Wind energy has witnessed a consistent expansion over the past decade, especially with the move to offshore installation. There is an increasing need to further exploit superior offshore wind resources, which is pushing multi-megawatt wind turbines into deeper water locations where the current popular horizontal axis wind turbine configuration is not entirely suitable. Recent advances in microbiology, computational capabilities, and microelectromechanical-system fabrication techniques permit modeling, design, and fabrication of low-cost, miniature, sensitive and selective liquid-phase sensors and labon- a-chip systems. Such devices are expected to replace expensive, time-consuming, and bulky laboratory-based testing equipment. Potential applications for devices include: fluid characterization for material science and industry; chemical analysis in medicine and pharmacology; study of biological processes; food analysis; chemical kinetics analysis; and environmental monitoring. When combined with liquid-phase packaging, sensors based on surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) technology are considered strong candidates. This thesis is a summary of testing conducted with a Darrieus style cross-flow tidal turbine. Many locations around the world have locations suitable for tidal turbine energy, including the Cobscook Bay in Eastport, Maine. Cross-flow turbines are likely to have a smaller impact on the environment compared to axial flow turbines due to their operation at lower tip speed ratios. Since very little experimental data is available presently for cross-flow turbines, this study provides an expansive set of performance data for two NACA series blade profiles of the same chord length. This research was focused on determining the feasibility of eliminating expansion joints and bridge bearings from existing short to medium span road bridges in Ireland. It is possible that this could provide a significant long-term economic benefit to bridge owners. A literature review was carried out as part of the research. This included investigations into research conducted in the areas of thermal movements of bridges, concrete creep and shrinkage, soil-structure interaction, lifetime costing, design standards and finite element analysis, and the elimination of bridge expansion joints in other countries.

Mobile robots could be used to search, find, and relocate objects in many types of manufacturing operations and environments. In this scenario, the target objects might reside with equal probability at any location in the environment and, therefore, the robot must navigate and search the whole area autonomously, and be equipped with specific sensors to detect objects. Novel challenges exist in developing a control system, which helps a mobile robot achieve such tasks, including constructing enhanced systems for navigation, and vision-based object recognition. This thesis presents the development of a 1/50th scale 5 MW wind turbine intended for wind and wave basin model testing of commercially viable floating wind turbine structures. The design is based on a popular 5 MW wind turbine designed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) commonly utilized in numerical modeling efforts. The model wind turbine is to accompany generic floating model platforms for basin model testing. The use of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) for the seismic retrofit of masonry walls is on the rise. Design formulae are available to estimate the lateral load capacity of the strengthened walls. However, recent experimental data from tests conducted on full scale concrete masonry walls under cyclic lateral loads have shown that these design capacities have not been reached because of the occurrence of other failure modes not accounted for in the design formulae. Network failures which may be caused by human errors, malfunctional systems and natural disaster (eg. A ramjet inlet duct structure has been designed using nonlinear structural analysis to allow local plastic deformations which result in structural weight reduction. To establish the feasibility of reduced shell thickness, the Lower-Bound Theorem of limit analysis has been applied using an existing finite element analysis computer code intended for elastic analysis. The results of the analysis were verified by structural testing. Predicted stresses and deflections showed good correlation with measured values up to the point of failure. This work was supported by the U.S. Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, under Contract No. F33615-72-C-1366.

A method is presented which permits the measure of nose tip recession of re-entry vehicles and advanced terminal interceptors by employing a double choked flow coolant gas system. Recession of the tip results in an increased exit flow area which reduces the total pressure of the gas in the blast tube. Measurement of the blast tube pressure and gas generator (chamber) pressure will produce an effective measurement of the nose tip recession as long as choked flow (i.e., sonic velocity) is maintained in both the tip exit area and the gas generator throat area. Mass transit vehicles in formal rail service frequently attain speeds which can excited carbody oscillations (primary hunting), as well as sustained lateral oscillations of the trucks (secondary hunting). The carbody motions have been shown to generate passenger discomfort and sustained truck hunting can lead to derailment. This thesis developed approximate equations which predict the carbody hunting frequencies, as well as the hunting speed of an articulated frame truck. The linear equations of motion are derived from a simplified model of a railway vehicle.
