The North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing - Lateral Design, AISI S213-07, provides design provisions for cold-formed steel framed shear walls with steel sheet sheathing. However, options are limited to 18-mil and 27-mil steel sheet sheathing. Presented in this report are the findings from an extensive monotonic and cyclic testing program conducted at the University of North Texas of 30-mil and 33-mil steel sheet sheathed shear walls with 2:1 and 4:1 aspect ratios and 27-mil sheet steel shear walls with 2:1 aspect ratio and 6-in., 4-in., 3-in., and 2-in. fastener spacing at panel edges. It is anticipated that the …

In cold-formed steel construction, stud walls covered with steel sheet sheathing is an available option to resist lateral loads such as those caused by wind and earthquakes. The current American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing - Lateral Design 2004 Edition provides nominal shear strength for a limited range of steel sheet sheathed shear wall configurations. This report presents a research project developed to add values for 0.030-in. and 0.033-in. steel sheet sheathed shear walls with 2:1 and 4:1 aspect ratios and 0.027-in. sheet steel shear walls with 2:1 aspect ratio and 6-in., 4-in., 3-in., and …

Assessment Of The Bill Emerson Memorial Cable-Stayed Bridge Based On Seismic Instrumentation Data, Genda Chen, Dongming Yan, Wenjian Wang, Man Zheng, Louis Ge, Frank Liu
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this study, both ambient and earthquake data measured from the Bill Emerson Memorial Cable-stayed Bridge are reported and analyzed. Based on the seismic instrumentation data, the vibration characteristics of the bridge are investigated and used to validate a three-dimensional Finite Element (3-D FE) model of the bridge structure. The 3-D model is rigorous and comprehensive, representing realistic dynamic behaviors of the bridge. It takes into account the geometric nonlinear properties caused by cable sagging and soil-foundation-structure interaction in the Illinois approach of the bridge. The FE model is successfully verified and validated by using the natural frequencies and mode …

Peltier devices are a method of converting differences in temperature into electrical energy. Using data from a supplier of these devices, calculations were made to determine the efficiency of these devices in conjunction with a residential solar hybrid electric system. The initial calculations show efficiencies less than 2% with the temperature differences experienced during the springtime. While this efficiency doesn't sound stellar, taking into account the current efficiency of residential solar cells, this would be an appreciable addition to the power output of a residential solar system.

This report presents the results of 16 monotonic and 28 cyclic tests of flat strap X-braced walls, steel sheathed shear walls, high aspect ratio shear walls and shear walls framed with 54-mil and 43-mil studs. The findings provided a basis for continued research and development efforts, leading to the establishment of provisions for cold-formed steel-framed diagonal strap braced walls and Type I shear walls.

Structural Damage Detections based on the Changes of Dynamic Properties Are a Major Concern Tor Structural Health Monitoring. in This Paper. Efforts Are Made to Extend the Flexibility-Based Damage Localization Methods, Especially the Damage Locating Vector (DLV) Method, to the Case of Ambient Vibration with Incomplete Measured Degree of Freedom, Where Flexibility Matrices Are Not Available. First, the Method to Assemble a Proportional Flexibility Matrix (PFM) with Arbitrarily Scaled Modal Shapes of Full Measured Degrees of Freedom (DOF) is Introduced. the PFM is within a Scalar Multiplier to the Real Flexibility Matrix, and the Multiplier is Shown to Be the …

Self-Compacting Concrete is a New Type of Concrete Which is More Liquid Compared to Traditional Concrete and Which Does Not Need Any Form of External Compaction. as a Result, This Type of Concrete is Suitable for a New Placing Technique: Pumping SCC from the Bottom in the Formwork and Letting It Rise in the Formwork Due to the Applied Pressure. in Order to Understand the Phenomena Occurring during Pumping Operations, the Rheological Properties of SCC Must Be Investigated and Controlled. Tests Have Been Performed with Two Different Rheometers, Which Are Described in This Paper. for the Tattersall MIk-II Rheometer, a …

Visual Traffic Movement Counts At Intersection For Origin-Destination (O-D) Trip Table Estimation, S. Lee, Hojong Baik, J. Park
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Origin-destination (O-D) trip table is necessary information for transportation planning and traffic impact study. However, current O-D estimations rely on estimated directional traffic counts at intersections, which obviously diminish reliability in the table. A video-based vehicle tracking system that utilizes wide view-angle lenses has been studied [26] to provide accurate direction traffic counts. The system expands the area covered by a single camera and uses a particle filtering method to handle environmental changes as well as geometric distortion caused by those lenses. This paper shows tracking capability of the system and also shows how to incorporate the directional traffic counts …

With a very modest investment in computer hardware and the open-source local data manger (LDM) software from UCAR's Unidata Program Center, an individual researcher can receive a variety of NEXRAD Level III gridded rainfall products, and the unprocessed Level II data in real-time from most NEXRAD radars. Additionally, the National Climatic Data Center has vast archives of these products and Level II data. Still, significant obstacles remain in order to unlock the full potential of the data. One set of obstacles is related to effective management of multi-terabyte data sets: storing, compressing, and backing up. A second set of obstacles, …

The Hydro-NEXRAD radar-rainfall estimation algorithms involve three main components: 1) preprocessing, 2) rain rate, and 3) rainfall accumulation. The preprocessing algorithm performs the quality control of reflectivity volume data and generates a hybrid scan. That is, reflectivity values for each azimuth and range bin are assigned from the several lowest elevation angles. It optionally estimates an azimuth-dependent vertical reflectivity profile and performs a correction for range effects. The rain rate algorithm converts the corrected reflectivity to rainfall intensity. The user can specify any power-law type empirical relationship between reflectivity and rainfall intensity. The last step of rainfall estimation is to …

Improved conductivity has been achieved by controllable substitution of an ultraviolet electronic conductor. The transparent conducting oxide system, H-doped Ca12Al(14−x)SixO(33+x/2) with x=0−4, exhibits a conductivity strongly dependent on the substitution level. Four-point direct current conductivity increases with x from 0.15 to 0.61 S/cm at room temperature. The observed conductivity behavior is consistent with the predictions of our first principles density functional calculations for the Si-substituted system with x=0, 2, and 4. Furthermore, the Seebeck coefficient is composition dependent suggesting the existence of an activated mobility associated with small polaron conduction. ©2007 American Institute of Physics
