Direct Chip Attachment (Dca) With Electrically Conductive Adhesives, Ravi F. Saraf
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents
A simple process for card assembly by Direct Chip Attachment (DCA) uses electrically conductive adhesives. Two methods create the same intermediate wafer product with a layer of insulative thermoplastic and conductive thermoplastic bumps. After sawing or dicing the wafer to form the chips, the chips are adhered to chip carriers with conductive pads which match the conductive thermoplastic bumps, using heat and pressure. Chips may be easily removed and replaced using heat.

Analysis Of Combustion-Driven Acoustics, Leonie Boshoff-Mostert, Hendrik J. Viljoen
Analysis Of Combustion-Driven Acoustics, Leonie Boshoff-Mostert, Hendrik J. Viljoen
Papers in Reaction Kinetics
Combustion-driven acoustic oscillations are investigated by performing a onedimensional stability analysis of a burner-stabilized premixed flame. In contrast to other investigators, no initial acoustic wave is assumed in the analysis; the downstream acoustic field results from flame instability. Two models are considered: the thermodiffusive model (uncoupled model) and the fully coupled thermodiffusive-hydrodynamic model. The fully coupled problem exhibits instability at a much lower critical Lewis number than the uncoupled problem.

Kinetics Of Phase Transition In An Anticlinic Liquid Crystal Induced By A Uniform Temperature Field: Growth In One Dimension, X. Y. Wang, Jian-Feng Li, Eliezer Gurarie, S. Fan, Thein Kyu, S. S. Keast, Charles Rosenblatt
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
It is experimentally demonstrated that a transition from a synclinic to an anticlinic liquid crystal phase occurs via stable domain wall propagation after quenching in a uniform temperature field. Such a one-dimensional growth may be explained in terms of a nonlinear diffusion equation. The experiment provides the first example of free, one-dimensional growth in a system subjected to a pure and uniform temperature field.

The controversial role of electrostatic interactions in the process of steering of acetylcholine into the active site of acetylcholinesterases was investigated in this study. A novel methodology was implemented to simulate the process of recognition of acetylcholine by Torpedo Californica and both wild type and charge neutralized mutated Human AChE. The obtained results suggest the important role of coulombic interactions in the steering process. The steering process of selected irreversible AChE inhibitors was also simulated supporting the role of electrostatic interactions in the recognition process.
A novel methodology was also employed to model the covalent adducts of Torpedo Californica and …

Diffusivities Of N-Alkanes In Silicalite By Steady-State Single-Crystal Membrane Technique, Orhan Talu, Matthew S. Sun, Dhananjai B. Shah
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
A novel experimental technique that measures the diffusive flux through a single-crystal membrane (SCM) was developed and tested. Unlike all other macroscopic techniques that depend on a transient response, SCM is used under steady-state conditions, which results in a wide range of applicability from 10−2 to 10−11 cm2/s. Phenomenological equations for the steady-state data analysis were developed. The variation of driving force over the diffusion path is included in the model. As required by thermodynamics, the micropore concentration is given as a function of surface-excess amount adsorbed and gas density. The membrane configuration measures diffusivity in …

Study On The Synthesis And Electrochemical Behavior Of Poly (Quinonoid-Disulfide), Xiaohui Tang, Xiuwu Sun, Yongfang Li, Shibi Fang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Organic polydisulfide containing quinonoid structure was synthesized by chloromethylation, oxidation by nitric acid, and condensation polymerization with sodium disulfide. The effect of quinonoid structure on the electrochemical behavior of organic polydisulfide was investigated with cyclic voltammetry and chargedischarge measurement. The result shows that quinonoid struture mainly affects the positions of redox peaks of organic polydisulfide, open circuit voltage and discharge platform voltage of cell with the organic polydisulfide as cathode.

Phase Equilibria Of A Nematic And Smectic-A Mixture, Hao-Wen Chiu, Thein Kyu
Phase Equilibria Of A Nematic And Smectic-A Mixture, Hao-Wen Chiu, Thein Kyu
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
A phase diagram of a mixture consisting of nematic and smectic liquid crystals has been calculated self-consistently by combining Flory-Huggins (FH) theory for isotropic mixing and Maier-Saupe-McMillan (MSM) theory for smectic-A ordering. However, the MSM theory can be deduced to the original Maier-Saupe (MS) theory for nematic ordering. To describe the phase transitions involving induced smectic phase and nematic + smectic equilibrium, two nematic and two smectic order parameters for the nematic/smectic mixtures have been coupled through the normalized partition function and the orientation distribution function. Self-consistent numerical solution has been sought in establishing nematic/smectic phase diagrams involving (i) phase …

Frontal Chromatography Of Proteins. Effect Of Axial Dispersion On Column Performance, G. A. Heeter, Athanasios I. Liapis
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A mathematical model describing the dynamic adsorption of proteins in columns packed with spherical porous adsorbent particles is used to study the effect of axial dispersion on the performance of chromatographic systems. The values of the axial dispersion coefficient, D(L), are estimated from a correlation based on a model describing axial dispersion in packed beds that provides satisfactory results when compared with experiment. Simulations of frontal chromatography in systems including axial dispersion and in systems without axial dispersion are made and compared to determine the effect of axial dispersion on the efficiency of the adsorption process; also, the system parameters …

Computer Simulations Of Branched Alkanes: The Effect Of Side Chain And Its Position On Rheological Behavior, Richard L. Rowley, Tapani A. Pakkanen, Maija Lahtela, Mikko Linnolahti
Faculty Publications
Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on model fluids representing eicosane isomers in order to investigate the effect of branching and side chain position on fluid rheology. A heterogeneous, united-atom model with 20 Lennard-Jones interaction sites located at carbon centers was used to model the fluids. Vibrations and bond rotations were frozen, but torsional rotation was included. It was found that viscosity increases significantly from the n-alkane structure to a branch on carbon 2, but the movement of the branch along the carbon backbone has a smaller increasing than decreasing effect. The size of the group in a branched …

A Study Of Piezoelectric Orthorhombic Ta2O5, B. R. Jooste, Hendrik J. Viljoen
A Study Of Piezoelectric Orthorhombic Ta2O5, B. R. Jooste, Hendrik J. Viljoen
Hendrik J. Viljoen Publications
In 1985 it was first reported that monoclinic Ta2O5 has piezoelectric properties comparable to ZnO. In this work we report on the deposition, characterization, and qualitative assessment of the piezoelectric behavior of orthorhombic Ta2O5. Reactive magnetron sputtering was used to deposit thin films of Ta2O5 onto substrates of 316L stainless steel. Without substrate heating the crystallinity was poor. A rapid thermal anneal improved the crystallinity. The orthorhombic phase was dominantly present on all substrates. The piezoelectric property was qualitatively assessed, including a high temperature test at 650 °C.

The performance of a negative carbon ion source was also investigated to use the source in negative ion-beam-assisted deposition. These films were synthesized at room temperature at a constant pressure of 5 mtorr and at 300 Watts R.17 power, but at different composition of nitrogen in Ar-N2 gas mixture ranging from 0-53 percent. The films deposited were microscopically smooth, amorphous and their properties found to be varied with nitrogen composition in plasma. The deposition rate was …
Voc Removal From Nitrogen By A Membrane-Based Combined Absorption-Stripping Process, Boya Xia
Voc Removal From Nitrogen By A Membrane-Based Combined Absorption-Stripping Process, Boya Xia
Theses
A regenerative membrane-based absorption process has been extensively studied to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air/N2 using silicone oil as absorbent. The absorbent liquid is regenerated by applying vacuum in a membrane-based stripper. In this process, there are no flooding, loading and entrainment, which limit the gas/liquid flow rate in the traditional absorption process. In the present study, attention has been focused on the removal of volatile component(s) from binary gas mixtures such as methanol-N2, and toluene-N2, and from a model multicomponent mixture of gasoline vapor constituents and nitrogen. The process performance was tested …
Removal Of Vocs From Superfactant-Flushed Wastewater By Membrane Based Modified Pervaporation Process, Anirban Das
Removal Of Vocs From Superfactant-Flushed Wastewater By Membrane Based Modified Pervaporation Process, Anirban Das
Theses
An aqueous solution of a volatile organic compound (VOC) e.g. trichloroethylene (TCE) is passed through the bores of hydrophobic microporous polypropylene hollow fibers having a plasma polymerized silicone coating on the fiber outside diameter; a vacuum is maintained on the shell side of the fiber to remove the VOC and recover it by condensation. Process performance has been obtained over a range of feed flow rates, concentrations of VOC and the surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)). In solutions without surfactant or low surfactant concentrations, the pores are not wetted and remain gas-filled. The VOC is stripped from the solution into …

Birkman Screening And The Covariance Of The Fluid Velocity Of Fixed Beds, Ashok S. Sangani, Donald L. Koch, Reghan J. Hill
Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship
The phenomenon of Brinkman screening, whereby the fluid velocity disturbance produced by each particle in a fixed bed is attenuated by the forces that the fluid exerts on surrounding particles, plays a crucial role in limiting the range of velocity correlations in porous media and fixed beds. Koch and Brady [J. Fluid Mech. 154, 399 (1985)] showed theoretically that Brinkman screening leads to a finite hydrodynamic diffusion coefficient for fluid phase tracers in dilute fixed beds. In this Letter, we present the results of two simulation techniques (lattice-Boltzmann method and a multipole method) confirming the screening of the fluid velocity …

Dynamic Analysis Of Unidirectional Pressure Infiltration Of Porous Preforms By Pure Metals, Dhiman K. Biswas, Jorge E. Gatica, Surendra N. Tewari
Dynamic Analysis Of Unidirectional Pressure Infiltration Of Porous Preforms By Pure Metals, Dhiman K. Biswas, Jorge E. Gatica, Surendra N. Tewari
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Unidirectional pressure infiltration of porous preforms by molten metals is investigated numerically. A phenomenological model to describe fluid flow and transport phenomena during infiltration of fibrous preforms by a metal is formulated. The model describes the dynamics of the infiltration process, the temperature distribution, and solid fraction distribution. The numerical results are compared against classical asymptotic analyses and experimental results. This comparison shows that end effects may become important and render asymptotic results unreliable for realistic samples. Fiber volume fraction and initial temperature appear as the factors most strongly influencing infiltration. Metal superheating affects not only the length of the …
Improving The Jar Slake, Slake Index, And Slake Durability Tests For Shales, Paul M. Santi
Improving The Jar Slake, Slake Index, And Slake Durability Tests For Shales, Paul M. Santi
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study proposes modifications to three shale durability tests to improve reproducibility, reduce the level of effort required, and better correlate the test to actual slaking characteristics. Modifications to the jar slake test reduced test variability by one-third, offering a substantial improvement in consistency, with only a slight loss in the ability of the test to predict slake durability. Analysis showed that slake index test error could be reduced or at least pinpointed by testing groups of samples, rather than single samples. Furthermore, the wet-sieving procedure should be more carefully defined. Analysis of correlations between single- and multiple-cycle slake durability …

Modeling Partially Premixed Fast Chemical Reactions In Statistically Homogeneous Turbulent Flow Using One-Dimensional Equations Of Change, Yang Gi Kim, X. B. Reed
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A pseudospectral algorithm has been used to compute solutions u(x,t), Ax,t), B(x,t), and R(x,t) to one-dimensional equations of change incorporating the simple reaction A + B → R for statistically homogeneous random velocity and partially premixed reactant concentration fields. An initial turbulence Reynolds number of 400 has been used, together with Damkohler numbers of 102 and 103 for fast reactions and Schmidt numbers of 10-3, 1, and 102 to span a wide range of diffusivities. Evolving concentration profiles inform intuition in general and provide insight into the evolution of the single-point statistical measures in particular: (A), (B), (a2), (b2), (ab), …

Experimental Measurements And Simulation Of Mixing And Chemical Reaction In A Stirred Tank, Robertp Zipp, Gary Kent Patterson
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Effects of mixing on the rate of second-order chemical reactions have been studied by measuring the time-average degree of conversion at enough points in a steady-state, continuous-flow stirred reactor to provide comparisons with numerical simulations of the same reactions using a standard Reynolds-averaged turbulence simulation code with an added closure. The reactants were introduced in widely separated feed streams in order to provide a difficult test for the measurements and simulations. Concentration and segregation measurements were made with two fluorescence based methods - one remote and one using a fiber optic probe. The rates of mixing and reaction were simulated …
Optical Digital Fragmentation Measuring Systems -- Inherent Sources Of Error, Norbert H. Maerz, Wei Zhou
Optical Digital Fragmentation Measuring Systems -- Inherent Sources Of Error, Norbert H. Maerz, Wei Zhou
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Automated optical imaging systems of measuring fragmentation are increasingly being used in the mining, comminution, and materials handling industries. These methods have been well received in many of the industries involved. Considering that in many of these applications there are no alternative ways of sizing material, having even a rudimentary measurement of size distributions allows evaluations of explosive, blast design, detonator performance, crusher and milling performance, and material degradation due to transport.
Optical methods have inherent limitations, which reflect on accuracy, precision, and reproducibility of measurement results. This stems from the fact that there are myriads of variables, which affect …
