Career And Technical Education Teachers’ Beliefs About Developing Students’ Motivation To Write, Katie Graham
Career And Technical Education Teachers’ Beliefs About Developing Students’ Motivation To Write, Katie Graham
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Students in the U.S. write poorly. Although postsecondary and workplace writing expectations continue to rise, writing instruction has largely remained unchanged over time. As a result, student writing outcomes continue to fall below expectations from both an assessment and hirable proficiency standpoint. Career and Technical Education (CTE) provides a unique opportunity to motivate students who are otherwise disengaged in writing (ACTE, 2009). The benefits of helping students develop their writing-self efficacy has well-documented support (Bruning & Horn, 2009; Bandura, 1997; Pajares 2003; Pajares & Valiante, 2006). However, little is known about the writing opportunities provided in CTE classes or CTE …

Modeling And Analysis Of The Impact Of Vocational Education On The Unemployment Rate In Nigeria, Abayomi Ayoade, Opeyemi Odetunde, Bidemi Falodun
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Unemployment is a major determinant of a weak economy and a good measure of living standard in a country. Nigeria is faced with the problem of unemployment at present. By that, a mathematical model is formulated to investigate the effect of vocational education on the unemployment challenges in Nigeria. The model is tested for the basic requirements of a good mathematical model. The equilibrium analysis of the model is conducted and both the unemployment-free and the unemployment endemic equilibria are obtained. The threshold for the implementation success of the vocational education program is also derived following the approach of epidemic …
The Social Construction Of The Progressive Era: A Critical-Historiographical Case Study In Vocationalism, Brian D. Carlson
The Social Construction Of The Progressive Era: A Critical-Historiographical Case Study In Vocationalism, Brian D. Carlson
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
For centuries, schooling has served as the primary precursor to jobs and careers, and ultimately the window of opportunity toward economic mobility. Vocationalism describes the economic potential of education, represented by the synthesis of educational policy, curricula, and ideology. This study contends that vocationalism has conditioned the public toward the disposition of education as a social commodity for the development of human capital. In turn, this study explores the significance of vocationalism through a critical-historiographical case study of educational reforms within Milwaukee during the Progressive Era. This study asks the question, how has ideology contributed toward the establishment of vocationalism …

Employers struggle to find employees for middle skills jobs in computer technology, nursing, advanced manufacturing and other fields requiring postsecondary technical education. The number of students pursuing postsecondary education does not meet the needs of employers. This study examined the influence of economic, social/cultural, institutional, dual credit participation, and academic variables upon students’ intentions to enroll in program options at a technical college. The study was conducted with the dual enrolled or former dual enrolled students at a small rural technical college in East Tennessee with a sample size of 75. Linear regression was used to determine the relationship between …

The Importance Of Earnings In Career Technical Education Field Of Study Choice, Karen S. Childers
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to examine factors influencing community college Career Technical Education (CTE) students in their field of study choice. The problem was twofold: (1) Community college CTE performance metrics include earnings goals, but there is little research to inform the performance metric (Harrington, Mbomeda, & Casillas, 2018; Roberts, Leufgen, & Booth, 2018); and (2) CTE students, who are disproportionately economically disadvantaged, pursue fields of study that do not lead to a living wage (Bahr, 2010; Booth & Bahr, 2012; Zhang & Oymak, 2018).
For this within-stage mixed model design (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004), …

Meta-Analytic Procedures For Career And Technical Education Post-Secondary Researchers And Practitioners, Conrad Oh-Young, Howard R. D. Gordon, Xue Xing, John Filler
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
Meta-analytic studies are syntheses of literature in which researchers use statistical means to summarize the findings presented across primary studies. They are of great interest in the fields of medicine and social sciences with numerous examples published in peer-reviewed journals. However, it appears that career and technical education (CTE) researchers are either not performing these research syntheses, or are not publishing their findings. Thus, there are three purposes to this manuscript. The first is to present CTE researchers and practitioners with a rationale as to why meta-analyses should be performed. The second is to provide guidelines that researchers and practitioners …

Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Shortage Of Skilled Labor In The Construction Industry And Vocational Education, Heather Linton Hightower
Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Shortage Of Skilled Labor In The Construction Industry And Vocational Education, Heather Linton Hightower
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a noted shortage in skilled labor throughout the construction industry. This shortage has been attributed by some professional organizations to generational differences in the workforce participants. Leading some to suggest that younger generations exhibit character flaws such as laziness at a higher rate than that of older generations. It is the position of this author that this conclusion is flawed. The decrease in vocational training in public schools and the societal preference for America’s youth to attend college rather than learn a skilled trade must be considered primary drivers of this trend. Research will analyze the causation …

College Is Trade School For The Elite, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
Donald J. Trump has a degree from an Ivy League university—my alma mater, in fact—but he is not one of the Ivies’ admirers. “We must embrace new and effective job-training approaches, including online courses, high school curricula, and private-sector investment that prepare people for trade, manufacturing, technology and other really well-paying jobs and careers,” the president declared in March. “These kinds of options can be a positive alternative to a four-year degree.”
If ever an issue seemed assured of bipartisan support, you’d think it would be an initiative that helps connect workers with work. But up went the howls of …
Justice Involved Veterans’ Post-Release Employment-Related Experiences, James L. Dawson
Justice Involved Veterans’ Post-Release Employment-Related Experiences, James L. Dawson
Dissertations
In 2010, the cost to U.S. taxpayers was $39 billion to incarcerate individuals in State and Federal Correctional facilities. A sub-population of these prisoners is those that have served in the U.S. military, or “Justice Involved Veterans” (JIVs). Many Veterans are eligible for federal and state funds for Career Tech. Education to assist them with obtaining employment, which research shows often contributes to keeping them from re-offending. However, recent studies of employment after prison have all been quantitative investigations that do not incorporate the voices of JIVs describing their experiences in depth. Bush’s (2011), and Bolman and Deal’s (2008) theories …

Non-traditional ways of achieving a business qualification are becoming more common and popular internationally. In this case study from New Zealand, a joint delivery model including full credit between two higher education institutions, a vocational-based polytechnic and a traditional university, shows the strong foundations that can be built to assist a diverse student group moving into higher levels of study.
A representative sample of graduates (2009-2014) from the New Zealand Diploma in Business taught at a polytechnic who then progressed to a business or management degree with a partner university were surveyed to gauge student expectations and experiences of both …

Competence-Oriented Instruction In Vocational Education In Austria: An Empirical Comparison Between Two Instructional Approaches, Peter Slepcevic-Zach, Ph.D., Sigrid Wimmer, Michaela Stock, Manuela Paechter
Competence-Oriented Instruction In Vocational Education In Austria: An Empirical Comparison Between Two Instructional Approaches, Peter Slepcevic-Zach, Ph.D., Sigrid Wimmer, Michaela Stock, Manuela Paechter
International Journal for Business Education
A distinct feature of the Austrian education system is its differentiation of programs in vocational education. Among these programs, the dual education system has a long tradition: Students undergo an apprenticeship in a company while also attending a vocational school in part-time. More than other forms of education, this combination of on-the-job training at the work place and instruction in vocational school requires constant adaptation to economic requirements.
Against this background, a new instructional approach, so called areas of learning with a focus on competence were introduced in the vocational school Eisenstadt in the year 2010. The introduction of this …

Enterprise-Resource-Planning-Systems (ERP-Systems) – such as SAP, BaaN, Infor LN, MS Dynamics, WinLine and BMD – are becoming increasingly important for private and public enterprises and NGOs around the globe. The use of ERP-Systems leads to changing (vocational) working routines. ERP-Systems are therefore an important subject for vocational education and – from a scientific viewpoint – a research topic of high interest. However, only a very limited number of journal articles are available that address the use of ERP-systems in the context of business education. This article contributes to this field of research with an analysis of learning assignments applying ERP-Systems. …

Enhancing Literacy Among Rural, Work-Oriented Youth : A Cultural Analysis, Marta Kliger Albert
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation focuses on educational reform in New York State in relation to two policies that I term "dual reform." The 1996 Regents graduation policy required all students to participate in the college-prep curriculum and attain a Regents diploma, while the 2001 Career and Technical Education (CTE) policy promoted integrative approaches to teach academic topics within CTE. The central study questions were: How has literacy reform been constituted in relation to CTE within two rural communities? How does CTE enable and constrain youth literacy learning and development?
Testing The Effectiveness Of A Quality Assurance System: The Example Of Hong Kong, David Lim
Testing The Effectiveness Of A Quality Assurance System: The Example Of Hong Kong, David Lim
Support & Other Units (THEi)
Operating a quality assurance system in tertiary education is the rule rather than the exception, because of the belief that it will improve quality. However, proving this is not easy. This study examines three ways of providing the evidence: the a priori method, the stepwise backtracking method, and the external evaluation method. The quality assurance system of the Vocational Training Council of Hong Kong is used as a case‐study, but the findings on the advantages and disadvantages of using these methods have relevance for testing the effectiveness of quality assurance systems for other education institutions.
