Modeling Of Electrochemical Processes At The Magnesium Anode During Struvite Formation, Tobias Dwyer May 2019

Modeling Of Electrochemical Processes At The Magnesium Anode During Struvite Formation, Tobias Dwyer

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study analyzes the current transients observed during the electrochemical formation of struvite from a solution of ammonium phosphate using a pure magnesium and magnesium alloy electrode. Through converting the chronoamperometric data to chronocoulometric data and fitting the data to various models, the driving mechanisms for struvite nucleation were elucidated. While the pure magnesium anode is controlled by only instantaneous nucleation at the electrode, the AZ31 alloy is nucleation controlled at short times and Cottrell diffusion controlled at long times.

Capture And Release Gels For Optimized Storage (Cargos), Theodore S. Kalbfleisch Ii May 2019

Capture And Release Gels For Optimized Storage (Cargos), Theodore S. Kalbfleisch Ii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unassisted, the lifetime of many proteins outside their natural environment is very short. Scientists generally need to extract the sample, often in remote locations, and then transport, isolate, and store such biospecimens relatively far from the point of origin in order to study them. Currently, the most commonly used methods for storage of biospecimens are cryopreservation or refrigeration which, though effective, have their fair share of flaws. Cryopreservation and refrigeration-based storage of biospecimens requires a great deal of space and other resources to be effective. Furthermore, the hardware required for cold storage does not transport well. These factors make such …

Numerical Study Of Spacer Grid Geometry In A 5 X 5 Nuclear Fuel Rod Bundle, Wan Chuan Fan May 2019

Numerical Study Of Spacer Grid Geometry In A 5 X 5 Nuclear Fuel Rod Bundle, Wan Chuan Fan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Reactor fuel rod bundles serve as the primary heat source in light water reactors (LWRs), commonly found in the aforementioned PWR plants. The fuel rod bundles’ structure consists of a collection of fuel rods put into a parallel grid configuration. The bundles also include fuel rod spacers, which hold the fuel rods in place, in accordance with the grid. Repeating structures of the fuel bundles create the meta-structure in the reactor. In other words, the grid configuration repeats until it fills the entire space of the reactor. This results in reactor fuel rods suspended in the working fluid domain, oriented …

Validation Of An External Bioreactor Filtration Loop Prototype For A Tissue Engineering Test Bed, Jonah Martin Melegrito May 2019

Validation Of An External Bioreactor Filtration Loop Prototype For A Tissue Engineering Test Bed, Jonah Martin Melegrito

Theses and Dissertations

As a cell line thrives within a culture, some of the cells undergo the natural process of death. Whether it is due to apoptotic or necrotic causes, cell death is a significant hurdle for tissue engineering and cell cultivation. When cells attached to a scaffold die, they slough off from the scaffold into the bloodstream. If left unchecked, these dead cells and any cellular waste products accumulate and could affect the living cells’ ability to survive. The objective of this thesis was to construct a separation system that can filter away any unwanted suspended solids while allowing nutrients to recycle …

Residence Time Distribution (Rtd) Analysis Of A Bioreactor's External Recirculation Loop For A Tissue Engineering Test Bed, Adrien Hosking May 2019

Residence Time Distribution (Rtd) Analysis Of A Bioreactor's External Recirculation Loop For A Tissue Engineering Test Bed, Adrien Hosking

Theses and Dissertations

Currently, in tissue engineering, the focus is on morphing cells into a particular type of tissue by hand, rather than automating the process. Automating cell feeding and waste removal, alone, still requires the removal of cells from their culture to perform imaging and analysis. Without the ability to automate the imaging in a way that does not risk cell death, the advantages of automating the feeding and waste removal are largely lost. By building a fully automated tissue engineering test bed, the capacity for cell reproducibility and cell yield increases significantly. This thesis outlines the design, some initial testing, and …

Removal And Reuse Of Phosphorus As A Fertilizer From Cafo Runoff, Hannah Young May 2019

Removal And Reuse Of Phosphorus As A Fertilizer From Cafo Runoff, Hannah Young

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Eutrophication is the process in which nutrient saturated waters promote algal blooms on the surface of the water. This limits the amount of dissolved oxygen content in the water, effectively limiting the range of species that can survive in a body of water. Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) can contribute to this issue. The animals in a CAFO produce large amounts of nutrient-rich waste streams that can enter natural waterways if not properly managed and increase the problem of eutrophication. The ability to treat these waste streams and recover the excess nutrients would allow for not only the reduction of …

This work will provide some insight into how thiol ligands can increase the selectivity of the catalyst for nitrogen reduction reaction and can be …

Effects Of Ambient And Laser Light On Water Evaporation From The Surface Of Polyurethane Swabs Doped With Surfactant, Collin Campbell May 2019

Effects Of Ambient And Laser Light On Water Evaporation From The Surface Of Polyurethane Swabs Doped With Surfactant, Collin Campbell

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Polyurethane swabs are a common instrument for environmental sampling in the food, medical, and forensic fields due to their high recovery of organisms like viruses, spores, and bacteria. For sampling microbes in food and medical facilities, storage of the collected samples occurs under the absence of light to promote growth for more accurate testing. In the forensic fields, microbial growth results in sample contamination so the inhibition of this growth requires the drying of the swabs. This work studies the evaporation rates of water from polyurethane swabs under zero watt incident light, 30 W fluorescent bulb, 50 mW 532 nm …

Surface Immobilization Of Terpyridine Compounds, Elizabeth Hallett

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The deoxydehydration (DODH) of polyols to alkenes is a promising method of producing high-value chemical feedstocks from biomass-derived materials. Current catalytic systems for DODH require the use of costly reducing agents that generate stoichiometric amounts of chemical waste. Immobilizing catalysts on electrode surfaces using chemical linking groups eliminates the need for sacrificial reductants. In this work, glassy carbon electrodes were modified with 4’-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2,2’:6’,2’’-terpyridine to investigate o-benzoquinone as a potential linking group for DODH, and possibly for other reactions. Previous studies involving electrodes modified with quinone-containing compounds have primarily been focused on catalyzing the oxidation of NADH; the nature or …

Publications and Research

The human telomeric G-quadruplex (G4) is an attractive target for developing anticancer drugs. Natural products protoberberine alkaloids are known to bind human telomeric G4 and inhibit telomerase. Among several structurally similar protoberberine alkaloids, epiberberine (EPI) shows the greatest specificity in recognizing the human telomeric G4 over duplex DNA and other G4s. Recently, NMR study revealed that EPI recognizes specifically the hybrid-2 form human telomeric G4 by inducing large rearrangements in the 50-flanking segment and loop regions to form a highly extensive four-layered binding pocket. Using the NMR structure of the EPI-human telomeric G4 complex, here we perform molecular dynamics free …

Iron-Containing Nanoparticles For The Treatment Of Chrionic Biofilm Infections In Cystic Fibrosis, Leisha M. A. Martin Apr 2019

Iron-Containing Nanoparticles For The Treatment Of Chrionic Biofilm Infections In Cystic Fibrosis, Leisha M. A. Martin

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common genetic disease resulting in the morbidity and mortality of Caucasian children and adults worldwide. Due to a genetic mutation resulting in malfunction of the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) protein, CF patients produce highly viscous mucus in their respiratory tract. This leads to impairment of the mucociliary clearance of inhaled microbes. In addition to reduced microbial clearance, anoxic environmental conditions in the lungs promote biofilm-mode growth of the pathogenic bacterial species Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Chronic infections of P. aeruginosa begin in early childhood and typically persist until respiratory failure and death result. The …
