Elucidation Of The Catalytic Partial Oxidation Of Methane Utilizing The One-Of-A-Kind Catalytic Shock Tube Technique, Robyn E. Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism for the catalytic partial oxidation of methane has been debated in scientific literature for over 20 years. This is a seemingly simple reaction producing CO, CO2, H2 and H2O through either partial oxidation followed by complete oxidation or complete oxidation followed by reforming steps. What is happening when the reaction is allowed to occur in an environment absent of transport limitations, absent of temperature gradients and temperature changes, absent of boundary layers must be understood and, until now, has yet to be achieved in one experimental technique.

A novel method using a one …

Air Ingress And Heat-Driven Flow Relaminarization In A Very High Temperature Reactor (Vhtr), Apoorva Rudra

Dissertations and Theses

Very High Temperature Reactors (VHTRs) are one of six Generation IV reactors that have been proposed for DOE’s Next Generation Nuclear Plant. In addition to using gaseous coolants, VHTRs also display benefits of passive safety systems including intra-core natural circulation for heat removal in accident scenarios. However, a number of substantial engineering challenges are expected in VHTRs, and due to the high temperatures of the coolant involved, material behavior in various components needs to be better understood. Our work focuses mainly on two key phenomena that could lead to localized hot spots in the VHTR reactor core if not addressed …

Investigation Of The Synthesis And Optoelectronic Properties Of Ultrasmall Cdse Quantum Dots, Megan Webster Jan 2019

Investigation Of The Synthesis And Optoelectronic Properties Of Ultrasmall Cdse Quantum Dots, Megan Webster

Dissertations and Theses

Traditional, or 1st generation, solar cells have a theoretical upper limit of 33% power conversion efficiency based on the thermodynamic limitation of the single p-n junction cell design. This limitation is known as the Shockley-Queisser limit and methods to design solar cells to circumvent it have been creative, with a significant part of the field focused on quantum dot (QD) based systems. With theoretical efficiencies ranging between 44 and 67% for one sun concentration, QD solar cell designs are clearly superior to the limits of 1st generation solar cells. However, maximum achieved efficiencies for QD-based designs are far …

Electrochemical Properties Of Crystalline Polymorphs Of Mno2 In Aluminum And Zinc Metal Batteries, Subhadip Pal

Dissertations and Theses

The widespread use of non-renewable fossil fuels has led to societal problems like global warming and climate change. Electrochemical energy storage can enable the integration of renewable energy sources that are inherently intermittent (solar, wind, etc.) into the electric grid, though major advances in cost, cycle life, and safety are necessary to have a global impact on the energy landscape. Both aluminium (Al) and zinc (Zn) metals are earth abundant, low-cost, safe, and exhibit high coulombic capacities, which make them promising electrode materials for “beyond lithium-ion” battery chemistries. However, the electrochemical feasibility and charge storage mechanisms of alternative Al and …

Microfluidic Study Of Gravity-Driven Drainage And Coalescence Of Aqueous Two Dimensional Foams, Justin D. Heftel Jan 2019

Microfluidic Study Of Gravity-Driven Drainage And Coalescence Of Aqueous Two Dimensional Foams, Justin D. Heftel

Dissertations and Theses

Foams, a two-phase dispersion, are staples of the cosmetic, personal care, petroleum, pharmaceutical, and other industries. Central to these applications is the stability of the dispersion against separation. Foams break down by two mechanisms: the first is bubble coalescence, which is driven by the gravity drainage of the continuous phase. The drainage acts to push the bubbles against each other, and leads to the formation of thin lamellae, which break and cause the coalescence. The second is the mass transfer of the dispersed phase through the continuous phase, which is caused by the difference in pressures between the bubbles and …

Intensification Of Gas Absorption In A Downward Flow Microbubble Bioreactor, Manizheh Ansari Jan 2019

Intensification Of Gas Absorption In A Downward Flow Microbubble Bioreactor, Manizheh Ansari

Dissertations and Theses

Bioreactors are of interest for value-upgrading of stranded or waste industrial gases, such as CO, CH4, or syngas. Process economics requires reduction of reactor cost and size while maintaining high production rate via rapid delivery of gas feedstock to the liquid phase which in turn requires a high volumetric mass transfer rate (). One strategy to achieve this goal is to increase interfacial area density, a, to >3000 m2 m-3, while minimizing use of energy. Here we show a novel reactor column design that uses a micro-jet array to break feedstock at ambient pressure …

Designing Particle Tracking Software For A Theoretical Understanding Of Magnetic Janus Particle Aggregation, Thomas W. Long Jan 2019

Designing Particle Tracking Software For A Theoretical Understanding Of Magnetic Janus Particle Aggregation, Thomas W. Long

Dissertations and Theses

Magnetic Janus particles are spherical colloids covered with a thin magnetic cap on one half of their surface. The asymmetric magnetic material gives the particles a magnetic dipole shifted away from the center of mass of the particle. The magnetic dipole either points perpendicular (axially-shifted FexOy caps) or parallel (radially-shifted (Co/Pd)x multilayered particles) to the shift vector. When a magnetic field is applied to a system of magnetic Janus particles, the particles aggregate into chains aligned with the magnetic field. The rate of aggregation is of theoretical and practical interest and the focus of the thesis.

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Noncovalent hybrids of single-stranded DNA and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have demonstrated applications in biomedical imaging and sensing due to their enhanced biocompatibility and photostable, environmentally responsive near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence. The fundamental properties of such DNA-SWCNTs have been studied to determine the correlative relationships between oligonucleotide sequence and length, SWCNT species, and the physical attributes of the resultant hybrids. However, intracellular environments introduce harsh conditions that can change the physical identities of the hybrid nanomaterials, thus altering their intrinsic optical properties. Here, through visible and NIR fluorescence imaging in addition to confocal Raman microscopy, we show that the oligonucleotide length …

Ultrasonic Generation Of Pulsatile And Sequential Therapeutic Delivery Profiles From Calcium-Crosslinked Alginate Hydrogels, Tania Emi, Kendra Michaud, Emma Orton, Grace Santilli, Catherine Linh, Meaghan O'Connell, Fatima Issa, Stephen Kennedy

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Control over of biological processes can potentially be therapeutically regulated through localized biomolecular deliveries. While implantable hydrogels can provide localized therapeutic deliveries, they do not traditionally provide the temporally complex therapeutic delivery profiles required to regulate complex biological processes. Ionically crosslinked alginate hydrogels have been shown to release encapsulated payloads in response to a remotely applied ultrasonic stimulus, thus potentially enabling more temporally complex therapeutic delivery profiles. However, thorough characterizations of how different types of therapeutic payloads are retained and ultrasonically released need to be performed. Additionally, the impact of potentially disruptive ultrasonic stimulations on hydrogel structure and temperature need …

Development Of Novel Temperature Responsive Polymeric Sorbents And Their Applications In Water Remediation, Shuo Tang

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Water remediation utilizing sorption has found strong interest due to its inexpensiveness, universal nature and ease of operation. In particular, thermo-responsive sorbents consisting of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) offer significant potential as “smart” and advanced materials to remove multiple aqueous pollutants. NIPAAm exhibits excellent thermo-responsiveness, which senses the external temperature variation and changes its swelling and sorption behaviors in a sharp and rapid manner. At the beginning of this work, an extensive review of literature has been compiled to provide a summary of NIPAAm-based thermo-responsive sorbents in water/wastewater remediation applications.

Initially, we developed a novel approach to synthesize and characterize NIPAAm copolymeric …

Impact Of Conformational Change, Solvation Environment, And Post-Translational Modification On Desulfurization Enzyme 2'-Hydroxybiphenyl-2-Sulfinate Desulfinase (Dszb) Stability And Activity, Landon C. Mills Jan 2019

Impact Of Conformational Change, Solvation Environment, And Post-Translational Modification On Desulfurization Enzyme 2'-Hydroxybiphenyl-2-Sulfinate Desulfinase (Dszb) Stability And Activity, Landon C. Mills

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Naturally occurring enzymatic pathways enable highly specific, rapid thiophenic sulfur cleavage occurring at ambient temperature and pressure, which may be harnessed for the desulfurization of petroleum-based fuel. One pathway found in bacteria is a four-step catabolic pathway (the 4S pathway) converting dibenzothiophene (DBT), a common crude oil contaminant, into 2-hydroxybiphenyl (HBP) without disrupting the carbon-carbon bonds. 2’-Hydroxybiphenyl-2-sulfinate desulfinase (DszB), the rate-limiting enzyme in the enzyme cascade, is capable of selectively cleaving carbon-sulfur bonds. Accordingly, understanding the molecular mechanisms of DszB activity may enable development of the cascade as industrial biotechnology. Based on crystallographic evidence, we hypothesized that DszB …

Targeted Illumination Strategies For Hydrogen Production From Purple Non-Sulfur Bacteria, John D. Craven Jan 2019

Targeted Illumination Strategies For Hydrogen Production From Purple Non-Sulfur Bacteria, John D. Craven

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

The movement towards a more sustainable energy economy may require not only the generation of cleaner fuel sources, but the conversion of waste streams into value-added products. Phototrophic purple non-sulfur bacteria are capable of metabolizing VFAs (volatile fatty acids)and generate hydrogen as a byproduct of nitrogen fixation using energy absorbed from light. VFAs are easily produced from dark anaerobic fermentation of food, agricultural, and municipal wastes, which could then be fed into photobioreactors of purple bacteria for hydrogen production.

The process of photofermentation by purple bacteria for hydrogen production remains attractive due to the capability of reaching high substrate conversions …
