Plasticized, Antiplasticized And Crystalline Conducting Polymers And Precursors Thereof, Ravi F. Saraf
Plasticized, Antiplasticized And Crystalline Conducting Polymers And Precursors Thereof, Ravi F. Saraf
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents
Materials containing precursors to electrically conductive polymers and electrically conductive polymers are described which have a high degree of crystallinity. The high degree of crystallinity is achieved by preparing the materials under conditions which provide a high degree of mobility to the polymer molecules permitting them to associate with one another to form a crystalline state. High levels of electrical conductivity are achieved in the electrically conductive materials without stretch orienting the material. The enhanced electrical conductivity is isotropic as compared to a stretch oriental film which has isotropic electrical conductivity.

The Mechanism Of Electrocatalytic Reduction Of Oxygen On Manganese Dioxide, Yu-Liang Cao, Han-Xi Yang, Xin-Ping Ai, Li-Fen Xiao
Journal of Electrochemistry
The oxygen electroreduction on the MnO2 electrode was investigated by analysis of the polarzation properties of oxygen reduciton and its dependence on MnO2 discharge state, in combination with the characterization of discharge intermediate and the kinetic parameters of the oxygen reduction. Based on the experimental observation and mechanistic analysis, it was suggested that the reduction of oxygen was closely related to the discharge behaviors of MnO2. When MnO2 was electrochimically reduced to MnOOH, it was immediately oxidized by oxygen molecules. Thus the oxygen reduction proceeds through continuous oxidation of the discharge product of MnO2 …

Effects Of Solvent Model Flexibility On Aqueous Electrolyte Behavior Between Electrodes, Richard L. Rowley, John N. Harb, Clint G. Guymon, Matthew L. Hunsaker, Douglas Henderson
Faculty Publications
Molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out for aqueous electrolyte solutions between model electrode surfaces. The effect of solvent model flexibility on bult and double layer properties was observed for electrode surface charge densities of 0, 0.1 and 0.2 and ion concentrations of 0, 0.5 and 1 M. Two flexible models were used to isolate the effects of flexibility from the effects of a change in the condensed-phase dipole moment. Model flexibility increases the pure water self-diffusion coefficient while a larger liquid diple moment substantially decreases it. There is an increase in ion contact adsorption and counter ion affinity with …

Modification Of Biodegradable Polyesters With Inorganic Fillers, Georgia Chouzouri
Theses
In attempts to address the growing need of materials with controlled degradation characteristics and good mechanical properties for tissue engineering applications, composites based on biodegradable polymers and a potentially bioactive novel inorganic synthetic filler were produced and characterized. Composites were produced by solution mixing of a commercial polylactic acid, as well as a biodegradable thermoplastic polyester based on butylene adipate/succinate, with synthetic magnesium/aluminum carbonate minerals, known as hydrotalcites. Two types of hydrotalcites, at 30 wto/o filler level, were used: surface coated and uncoated. Composites were also melt-mixed in a twin-screw extruder for comparison.

Observation Of Novel Liquid-Crystalline Phase Above The Bulk-Melting Temperature, Keshav S. Gautam, Satyendra Kumar, Didier Wermeille, Doug Robinson, Ali Dhinojwala
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
In this paper, we show that a noncrystalline but ordered smectic-like phase exists above the bulk-melting temperature (T-m) at poly(n-alkyl acrylates)-air interface. The surface ordered phase is one monolayer thick and undergoes a sharp transition from order to disorder 10degreesC above T-m for n=22. The presence of a surface phase that does not exist in the bulk has important implications in the design of thermally responsive adhesives.

Oxidation Behavior Of Zr-Cu-Al-Ni Amorphous Alloys In Air At 300~500℃, H. H. Hsieh, W. Kai, T. G. Neih, Y. Kawamura
Journal of Electrochemistry
The oxidation behavior of the Zr- based bulk amorphous alloy (BMG; Zr-30Cu-10Al-5Ni in at.%) was studied in dry air over the temperature range 300~500 ℃. The kinetic results indicated that the amorphous alloy oxidized linearly at 300 ℃, while the parabolic oxidation was observed at 350~425 ℃, and the oxidation behavior at 500 ℃ was irregular and complicated. In general, the scales formed on the surface of the amorphous alloy were temperature-dependent, consisting of tetragonal-ZrO2 at 300 ℃, and of mostly tetragonal-ZrO2 as well as minor amounts of monoclinic-ZrO2 and CuO at T ≥ 350 ℃.

The secretory pathway of Pichia pastoris was genetically re-engineered to perform sequential glycosylation reactions that mimic early processing of N-glycans in humans and other higher mammals. After eliminating nonhuman glycosylation by deleting the initiating alpha-1,6-mannosyltransferase gene from P. pastoris, several combinatorial genetic libraries were constructed to localize active alpha-1,2-mannosidase and human beta-1,2-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase I (GnTI) in the secretory pathway. First, >32 N-terminal leader sequences of fungal type II membrane proteins were cloned to generate a leader library. Two additional libraries encoding catalytic domains of alpha-1,2-mannosidases and GnTI from mammals, insects, amphibians, worms, and fungi were cloned to generate catalytic domain libraries. …
