As children continue in school this gap grows substantially; therefore, it was important to understand perspectives of stakeholders regarding this gap. Many early childhood teachers feel increased pressure to prioritize academic rigor in their early childhood classrooms over student centered developmentally appropriate practices (DAP). The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore early childhood National Board Certified Teachers’ (NBCTS) perspectives on the DAP and strategies they use that are consistent with DAP guidelines. This paper responds to the proposed implementation of lesson study as a professional development intervention for multicultural instruction in the United States. It includes an investigation of the literature in relation to the use of higher-order thinking skills, Banks’s four approaches for integrating multicultural instruction, and lesson study as a proposed professional development intervention in multicultural instruction. Expulsion rates for children occur at a rate of 10 children per every 1,000 enrolled in center-based early learning programs. The inability of teachers to manage the challenging behaviors of children contributes to these rates. AbstractResearch on how professional development has influenced teacher self-efficacy revealed that properly executed professional development promoted effective teacher practices and positive student outcomes. Bandura’s and Tschannen-Moran’s social learning theories were used in this basic qualitative study to address the problem of the lack of current investigations related to prekindergarten (pre-k) educators’ perspectives regarding professional development that influenced their teacher self-efficacy. The research questions focused on pre-k educators’ perceived characteristics of professional development that increased their confidence in their ability to be effective in the area of curriculum, classroom management, and motivating and engaging students. There is a persistent academic achievement gap between African American and European American elementary students in mathematics and English language arts. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore third through fifth-grade elementary educators’ perspectives on strategies used to narrow the gap in achievement for African American students in mathematics and English language arts from a school located in the southeastern region of the United States; consequently, the research question was developed to focus on these perspectives.
