Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
This thesis focuses on investigating the influence of urbanization and development on flow regime and river channel hydraulics in the Bear Creek watershed, Texas using a comprehensive set of hydrologic and 1D/2D coupled hydraulic model. The Bear Creek watershed, located in North Texas, has experienced rapid urbanization and land development in recent years, raising concerns about the potential impacts on hydrological processes and the hydraulic behavior of the river system. To address these concerns, this research utilizes an integrated modeling approach, combining the HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS software tools, to assess changes in flow rates and simulate their effects on river …

Performance Of Percussion Driven Earth Anchors For Riverbank Slope Stabilization: Comprehensive Laboratory And Field Studies, Natnael Tilahun Asfaw
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
ABSTRACT: The unpredictability of the stability of embankment slopes is a recurring problem that threatens the safety of the traveling public, as it compromises the integrity of the structures built on them. Slopes that undergo seasonal variations of stream flow are of particular concern, as they are usually located under a bridge structure that spans a stream, and the meandering of the stream flow, the seasonal variations of the flow depth, and the velocity in the channel induce scouring and increase the risk of the bridge failing. Departments of transportation have long attempted to address these concerns by designing systems …

Use Of Smartphone Apps While Driving: Variations On Driving Performances, Perceived Risks And Behaviors, Juana Perez
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
ABSTRACT: Distracted driving increases the crash frequencies on the road and subsequently leads to fatalities involved with crashes. As technology has evolved, drivers are continuously exposed to newer technology in their vehicles and applications in their phones, which has led to technology representing one of the main secondary tasks that distract drivers on the road. The impact of technology-involved distraction appears to be different by the type of distraction since a secondary task that can be exceedingly distracting to the driver causes more reckless and risky driving. Moreover, the impact of distracted driving may differ by roadway geometries since distracted …
Formal Processes For Inspecting Bridge Deck Drains Using Lidar And Photogrammetry, Ahmad Kamal Bani Hani
Formal Processes For Inspecting Bridge Deck Drains Using Lidar And Photogrammetry, Ahmad Kamal Bani Hani
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
ABSTRACT: Poor-performing bridge deck drains result in water standing on the bridge deck. The standing water threatens the safety of bridge users and deteriorates bridge structural elements. Bridge deck drains are only inspected biennially, and they do not impact the bridge rating established from inspections. Furthermore, literature shows that visual inspection results are sometimes skewed due to human errors. In this regard, a part of this research was conducting a survey study to help identify the problems with deck drains to help transportation agencies minimize the consequences of poor drainage. Another part of this research was to create a convolutional …
Application Of Photogrammetry For Monitoring Soil Surface Movement, Arjan Poudel
Application Of Photogrammetry For Monitoring Soil Surface Movement, Arjan Poudel
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Understanding slope behavior and forecasting failure requires accurate soil surface movement measurements. Research gaps and constraints remain despite the development of diverse methods. Recently, photogrammetry has become a promising method for detecting soil surface movement. This method involves setting coded targets and ground points on the soil surface, taking photographs before and after the movement, and using photogrammetric software to measure accurately. However, past studies have mostly used high-end cameras with excellent resolution and geotagging, which may not have been available in all contexts. Thus, this study compares the accuracy and precision of geotechnical soil surface measurement with a consumer-grade …
Using Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs) In Producing Self-Curing Concrete, Lama Fathi Allan
Using Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs) In Producing Self-Curing Concrete, Lama Fathi Allan
Theses
Curing of concrete is the presence of adequate moisture content in concrete throughout its early stages to produce the desired properties, as it is significant in improving the concrete microstructure and pore structure and hence in developing its performance and durability. However, good curing is not always practical in several cases, such as in hot weather regions and areas of water inadequacy. For that reason, the need to develop self-curing concrete attracted several researchers. The use of self-curing agents minimizes the water evaporation from concrete and consequently increases its water retention capacity compared to conventional concrete. This thesis is concerned …

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of The In-Plane Shear Behavior Of Cantilever Cross-Laminated Timber Diaphragms, Bibek Bhardwaj
All Dissertations
This research focuses on investigating the behavior of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) diaphragms under in-plane shear loads through an experimental, analytical, and numerical approach. Full-scale destructive tests were conducted on cantilever CLT diaphragms to measure their response to cyclic loading. The results showed that the ultimate capacity of the diaphragms was primarily influenced by the fasteners used and exceeded the LRFD capacity. The primary energy dissipation mechanism was through the slip of diaphragm components and rotation of CLT panels due to fastener deformations. The strain data revealed that the diaphragms exhibited deep-beam-like behavior, with resistance to tensile and compressive forces …

Ranking Highway Transportation Asset Criticality Through Stakeholder Input Using The Analytical Hierarchy Process (Ahp), Kwadwo Amankwah-Nkyi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The transportation system is especially vulnerable to natural and human-made disasters which can have effects on mobility, safety, and the economy. This thesis presents a method to rank transportation assets based on their criticality to the transportation system by uniquely gathering stakeholder input on criticality criteria weights. This serves as a typical first step in vulnerability and resilience assessments. Six criteria were used to estimate asset criticality: Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT), roadway classification, freight output, tourism output, Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI), and redundancy. Then, the criteria are combined via stakeholder input using a weighted ranking scheme called the Analytical …

Machine Learning-Based Data And Model Driven Bayesian Uncertanity Quantification Of Inverse Problems For Suspended Non-Structural System, Zhiyuan Qin
All Dissertations
Inverse problems involve extracting the internal structure of a physical system from noisy measurement data. In many fields, the Bayesian inference is used to address the ill-conditioned nature of the inverse problem by incorporating prior information through an initial distribution. In the nonparametric Bayesian framework, surrogate models such as Gaussian Processes or Deep Neural Networks are used as flexible and effective probabilistic modeling tools to overcome the high-dimensional curse and reduce computational costs. In practical systems and computer models, uncertainties can be addressed through parameter calibration, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty quantification, leading to improved reliability and robustness of decision and …

Pyrolysis—A Tool In The Wastewater Solids Handling Portfolio, Not A Silver Bullet: Benefits, Drawbacks, And Future Directions, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Zhongzhe Liu, Yiran Tong, Hari Santha, Lynne Moss, Daniel Zitomer
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Pyrolysis is the process whereby carbonaceous materials, such as biosolids, are heated between 400°C and 900°C in the absence of oxygen. Three main products are generated: a solid product called biochar, a py-liquid that consists of aqueous phase and non-aqueous phase liquid, and py-gas. The biochar holds value as a beneficial soil amendment and sequesters carbon. The py-liquid is potentially hazardous and needs to be dealt with (including potentially reducing it on-site via catalysis or thermal oxidation). Py-gas can be used on-site for energy recovery. Pyrolysis has gained recent interest due to concern over per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in …

The incorporation of cement for soil improvement is a sustainable solution for utilizing marginal materials in the construction of new pavements and the rehabilitation of existing roadway systems. To effectively design and assess the performance of pavement structures, it is crucial to determine the strength and resilient properties of cementitiously stabilized aggregates. Accurate determination of the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), tensile strength, and Resilient Modulus (Mr) is of utmost importance for thoroughly characterizing the structural capacity of pavement layers through a mechanistic approach. The tensile strength of stabilized materials can be assessed in a laboratory setting through the implementation of two …
Optimizing Laboratory Curing Conditions For Hot Mix Asphalt To Simulate Field Behavior, Benjamin Arras
Optimizing Laboratory Curing Conditions For Hot Mix Asphalt To Simulate Field Behavior, Benjamin Arras
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The engineering properties of asphalt mixtures change with time. Shortly after placement, asphalt concrete (AC) layers are more susceptible to rutting. As the pavement ages, the AC layer becomes stiffer, brittle, and thus more susceptible to cracking. Current protocols provide guidelines for the selection of materials, the determination of the material proportions (e.g., aggregates and binder content), and the evaluation of the engineering properties (e.g., cracking and rutting potentials) of any given asphalt mix design. However, these protocols do not consider the impact of aging on the mixture. This study investigated existing and novel laboratory methods to determine protocols that …

An Approach For Verification Of Traffic Speed Deflectometer Measurements, Mahsa Beizaei
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Recent research studies have shown the usefulness and applicability of Traffic Speed Deflectometers (TSD) in support of the network-level pavement management process. There are, however, no accepted procedures for verification and validation of the TSD measurements to be utilized by practitioners. To address this need, TSD measurements may be verified with the data obtained by widely accepted road-testing equipment, Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). In this study, TSD and FWD operations on pavement sections were simulated employing the finite layer approach which resulted in the development of a comprehensive database of pavement responses. Using the established numerical simulation database, theoretical relationships …

A Multiple Model Approach To Bridge Deterioration Modeling, Jin A. Collins
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Bridge Management Systems (BMSs) have been used to support decision-making in bridgeprojects, including maintenance, rehabilitation, and replacement under financial constraints. These decisions are predicated on the ability to estimate bridgesâ?? future condition states to optimize bridge network systems' performance. Deterioration models are commonly used tools to help transportation agencies make predictions of future condition states of infrastructure facilities, schedule capital investments, and make comparative decisions. Numerous deterioration models have been developed over the last few decades. In particular, Markov chain models utilize bridge data collected from the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) database to make predictions. The accuracy of predictions is …
Thermal Behavior Of Plain And Fiber-Reinforced Rigid Concrete Airfield Runways, Arash Karimi Pour
Thermal Behavior Of Plain And Fiber-Reinforced Rigid Concrete Airfield Runways, Arash Karimi Pour
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The environmental condition and temperature gradient are important factors resulting in concrete airfield runways cracking during the time. Rigid concrete airfield runways experience different thermal gradients during the day and night due to changes in air temperature. Curling and thermal expansion stresses are the main consequences resulting in various types of cracking over the surface and thickness of concrete airfield runways and increasing maintenance costs. The curvature of concrete slabs increases with an increase in the temperature gradient which is amplified when runways open to traffic. Additionally, the combination of the curling and shrinkage stresses, in rare circumstances, can be …
Development Of Design Method For Fiber Reinforced Slab On Ground, Abdullah Albogami
Development Of Design Method For Fiber Reinforced Slab On Ground, Abdullah Albogami
Theses and Dissertations
All the present methods of designing the slab-on-ground (SOG) are based on the flexural slab capacity (FSC) to determine the required thickness by calculating the modulus of rupture (MOR) of the concrete beam, depending on ASTM C78 or AASHTO T 97 specifications. All previous experimental results have confirmed that the MOR is much lower than the FSC and it cannot be used to predict FSC accurately. Hence, using the MOR to predict the FSC would lead to the underestimation of FSC and require more unnecessary thickness. Therefore, this study aims to develop accurate equation for estimating the FSC based on …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Interest in sustainable practices have increased in several industries, including civil engineering pavement materials. The incorporation of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) into new pavement mix design is a popular method of application for sustainable practice and is accompanied by numerous economic and environmental benefits. There is significant interest in using large amounts of this RAP material in pavement design to maximize the benefits, but several problems arise when utilizing “high” amounts of this material (more than 25% RAP replacement) due to aged and oxidized binder that negatively impacts the properties. The use of rejuvenators (RAs) and Balanced Mix Design (BMD) …
Understanding The Bond Strength Of Bcsa Cement Repair Concrete To Portland Cement Concrete, Brenden Simmons

Concrete structures deteriorate over time, and there is an increasing demand for quick repair solutions. Belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cement, a type of rapid setting cement, is thought to be a more sustainable and convenient alternative to portland cement in repair concrete applications. Indicated by the name, rapid setting concrete can set up quicker than traditional portland cement concrete. Because of this, there has been a lot of research about the properties of rapid setting concrete mixes. One of the most popular topics is the strength of the concrete itself. However, there is a need for more research to understand …
Impacts Of Diagonal Crosswalk Misuse, Elizabeth Francis
Impacts Of Diagonal Crosswalk Misuse, Elizabeth Francis
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
A diagonal crosswalk paired with an all-red phase traffic signal is an effective approach to manage intersections with high pedestrian volume. This allows pedestrians to cross both north-south and east-west bound roads at the same time. However, ineffective diagonal crosswalk marking, and lack of signs reduces the use of diagonal crosswalks which in turn results in jaywalking, often in unsafe capacities. The objective of this study is to determine the impacts of pedestrian-caused delay and safety impacts due to the misuse of a diagonal crosswalk. To better understand the impacts, a camera-based data collection was conducted during a four-hour period …
Development Of A Unified Personal And Commercial Residential Hurricane Vulnerability Model Including Sensitivity And Uncertainty Studies, Roberto Vicente Silva De Abreu
Development Of A Unified Personal And Commercial Residential Hurricane Vulnerability Model Including Sensitivity And Uncertainty Studies, Roberto Vicente Silva De Abreu
Theses and Dissertations
As the population and properties in the state of Florida increase, there is an increase in hurricane losses. Hurricane winds and debris can impact the exterior components of a building envelope. The envelope breaches and defects of these components provide a pathway to hurricane wind-driven rain into the building, which causes interior and contents damage. Loss models, such as the Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model (FPHLM), estimate hurricane insured losses for portfolios of buildings. The vulnerability component of the FPHLM has a personal residential module (PR), for single family homes, and a commercial residential module (CR-LR), for apartment buildings. They …

Rattus Norvegicus As A Biological Detector Of Clandestine Remains And The Use Of Ultrasonic Vocalizations As A Locating Mechanism, Gabrielle M. Johnston
Master's Theses
In investigations, locating missing persons and clandestine remains are imperative. One way that first responder and police agencies can search for the remains is by using cadaver dogs as biological detectors. Cadaver dogs are typically used due to their olfactory sensitivity and ability to detect low concentrations of volatile organic compounds produced by biological remains. Cadaver dogs are typically chosen for their stamina, agility, and olfactory sensitivity. However, what is not taken into account often is the size of the animal and the expense of maintaining and training the animal. Cadaver dogs are typically large breeds that cannot fit in …
Force Coefficients And Wind Loads For Wide Flange Section And Retrofitted Pipe Racks, Sovanroth Ou
Force Coefficients And Wind Loads For Wide Flange Section And Retrofitted Pipe Racks, Sovanroth Ou
All Theses
While relatively rare, the failures of steel structures occasionally occur due to extreme wind events such as hurricanes and tornadoes. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) provides well-defined guidelines for determining wind loads for regular buildings; nonetheless, the actual wind loads for complex open-frame steel structures are not as clearly understood by practicing engineers. Pipe bridges and pipe racks are open-frame structures, commonly used in many petrochemical plants. Over the years, additional pipes are often added to existing pipe racks or pipe bridges to accommodate changes in the operation needs of the petrochemical plant. The objectives of this study …

Reducing Infiltration And Inflow In Small Collection Systems: Environmental, Economic, And Other Impacts, Andrew Hansen
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs) and the collection systems (CSs) which feed them provide essential services to society by collecting sewage (aka wastewater), biologically treating it, and minimizing risks to human health as well as the impact of waste on the environment. However, as collection systems age, increasing infiltration and inflow (I/I) from groundwater and stormwater can negatively affect the system. I/I is often mitigated to reduce flow and eliminate other negative impacts to the system.
Ten total case studies, seven mechanical water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) and three lagoon facilities, were examined for the environmental, economic, and other impacts/benefits from …
Sustainable Revitalization Of Asphalt Pavements: An In-Depth Analysis Of Enhancing The Performance Of Asphalt Binder Through The Application Of Rheological And Molecular Dynamics Simulation Techniques, Muhammad Ahmad
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Vegetable-based oils such as corn and soybean oil have triglycerides and fatty acids that allow them to be considered sustainable and effective recycling agents (RAs) for aged asphalt binder. However, there are concerns about their effect on the recycled asphalt binder's long-term performance, moisture damage resistance, and self-healing characteristics restoration. In this study, crude corn oil (CO) and crude soybean oil (SO) were used as RAs to restore the performance of a reclaimed asphalt binder (RAB) extracted from reclaimed asphalt pavement. The binder extracted from RAB was modified with a neat binder PG64-28 and RAs to restore the high-end performance …
