Non-Isothermal Reaction-Diffusion Systems With Thermodynamically Coupled Heat And Mass Transfer, Yaşar Demirel
Non-Isothermal Reaction-Diffusion Systems With Thermodynamically Coupled Heat And Mass Transfer, Yaşar Demirel
Papers in Analytical Chemistry
Non-isothermal reaction-diffusion (RD) systems control the behavior of many transport and rate processes in physical, chemical, and biological systems. A considerable work has been published on mathematically coupled nonlinear differential equations of RD systems by neglecting the possible thermodynamic couplings among heat and mass fluxes, and reaction velocities. Here, the thermodynamic coupling refers that a flux occurs without its primary thermodynamic driving force, which may be gradient of temperature, or chemical potential, or reaction affinity. This study presents the modeling equations of non-isothermal RD systems with coupled heat and mass fluxes excluding the coupling of chemical reactions using the linear …

Ultrasonically Set Glass Polyalkenoate Cements For Orthodontic Applications, D. A. Tanner, N. Rushe, Mark R. Towler
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
There is an accepted clinical requirement for a luting cement that can be command set upon satisfactory placement of an orthodontic appliance onto dentition. This work evaluates the suitability of ultrasound, imparted from a dental scaler, as a potential mechanism for achieving this. The net setting times and subsequent compressive strengths of a range of commercial and experimental glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs) were evaluated, using modified ISO 9917 methods, when set both chemically and by ultrasound. The ultrasound was applied to the GPC through an orthodontic brace. It was possible to command set GPCs by the application of five to …

Optimisation Of The Composition Of An Acrylic Bone Cement: Application To Relative Amounts Of The Initiator And The Activator/Co-Initiator In Surgical Simplex®P, S. Madigan, M. R. Towler, G. Lewis
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In cemented arthroplasties, the two-part self-curing acrylic bone cement is currently the only material used for anchoring the total joint replacement to the contiguous bone. In virtually all commercially available formulations of this cement, the agents used for the initiation and activation/co-initiation of the radical polymerisation reaction are benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and N, N dimethyl-paratoluidine (DMPT), respectively. There are no reports in the open literature on the rationale for the amounts of these and other constituents in the formulations of the cement. Given the concerns that have been raised in the literature regarding the effect of residual DMPT on the …

Makara Journal of Technology
Modification of Bonding Strength Test of WC HVOF Thermal Spray Coating on Rocket Nozzle. One way to reduce structural weight of RX-100 rocket is by modifying the nozzle material and processing. Nozzle is the main target in weight reduction due to the fact that it contributes 30 % to the total weight of the structur. An alternative for this is by substitution of massive graphite, which is currently used as thermal protector in the nozzle, with thin layer of HVOF (High Velocity Oxy-Fuel) thermal spray layer. This paper presents the characterization of nozzle base material as well as the modification …

A Quantitative Model Of Error Accumulation During Pcr Amplification, Elsje Pienaar, M. Theron, M. Nelson, Hendrik J. Viljoen
Hendrik J. Viljoen Publications
The amplification of target DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) produces copies which may contain errors. Two sources of errors are associated with the PCR process: (1) editing errors that occur during DNA polymerase-catalyzed enzymatic copying and (2) errors due to DNA thermal damage. In this study a quantitative model of error frequencies is proposed and the role of reaction conditions is investigated. The errors which are ascribed to the polymerase depend on the efficiency of its editing function as well as the reaction conditions; specifically the temperature and the dNTP pool composition. Thermally induced errors stem mostly from …
Retrofit Of Distillation Columns Using Thermodynamic Analysis, Yaşar Demirel
Retrofit Of Distillation Columns Using Thermodynamic Analysis, Yaşar Demirel
Papers in Physical Properties
Thermodynamic analysis provides the column grand composite curves and exergy loss profiles, which are becoming readily available for a converged distillation column simulation. For example, the Aspen Plus simulator performs the thermodynamic analysis through its Column–Targeting tool for rigorous column calculations. This study uses the column grand composite curves and the exergy loss profiles obtained from Aspen Plus to assess the performance of the existing distillation columns, and reduce the costs of operation by appropriate retrofits in a methanol plant. Effectiveness of the retrofits is also assessed by means of thermodynamics and economics. The methanol plant utilizes two distillation columns …

On The Performance Of Imt-2000 Communication Link Based On Stratospheric Platforms, Iskandar Iskandar, Shigeru Shimamoto
Makara Journal of Technology
A new means for providing wireless communication has been currently proposed. It is based on aerial vehicle known as High Altitude Platform or Stratospheric Platforms (SPF). The SPF will be operated at an altitude of 17-22 km above the ground. Therefore, the channel condition may be different compared with those of the conventional terrestrial or satellite wireless channel. In this paper, the channel propagation characteristic of such a system is firstly investigated by means of ray tracing algorithm. We emphasize our investigation in a typical urban environment, in which the mobile users mostly exist. We developed building block model for …

Analysis Of Technical Energy Losses By Using Simulation, Betrianis Betrianis, Randite Herawan
Makara Journal of Technology
Model is a representation of a system. Through model, it can be easier to forecast and control the changing of each element system. Electricity distribution is also a system. Losses are general problem that exist in a distribution network system. But with the right methods, specifically technical energy losses can be reduced in order to increase the efficiency. By making model of the distribution network, the value of technical energy losses in the whole network as well as in every line can be observed. Simulation can also be used to see all losses reduction alternatives. By comparing results from each …

Modeling Of Coupled-Tank System Using Fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno Model, Aries Subiantoro
Makara Journal of Technology
Modeling of Coupled-Tank System Using Fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno Model. This paper describes modeling of coupledtank system based on data measurement using fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model. The fuzzy clustering method of Gustafson- Kessel algorithm is used to classify input-output data into several clusters based on distance similarity of a member of input-output data from center of cluster. The formed clusters are projected orthonormally into each linguistic variables of premise part to determine membership function of fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model. By estimating data in each cluster, the consequent parameters of fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model are calculated using weighted least-squares method. The resulted fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model is …

Design of Induction Motor Drive Without Velocity Sensor Using Current Vector Controller with Full and Reduced Observer Moving to DQ Axis. The observer is used in estimation velocity sensor usually in α-β axis, therefore this situation will need an extra transformation when we want to add compensator because the flux model is in direct and quadrature-axis dq. Every used the transformation to make possible emerge an error. So in this simulation is used a method to estimate the velocity of induction motor drive with observer that is moved to dq-axis. The model of actual motor used is in alfa-beta axis, …

Hybrid Identification System with ARX and Fast Fourier Transform in Application of a Quarter of Vehicle Half Active Suspension. In a control system problem, identification system mechanism is a absolute thing, especially in adaptation controlling to disturbance changing. For that case, is needed an identification method which can identify the changing of disturbance in that system. The aim of this research is to give an alternative in system/plant identification which is a combination (hybrid) of ARX and Fast Fourier Transform. So, it is needed an algorithm design for identification process. In this case, the designed algorithm will be implemented in …

Use Of A Modified Zirconia Support In The Separation Of Immunoproteins, Anuradha Subramanian, Sabyasachi Sarkar
Papers in Biotechnology
Zirconia beads (25–38 μm in diameter) were modified with N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid to generate a zirconia based pseudoaffinity support, further referred to as r_PEZ. The influence of pH, salt concentration and temperature on the binding of human immunoglobulin G (hIgG) to r_PEZ was studied. Temperature had no significant impact on the maximum binding capacity (Qmax), and the equilibrium-binding constant (Kd), whereas pH and the salt concentration had a noticeable impact on both Qmax and Kd. The Qmax value of 55 mg hIgG/ml of bead was obtained at a pH of 5.5 and found to decrease with an increase of pH. The …

Cell culture supernatants rich in monoclonal antibody (Mab) subtypes IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, and IgG3 were chromatographed on a r_PEZ column, and on a protein A-hyper D col-umn that was purchased commercially. All Mab subtypes bound to r_PEZ and process yields in the range of 88 to 99% were obtained. The purity of the Mab products were ascertained by …
Effect Of Co On No And N2o Conversions In Nonthermal Argon Plasma, Morris D. Argyle, Gui-Bing Zhao, Maciej Radosz
Effect Of Co On No And N2o Conversions In Nonthermal Argon Plasma, Morris D. Argyle, Gui-Bing Zhao, Maciej Radosz
Faculty Publications
200-600 ppm of CO inhibit NO conversion in nonthermal Ar plasma, but do not produce N2O. However, 1.01% of CO has no effect on NO conversion, but produces N2O. In general, N2O conversion in Ar plasma decreases with increasing CO concentration. These experimental results cannot be explained by charge transfer reactions of Ar+. Selectivity analysis of all excited states of Ar possibly contributing to NOX conversion without and with CO suggests that only AR(3P2) contributes to NOX conversion and CO dissociation. A kinetic model of 43 reactions is required to model NO Conversion or N2O conversion in Ar without CO, …
