A study of the mass transfer phenomena in fractional distillation was made. Small scale single slot, single cap apparatus was used to obtain the necessary experimental data.

The mass transfer coefficient KgA was calculated using several combinations of liquid and vapor compositions in the menthanol - water system under static liquid conditions. The correlation showed that KgA held about constant over the entire range of concentrations.

The problem of bubble area was studied and reasonable estimations of area, bubble frequency, and time of rise were made. This information is to be incorporated into the calculation of the mass transfer coefficient …

The purpose of this investigation was to determine quantitatively the effect of pigmentation on the film properties of ethocel lacquer. This study was confined to the determination of tensile strength, percentage elongation at failure, softening and melting points of the films. Pigments were ground in the ethocel lacquer containing three parts ethocel, one part 276V-9 Dow resin and sixteen parts solvent by weight. Softening and melting points of the films were determined and were found to increase uniformly with increasing amounts of the pigments. Relative Volatility Of Esters In Ethyl Alcohol-Water-Ester System., Yi-Chung Chang

The relative volatillities of five branch-chained esters with respect to ethyl alcohol in mixtures of ethyl alcohol and water containing small amounts of esters were determined experimentally. The results could be used in the design of distillation columns for ethyl alcohol purification.

For alcohol concentrations of more than 50 mol per cent, the increase of relative volatility of the esters was inversely proportional to the alcohol concentration. For dilute concentrations of less than 30 mol per cent the increase in volatility was very rapid, and the rates of increase were different for different esters. No simple quantitative correlation was established …

"A considerable amount of work has been done on the use of gelatin as a stabilizer or as a protective colloid in emulsions, or in other colloidal systems. However, relatively little research has been published using gelatin solely as an emulsifying agent. With this in mind it was decided to investigate the emulsifying properties of iso-electric gelatin with water - oil systems. The term oil, as used, refers to any liquid immiscible with water. This thesis is primarily a study of two-step plywood adhesives made with varying amounts of phenol, 1, 3, 5 xylenol, resorcin, and formaldehyde. Each resin was evaluated by using it as the adhesive in making plywood. The plywood was then tested for shear strength and wood failure after a four hour boil.

Procedures are given for making and testing various straight phenolic resins and resins modified with 1, 3, 5 xylenol or resorcin, or comibinations of both of these accelerating resins.

Simultaneous drying of curing superphospate is shown to be of definite value in increasing the available P2O5 content. Raw superphosphate heated to 80 degrees C., and analysed after 1 hour, 4 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours of curing contained 16.92%, 19.67%, 20.66%, and 20.78% of available P2O5 respectively. For the same periods of time samples cured at room temperature contained 15.28%, 17.1%, 17.7%, and 18.82% of available P2O5. There was a larger amount of P2O5 available after 4 hours heating than after 48 hours at room temperature. This increase represented a 12:1 time-ratio in favor of the heated sample. …

The burning of limestone with natural gas produces a relatively clean gas in which the carbon dioxide content may exceed 40 per cent. It is with this type gas that the present thesis will be concerned. In this process the burning of the limestone is accomplished by using natural gas as a fuel, burning usually under a pressure of about two pounds, and obtaining carbon dioxide from the combustion of the gas and the decomposition of the limestone. "The freezing points of the system methanol-glycol-water were investigated by Conrad, Hill and Ballman to determine the suitability of such mixtures for use as an antifreeze. The low freezing points obtained seem to warrant further investigation of other properties of the system. Especially important would be the vapor-liquid equilibrium relations of the system, since one of the desirable features of such a mixture would be low vapor pressures. This thesis presents the results of an investigation conducted to improve the weather resistance of plywood assemblies used in prefabricated housing manufacture. Specifically, this work involved water sealers for edge joints (called edge sealers), the prevention of surface transfer of water vapor through plywood (called vapor barriers), and fillers for structural defects in the wood (called core void fillers). Two edge sealers for plywood were developed that were considered successful in resisting water permeation. One was a quick drying paint formulated by the addition of 30 per cent leaded zinc oxide to 70 per cent Arco primer paint No. 156. …

This thesis is a report on coatings exclusive of the porcelain enamels which may be used at temperatures as high as 750*F., and also a description of the properties of the more heat resistant resins of commerce. The method of preparation and testing of the various coatings investigated in this research is given, and the results are tabulated and discussed. Best results were obtained with Dow Corning silicones of the 800 series heavily pigmented with either zinc dust or aluminum bronze, and with glycerol phthalate -- silicone coatings pigmented with aluminum bronze.

This thesis is a report of an investigation for a substitute for wood veneer to be used as face material for wire-bound boxes. The fiberboard substitute was made using a heavy paper backing with a wood waste mixture of chips and sawdust with various types of adhesive binders. The following adhesives were used singly and in mixtures: Starch, sodium silicate, asphalt emulsion, animal glue, urea resin with a wheat flour extender, rosin, and casein. The composition and test results of the fiberboard panels made in the laboratory are reported.

The study of the crystal structure of metals under various conditions of strain is at the present time the object of a great deal of scientific endeavor. A greater knowledge of the condition of strained crystals will be a tremendous aid in the future development of metallic construction for one can then predict the effect of any type of strain on a metal by the reaction of the individual crystals to that particular strain. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the construction and use of the Barrett camera which is used in experiments of this kind.
