Earning industry certifications helps people prepare for jobs in a range of careers. Doing so in secondary school may help students prepare for college as well. Using administrative data on two cohorts of first-time 9^th graders in Florida, we examined whether earning a certification was associated with postsecondary enrollment and degree attainment and whether the timing of the certification influenced that relationship. Earning a certification in high school prepared students for success in both 2-year and 4-year colleges. Research led by Boston University Professor V. Scott Solberg has shown that among matched groups of students, resiliency is the key factor in determining why one group succeeds academically while others do not. There are six interrelated resiliency skills that can be measured and taught: Valuing Education. Academic Confidence, Connectedness, Stress Management, Health and Well-Being, and Intrinsic Motivation. And when students’ resiliency increases, their academic performance improves, along with attendance, behavior, and graduation rates, as well as significant improvements in engagement, confidence, perseverance, and postsecondary readiness. Career academies are small learning communities that allow high school students to learn their core content in the context of the career field they may be interested in pursuing. This type of learning environment incorporates business and industry and postsecondary institutions so academy students receive academic curricula that prepares them for higher education and allows students to have experiences in the career field. This study compared high school student's perceptions of technology and technological literacy to those perceptions of the general public. Additionally, individual student groups were compared statistically to determine significant differences between the groups. The ITEA/Gallup Poll instrument was used to survey high school student's perceptions of technology in the study. The instrument has been used twice (2001, 2004) in the United States and once (2005) in Hong Kong to survey adult's perceptions of technology. To accomplish this purpose, current research and literature on performance-based assessment, linking writing assessment with instruction, writing across the curriculum, and the School-to-Work movement were reviewed. This paper describes a research study conducted using a survey instrument to determine what factors influence high school seniors when making decisions related to future careers and college education. Students were asked to indicate what careers they intended to pursue, what people and factors influenced their careers choices, and their familiarity with and impressions of the allied health professions. The majority indicated that personal satisfaction, employment opportunities, and income were the most important factors influencing their career choices. Although 76.5% of the respondents had a favorable impression of allied health, only 15% indicated that they were very familiar with the …

A small gas engines textbook outline based on information gained from this study is also presented.
