critical sectors that are considered vital to the United States. However, finding where the NPO and NGO community should reside with …

Illegal money changers pose a number of risks to the financial system, including but not limited to money laundering, fraud, and other under-the-carpet dealings intended to frustrate regulatory efforts for financial integrity. The efficiency and accuracy of anti-money laundering (AML) measures using machine learning (ML) models in the detection of suspicious patterns in bank card transactions are investigated in this paper. The key focus will be to develop an efficient machine learning framework that should be proficient in underlining main transactions dealing with illegal money changers and other similar fraudulent activities. The features indicative of illicit behaviour are determined by …

Cyber Threat Intelligence Sharing In Nigeria, Muhammad Abubakar Nainna, Julian Bass, Lee Speakman
Communications of the IIMA
Cybersecurity challenges are common in Nigeria. Sharing cyber threat intelligence is essential in addressing the extensive challenges posed by cyber threats. It also helps in meeting regulatory compliance. There are a range of impediments that prevent cyber threat intelligence sharing. We hypothesise that we want to maximise this cyber threat intelligence sharing to resist malicious attackers. Therefore, this research investigates factors influencing threat intelligence sharing in Nigeria's cyber security practitioners. To achieve this aim, we conducted research interviews with 14 cyber security practitioners using a semi-structured, open-ended interview guide, which was recorded and transcribed. We analysed the data using an …

Reducing Attack Opportunities Through Decentralized Event-Triggered Control, Paul Griffioen, Raffaele Romagnoli, Bruce H. Krogh, Bruno Sinopoli
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Cyber-physical systems are prevalent in many critical infrastructures and are vulnerable to a variety of attacks from the network. Decentralized control systems are particularly vulnerable since they rely heavily on network communication to achieve their goals. To address network vulnerabilities, we present an event-triggered network connection and communication protocol that minimizes the amount of time agents are connected to the network, reducing the window of opportunity for attacks. This mechanism is a function of only local information and ensures stability for the overall system in attack-free scenarios. Our approach distinguishes itself from current decentralized event-triggered control strategies by considering an …

Climate change education is crucial for fostering informed and engaged future generations. However, traditional pedagogies often fail to engage learners fully and provide real-world, experiential learning. This paper presents a novel approach to climate change education through a three-day virtual reality (VR) hackathon. The hackathon focused on four United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—Quality Education, Affordable and Clean Energy, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Climate Action. Using VR technology and game design software, engineering students worked in teams. They competed against each other in designing immersive environments that demonstrated their understanding of these SDGs and climate change. Our goal …

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one of the most prevalent genetic blood disorders affecting millions of people worldwide. It is often accompanied by acute and/or chronic pain leading to increased healthcare costs and adverse outcomes. Effective management of SCD requires an understanding of the diverse physiological profiles. This study employs unsupervised machine learning, specifically K-means clustering to categorize the patients suffering with SCD into different clusters based on their vital signs. The main aim is to identify the groups that reflect similarities in physiological and pain profiles, allowing an in-depth analysis to reveal distinctive features distinguishing patient clusters. The project …

Base Station Selection Based On The Predicted Dwell Time In 5g-V2x Handover, Anushree Jayesh Shah
Master's Projects
Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) networks have facilitated smooth communication in vehicles and their surroundings via 5G technology. As vehicles move into different coverage areas, they tend to switch between cellular base stations in order to talk to these "things". Handovers are crucial to maintaining these networks’ effectiveness. To ensure uninterrupted connectivity and seamless handovers, it is extremely important to select a base station that is most appropriate. A vehicle’s dwell time is the duration it stays connected to a base station before handoff. This research focuses on predicting dwell time using regression techniques to proactively choose the most suitable base station. We …

Chronic Kidney Disease Android Application, Paul Le
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Chronic kidney disease is increasingly recognized as a leading public health problem over the world that affects more than 10 percent of the population worldwide, where electrolytes and wastes can build up in your system. Kidney failure might not be noticeable until more advanced stages where it may then become fatal if not for artificial filtering or a transplant. As a result, it is important to detect kidney disease early on to prevent it from progressing to kidney failure. The current main test of the disease is a blood test that measures the levels of a waste product called creatine …

There are over 590,000 bridges dispersed across the roadway network that stretches across the United States alone. Each bridge with a length of 20 feet or greater must be inspected at least once every 24 months, according to the Federal Highway Act (FHWA) of 1968. This research developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based framework for bridge and road inspection using drones with multiple sensors collecting capabilities. It is not sufficient to conduct inspections of bridges and roads using cameras alone, so the research team utilized an infrared (IR) camera along with a high-resolution optical camera. In many instances, the IR camera …
