An Investigation Into The Potential Of Increasing The Span Of Solid Slab Deck Bridges, Eamonn Kiernan
An Investigation Into The Potential Of Increasing The Span Of Solid Slab Deck Bridges, Eamonn Kiernan
Theses
Solid slab deck bridges are a common type of structure employed for short to medium span bridges. They may be of rapid build nature if they are made up of prestressed precast sections with concrete infill deck.
The aim of this research was to investigate the potential to increase the span of solid slab deck bridges by the employment of high strength concrete (HSC), lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) and the use of a voided deck.
The analysis undertaken in the research was based on a bridge, which was recently constructed in Cork; the bridge was constructed using MY beam sections, …
The Potential For The Elimination Of Expansion Joints And Bridge Bearings From Existing Road Bridges In Ireland, Conor Keena
The Potential For The Elimination Of Expansion Joints And Bridge Bearings From Existing Road Bridges In Ireland, Conor Keena
Theses
This research was focused on determining the feasibility of eliminating expansion joints and bridge bearings from existing short to medium span road bridges in Ireland. It is possible that this could provide a significant long-term economic benefit to bridge owners. A literature review was carried out as part of the research. This included investigations into research conducted in the areas of thermal movements of bridges, concrete creep and shrinkage, soil-structure interaction, lifetime costing, design standards and finite element analysis, and the elimination of bridge expansion joints in other countries.
Finite element analyses were carried out on two existing road bridges. …
Development Of A Scale Model Wind Turbine For Testing Of Offshore Floating Wind Turbine Systems, Heather Rae Martin
Development Of A Scale Model Wind Turbine For Testing Of Offshore Floating Wind Turbine Systems, Heather Rae Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the development of a 1/50th scale 5 MW wind turbine intended for wind and wave basin model testing of commercially viable floating wind turbine structures. The design is based on a popular 5 MW wind turbine designed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) commonly utilized in numerical modeling efforts. The model wind turbine is to accompany generic floating model platforms for basin model testing. The ultimate goal of the model development testing program is to collect data for validating various floating wind turbine simulation codes such as those developed by NREL. This thesis will present an …
Numerical Modeling Of Concrete Masonry Walls Strengthened By Fiber Reinforced Polymers Under Lateral Loads, Mohamed Salama
Numerical Modeling Of Concrete Masonry Walls Strengthened By Fiber Reinforced Polymers Under Lateral Loads, Mohamed Salama
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The use of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) for the seismic retrofit of masonry walls is on the rise. Design formulae are available to estimate the lateral load capacity of the strengthened walls. However, recent experimental data from tests conducted on full scale concrete masonry walls under cyclic lateral loads have shown that these design capacities have not been reached because of the occurrence of other failure modes not accounted for in the design formulae. The limiting failure mode in all test samples referred to in this work was due to premature compression failure of the masonry units at the wall …
Design Of A Pedestrian Bridge System Across Lake Kernan At Southern University, Symoane A. Mizell
Design Of A Pedestrian Bridge System Across Lake Kernan At Southern University, Symoane A. Mizell
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
Bridges are of the oldest structural challenges that engineers have encountered, they typify progress more than any other structures built by man. Throughout the course of history, bridges have provided dual purposes of serving as adjuncts between land bodies and also of acting as aesthetic marks of beauty. The idea that the addition of a bridge and other aesthetic structures across the lake would help cure some of Lake Kernan' s ills is the motivation for this design project and this thesis. This design project is a valuable lesson for the members of this design group. The project encompasses many …
