Lignocellulosic And Cellulosic Beads For Affinity And Immunoaffinity Chromatography Of High Molecular Weight Protiens, William H. Velander
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents
Improved cellulosic beads for use as supports in bioaffinity chromatography are produced by dissolution of cellulose in a chaotropic cellulose solvent, formation of the dissolved cellulose into droplets, and immersion of the droplets into a non-solvent capable of solvent interchange with the cellulose solvent to form generally spherical porous cellulose beads of narrow particle size distribution. The beads formed are preferably made with cellulose having a degree of polymerization between 100 and 200, and the resulting beads when saturated with water without drying contain between 1% and 7% cellulose by weight and have a particle size of at least about …

An Alternative Method Of Interfacing A Dc Motor To A Microprocessor For Mo- Tion Control, M Selekwa
An Alternative Method Of Interfacing A Dc Motor To A Microprocessor For Mo- Tion Control, M Selekwa
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
A Simple and cheap alternative method Of interfacing a permanent mag- net dc motor to a motion control using switch- ing transistor motor drivers is presented. This method involves the use Of very few transistor-transistor logic (TTL) devices and a 555 timer to pro- duce a pulse width modulated (P WM) signal which is required by the mo- ror driver. The motor driver in this case should be of an H-bridge type. Like other methods currently in use, it relieves the MPU of all timing func- tions which are necessary in the generation of P WM signals. The present method, …

Oxidation Of Pollutants In A Batch Recirculation Bioreactor With Immobilized Microorganisms, Jongtai Jung
Dissertations
The purpose of this work was to study bio-oxidative destruction of several substrates in an immobilized cell batch bioreactor in recirculation configuration. This system was used in three cases: a series of substrates usually used as monomers, ethylene glycol and its tetramer, and phenol under magnetic irradiation. In addition, kinetic studies were performed and experimental versus predicted results compared.
The substances styrene, methyl methacrylate (MMA), and β-hydroxybutyric acid (HBA), common monomers, were biologically treated using an acclimated mixed microbial community immobilized in calcium alginate gel. A comparison of biodegradation rates (3.3, 9.4, and 15 ppm/hr for styrene, MMA, and HBA, …

Removal Of Vapors From Air By Selective Membrane Processes, Junseok Cha
Dissertations
The behaviors of different membrane modules for the selective removal and recovery of water vapor and some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from N2 have been studied. For the selective permeation-based removal of water vapor from N2, a polymeric water-swollen gel membrane in the form of Cuprophan hollow fiber was employed. A thin film composite type rubbery membrane module was studied for the selective removal of VOCs like toluene or methanol from N2 by permeation. The usefulness of pore-condensation phenomenon-based removal of toluene or xylene from N2 was explored using a microporous ceramic tubular membrane.

Engineering Analysis Of A Packed-Bed Biofilter For Removal Of Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Emissions, Zarook M. Shareefdeen
Dissertations
This study dealt with removal of VOC emissions from airstreams using an evolving new technology which is known as biofiltration. The basis of this technology is biodegradation of VOCs in biofilms formed around porous solids which are placed in packed-bed reactors.
A detailed model describing steady state biofiltration of single and mixed VOCs was developed, and experimentally validated. The model takes into account biodegradation kinetics, the effect of oxygen, kinetic interactions among structurally similar compounds, and mass transfer from the gas phase to the biolayer. It was found that oxygen (a factor neglected in all previous studies) plays a very …
Biological Denitrification : Fundamental Kinetic Studies, And Process Analysis For Sequencing Batch Reactor Operation, Jun-Hsien Wang
Biological Denitrification : Fundamental Kinetic Studies, And Process Analysis For Sequencing Batch Reactor Operation, Jun-Hsien Wang
Dissertations
This study dealt with a detailed investigation of biological denitrification of nitrate and nitrite by a pure culture of Pseudomonas denitrificans (ATCC 13867), under anaerobic conditions.
In the first part of the study, the kinetics of denitrification were studied in serum-bottle experiments. It was found that reduction of both nitrate and nitrite follows inhibitory expressions of the Andrews type. It was also found that when nitrite is present at levels above 15 mg/L, nitrite and nitrate are involved in a cross-inhibitory, non-competitive, interaction pattern. Analysis of the kinetic data has shown that the culture used has severe maintenance requirements, which …

A Study Of The Biofiltration Process Under Shock-Loading Conditions, Helen Androutsopoulou
Theses
Biofiltration is a new technology for treating airstreams contaminated with emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It employs porous particles which are placed in reactors, in packed-bed configurations, after appropriate microorganisms have been immobilized on the solid support.
Biofiltration involves complex processes, and is not yet well understood. In this thesis the response of biofilter units to quantitative and qualitative changes in the inlet airstreams was examined. Steady state data were also analyzed through the use of an existing detailed model.
Experiments were performed with two small-scale biofilters, and with ethanol and butanol as model compounds. Each biofilter was dedicated …

Electroless Metal Adhesion To Organic Dielectric Material With Phase Separated Morphology, Ravi F. Saraf
Electroless Metal Adhesion To Organic Dielectric Material With Phase Separated Morphology, Ravi F. Saraf
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents
Improved adhesion of electroless metal deposited on an organic dielectric layer with phase separated morphology is accomplished by the spontaneous formation of a morphologically and topographically rough surface. In one embodiment a ternary solution of a polar solvent and two polymer precursors of the same polymer which are separable in two phases of different order are cast in film on a substrate and heated to form two phases of different order to spontaneously produce a rough surface. Upon exposure to an alkaline solution, one phase is etched at a faster rate than the other. Seeding and electroless deposition of a …
The Affects Of Butyl Acetate And Acetone On Plexiglass, Tracy E. Downs
The Affects Of Butyl Acetate And Acetone On Plexiglass, Tracy E. Downs
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
The actions that solvents take on polymers was the focus of the summer 1993 research. There were two goals: one was to measure the distances between the cracks that formed in the plexiglass and two was to determine the time of arrival of the cracks. Two solvents, butyl acetate and acetone were used to generate data on polymethyl methacrylate (PMNA/Plexiglass).
The measurement of the time of arrival of a crack was another goal. This quantity is related to the growth of the fractures. This was difficult since only a localized portion of the plexiglass sample could be viewed.
Skin Effects Due To Perforations -- A Study Of Analysis Techniques, Jon Michael Gibbs
Skin Effects Due To Perforations -- A Study Of Analysis Techniques, Jon Michael Gibbs
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
Until 1991, two methods could be used to evaluate the skin effect due to perforations, the Brons and Marting Method and the Harris Method. Due to the simplicity of the technique, the Brons and Marting Method has been the preferred method of use in the petroleum industry. However, with the recent development of a third technique to evaluate the skin effect due to perforations, the need has arisen to evaluate each of these techniques to determine which method is the most accurate under given conditions. This paper reviews and compares each of the three methods for evaluating the perforations skin. …

Forced Convective Diffusion And Interphase Heat And Mass Transfer: Computations Of Radial Functions, Temperature And Concentration Fields, And Presentation Of Local And Average Nusselt And Sherwood Numbers, Stephen Myers, X B. Reed Jr., N. Y. Shah, A. E. Penn
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
Theoretical calculations have been carried out for forced convective transport for uniform streaming and uniaxial and biaxial extensional axisymmetric flows past single spheres. Homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reactions, both of first and of second order have also been or are presently being treated. Orthogonality and other properties of Legendre functions have been used, together with introduction of an eigenfunction expansion, to reduce the mathematical description from a partial differential equation with variable coefficients, which is nonlinear for homogeneous second order chemical reactions, to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations for the radial modes. The numerical solutions of the latter …

Transient Body Force Effects On The Dryout And Rewet Of A Heated Capillary Structure, Michael K. Reagan
Theses and Dissertations
A transient, one-dimensional numerical code was developed to model the liquid flow in a non-uniformly heated, axial square groove. The groove was subjected to transient body forces up to approximately 0.51 m/s2 . Axial variation in meniscus levels, shear stress and heat transfer between the groove wall and the liquid, axial conduction through the liquid, evaporation and body forces were accounted for in the model. Dryout and rewet of the groove were allowed; the front location was determined using conservation of mass and linear extrapolation. A physical experiment was performed with a stainless steel plate into which eight square …

Reaction Kinetics Analyses Of Amine-Cured Epoxies: First Shell Substitution Effects, Hossein Noureddini, C Q. Zhang, Delmar C. Timm
Papers in Reaction Kinetics
Kinetic reaction theory was used to model first shell substitution effects for several amine-cured epoxy resins, subject to the constraint of intermolecular reactions. Moment analysis will allow numerical simulations to be extended beyond the gel point. Functionalities for several chemical moieties were correlated as a function of conversion. Simulations also incorporated population density distribution dynamics. Analyses of several oligomers clearly demonstrated the dependency of oligomeric weight fractions on first shell substitution effects and conversion. The ratio of rate constants for reactions of secondary amino hydrogens relative to reactions of primary amino hydrogens ranged from 0.5 to 1.2 for the resins …

Morphological Composite Materials Formed From Different Precursors, Ravi F. Saraf
Morphological Composite Materials Formed From Different Precursors, Ravi F. Saraf
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents
A method of producing a multiphase polymer is disclosed whereby the phases have the same chemical structure but have different morphological states and thus different properties. This is achieved by forming a mixture of precursors of the polymer, at least one of the precursors having a reaction rate higher than the other precursor or precursors in the mixture. The precursor having the highest reaction rate is then converted to obtain a composite of a polymer and the precursors that are not polymerized. This mixture might also be formed by mixing a soluble polymer with its precursor. The polymer/precursor composite is …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report here the successful incorporation of chemically active Co2+ and Ni2+ centers into plasma polymer thin films. Metal center incorporation was accomplished by simultaneous plasma polymerization of sublimed Co2+ or Ni2+ complexes with gaseous "comonomers" or Ar. The metal complexes include N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediaminecobalt(II) (CoSalophen), N,N′-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediaminecobalt(II) (CoSalen), N,N′-bis(3-fluorosalicylidene)ethylenediaminecobalt(II) (CoFluomine), meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatocobalt(II) (CoTPP), meso-tetraphenylporphine (TPP), and meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatonickel(II) (NiTPP). Modification to the metal complex structure was observed by IR and UV-vis spectroscopies. IR spectra of plasma polymer films containing the Schiff's base complexes, prepared using Ar as a carrier gas, contained a band at 2190 cm−1, which can be attributed to nitrile group formation, …
