"This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of varying amounts of clay (illite) on the compressibility of a silt as it may be found in nature in a normally consolidated deposition. Laboratory procedure was designed to minimize sample disturbance so as to obtain, as nearly as possible, a virgin consolidation curve. By varying the amounts of silt and clay in a given sample, and sedimenting the sample from a soil-water suspension, consolidation test analyses were used for a comparison of the various samples. "The purpose of this study was to determine whether proportional damping could be used to satisfactorily simulate the more practical nonproportional damping condition in multistory shear buildings. To accomplish this one computer program was written to analyze proportionally damped systems and another to analyze nonproportionally damped systems, each giving as output the frequencies, mode shapes, displacements, shears and moments and the maximum shears and moments. Shear buildings of two, three and four stories were studied in which the damping coefficients were varied from one to ten percent of critical damping. "Fundamental aspects of thixotropic phenomena are described, and previous investigations of thixotropic behavior in soil systems are summarized. The complex nature of the thixotropic phenomena as well as its general occurrence in fine grained soils is described. As existing hypothesis for thixotropic behavior based on initial non-equilibrium conditions is examined. Experimental results, as determined from a testing program on the Putnam clay, verify this hypothesis. The rate and magnitude of thixotropic strength increases of the Putnam clay were determined. A pile load test program was conducted at Newark Airport to determine the most economical piles to be utilized to support the structure in the Redevelopment of Newark Airport. The controlling criteria were the pre-determined design capacity of 50 to 100 tons for the piles and conformance to the Newark Building Code regarding the maximum allowable loads on the Airport's bearing strata and the allowable settlements for test loaded piles. Thirty-four piles, ten timber, four steel H-piles, four pre-stressed concrete, seven cobi shell and nine steel pipe piles, were driven to determine driving characteristics of the piles and the reaction …

The basic hydrologic data required to determine the water yield are usually unavailable for small basins and streams while increasing emphasis is being placed on their development. Therefore, some methods and techniques for estimating the amount of water available for development of these small units is needed .

"A general equilibrium-stiffness method of matrix structural analysis was adapted and applied to the solution of the member end forces and moments of each of the members in a curvilinear structural grid system. A structural system of this nature is commonly used as the supporting framework for a "steel-framed dome", in addition to being a basic structural component in many aerospace applications. "This study has been conducted to determine the applicability of the Terzaghi Theory of Consolidation and to determine the compressibility of silt soils with varying clay content. A pure silt was extracted from the Lebanon Silt Loam and mixed with varying amounts of the Onyx Cave Illite-Chlorite Clay. The compressibility of these mixtures was determined and an attempt made to apply the Terzaghi Theory in the analysis. It was found that the compressibility of soils high in silt content is very low. It was also found that the Terzaghi Theory may be applied to mixtures of 15 percent or more …

"This thesis describes the effects of several methods of introducing wire fibres into a concrete mix upon the uniformity of wire fibre reinforced concrete. Various mechanical and manual methods of introducing the fibres were used and comparisons of the methods were based upon variability in splitting tensile strength and the quantitative distribution of the fibres as determined by visual inspection of sawed cylinders. Test results show that the tensile strength of concrete is increased appreciably by the inclusion of steel wire fibres in the mix and the uniformity of strength is similar to that of unreinforced concrete.
