Preparing And Adapting Reading Materials For Esl Adults, Kathryn L. Riley
MA TESOL Collection
The adult ESL student who is illiterate or functionally illiterate in his native language has particular difficulty when learning to read English. This paper is a step by step description of a materials writing project undertaken at Bristol Community College, Fall River, Massachusetts; the goal of the project was to develop reading materials for adult Portuguese ESL students, many of whom were illiterate. Included in the paper are the general guidelines followed, specific steps taken to meet the requirements of each guideline, and a discussion of each level of materials developed. Examples of all four levels are included. Particular emphasis …
The Reading Process And Alphablanks, Dale Saul, Linda Driver
The Reading Process And Alphablanks, Dale Saul, Linda Driver
MA TESOL Collection
Alphablanks was developed as an aid for teaching reading by Rosalie R. Saul. It has been used chiefly in teaching children to read in their native language, especially in the field of learning disabilities. We wanted to expand its use into the ESL classroom. But we also wanted to present a rationale for using Alphablanks, to research the field of reading and how we go about learning to read, in order to find out exactly what areas of reading Alphablanks would help. Thus this paper is divided into two main parts: a summary of current research into reading, interpreting this …

A Survey Of Projects Attempting To Provide Experimental Enrichment To Improve Improvement In Reading, Adell H. Thurman
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In this complex modern world, reading is a medium of communication and a tool of learning that is an indispensable function in society (Tinker and McCullough, 1962) .
For many years the issues of reading disability were argued in terms of genetic as compared to environmental factors . In the light of research it is now known that the home produces a powerful impact upon the child's ability to learn and that social and cultural disadvantages can depress academic ability.
Over the years educators have been aware of the importance that experience plays in the child's preparation for reading. Hilliard …

A Comparative Study Of The Effect Of Teacher Stimulation On The Amount Of Reading Done By A Fifth Grade Class, Chesley Charles Packer

A Survey Of Beginning Intermediate Grade Teacher Needs In Teaching Reading, Victor Royce Bolon
A Survey Of Beginning Intermediate Grade Teacher Needs In Teaching Reading, Victor Royce Bolon
All Master's Theses
Much concern has been expressed over whether or not the schools are doing an adequate job of teaching reading. This problem can best be attacked in one of two ways. It can be approached through a study of the teacher or of the pupil. Since a multitude of studies have been made concerning student needs and inadequacies in reading this study will concern itself with the teacher, his needs and his inadequacies in teaching reading.

A History Of The Teaching Of Reading In The Elementary Grades In Albuquerque Public Schools, Esther Hossmann
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The problem of this study is to show how the present methods of teaching reading in the public elementary schools of Albuquerque, New Mexico, have developed. It is proposed to try to trace the changes in aims, methods, and materials in the teaching of reading in these schools from their establishment in 1891 to the present time, 1947. The result should give the reader a story of the historical development of the teaching of reading in this particular school system.
