This study investigates the perspectives of opportunities and challenges of middle school mathematics’ teachers. To gain these perspectives, an ethnographic study was conducted by interviewing four middle school mathematics teachers in central Illinois. The results of this study imply that teachers of different backgrounds and teaching environments have varying perspectives about challenges and opportunities in the classroom. In Guyana, South America, the Ministry of Education seeks to provide universal, inclusive education that prepares its citizens to take their productive places in society and to creatively solve complex, real-world problems. However, with frequent national assessments that are used to place students in high school, college or into jobs, teachers resort to using familiar strategies such as lecture, recitation and test drilling. When teachers develop successful instructional strategies and efficient classroom management, they establish control and assert authority so that learning can take place in the classroom. The teachers’ experiences with wireless laptop technology in this study, however, demonstrate that ubiquitous access to this technology in the classroom can sometimes create challenges for teachers, from managerial, curricular, to communicative perspectives.
