The notion that computers equipped with software and artificial intelligence (AI) applications can effectively replace human intelligence is under the existing paradigm of operations. This is the leading facilitator of task automation on board a ship to fulfill various jobs and is often supported by numerous scientists/academics who contribute to gaining today’s momentum in public opinion. The discourse of Industry 4.0 in the maritime domain, however, tends to focus heavily on technological contexts and overlooks socio-economic contexts. The dissertation is a study of the implementation of a quality assurance system applied for Vietnam Register as well as other classification societies as imposed in the IMO resolution A739(18) and the Quality System Certification Scheme (QSCS). The concepts of quality, quality assurance and the process of the standardisation are clarified, taking into account the changes in terms of management and operation in the maritime industry nowadays. This dissertation examines the need for the training of shore based personnel employed in shipping companies. Numerous studies address the human element in shipping - the Seafarer, as one of the main causes of accidents and pollution. The dissertation is a study of the lessons to be learned from casualties to be included in the PMMA nautical curriculum. A review was undertaken at the present curriculum together with its historical developments. On the other hand, a thorough investigation and research was conducted in consonance to the requirements provided for by the STCW 95 as the basis of the future nautical curriculum. This dissertation is a study of the new developments in maritime technology, new educational methodology and technology, and the new standards of STCW 95. The impact upon Chinese MET is analysed in relation to these three aspects. A general study is made of the latest developments in maritime technology and MET educational methodology.
