Leadership And Job Satisfaction, Stephanie Brooke
Leadership And Job Satisfaction, Stephanie Brooke
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The objective of this research is to understand the impact of leadership style on employee job satisfaction in an effort to improve leader-employee relations in nonprofit child care settings. Since turnover rates, separation costs, vacancy costs, and training costs are high in child care centers (Vickers, 2002), providing strategies for increasing job satisfaction will lead to a more stable environment for children and their families, promote positive leader member relations, and strengthen the organizational climate. Since leadership style can critically influence employee satisfaction, this study is of significant importance in promoting social change. Specifically, it focuses on a unique industry, …
The Power Of Now In Leadership, Greg Romaneck
The Power Of Now In Leadership, Greg Romaneck
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
In many ways leadership can seem like firefighting. On almost any day a seemingly constant stream of problems, difficulties, and impediments can flow into a leader’s life. At times it seems that any sort of focus on the “big picture” is impossible because so many nitty-gritty issues have to be dealt with. Yet, even in the face of such a negative onslaught of responsibility, it is still possible to maintain both your sanity and your focus.

Imsa20: Bold Ideas, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy
IMSA History
In the mid 1980s, the state of Illinois, recognizing a sharply increased need for highly skilled leaders in mathematics, science and technology, founded the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy®. Twenty years later, the national demand for mathematics, science and technology leaders has never been greater. The National Academies report - Rising Above the Gathering Storm and President Bush's American Competitiveness Initiative - address the growing concern that the United States is losing its competitive advantage as countries abroad invest heavily in the education and training of scientists and engineers. Both initiatives call for increased commitments in scientific research and in …

Academic Leadership In The Research University: Responsibilities For Faculty Governance, Michael Miller, Richard Newman
Academic Leadership In The Research University: Responsibilities For Faculty Governance, Michael Miller, Richard Newman
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Faculty working in research-intensive university environments find a variety of challenges to their time, energies, and resources, including finding balance between the traditional areas of teaching, research, and service. In most research universities, the research focus becomes all encompassing, and institutional service commitments are called into question. The current study of over 500 faculty in research university environments demonstrates the need for shared governance to be clear and purposeful in its work and intentions in order to muster faculty support.

Leading Community College Distance Education, John Adams
Leading Community College Distance Education, John Adams
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Technological, demographic, and competitive changes in distance education (DE) pose complex leadership and strategic issues for community colleges. Leaders must establish institutional and academic objectives, develop financial and technological strategies, and organize, market, and evaluate DE initiatives. Their objectives and strategies should anticipate and help shape the developing competitive environment in which their colleges operate. This qualitative case study examined DE administrative and staff leadership roles, organization structures, and strategies at three Midwestern community colleges with expanding DE programs. Leadership teams were small. New roles and organizational structures were evolving, and the colleges were maintaining strong video delivery while developing …

Teacher Supervision Methods In Virginia, Gregory Wayne Florence
Teacher Supervision Methods In Virginia, Gregory Wayne Florence
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated teacher supervision methods in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the absence of state mandated requirements. The literature supports the use of formative and summative feedback, multiple data sources and methods, collaboration between teacher and supervisor, professional growth goals linked to school improvement, and measures of student learning.A web-based questionnaire was used to survey 229 public elementary school teachers across Virginia regarding which teacher supervision methods are used, teacher perception toward those methods, and whether teacher perceptions vary with the method, supervisor's leadership style, or teacher characteristics. The data suggest that a majority of school division supervision programs …
Engaged, But Not Heroic, Academic Leadership, John B. Bennett
Engaged, But Not Heroic, Academic Leadership, John B. Bennett
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Over the years, I have explored leadership challenges faced by department chairpersons and school deans. In this essay I reflect on some findings, noting that they also apply to other educational leaders such as faculty senate members and student affairs officers. Most mid-level leaders struggle with the tradition of defining leadership in terms of individualistic values and mythologies of seeing the leader in terms of the individualistic, heroic cowboy of the Western film and novel. Then I examine the position of institutional president. Here too some leaders aim to be heroic figures, like the fabled cowboy. Almost inevitably, their behaviors …
Four Dimensions Of Leadership In The Problem-Solving Of Education Deans, Antonia Donofrio
Four Dimensions Of Leadership In The Problem-Solving Of Education Deans, Antonia Donofrio
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
This study links personal attributes of deans of schools and colleges of education to the problem solving contexts in which they make decisions that affect the programs they serve. We describe the mix of intellect, emotion, social acumen, and moral attributes that deans draw upon when they respond to vignettes that capture the multifaceted nature of problem solving in their positions. This study is a continuation of research that attempts to identify characteristics of deans of education who have survived in their role. This is an important issue, as schools and colleges report difficulty in identifying deans who can meet …

Teaching In The Information Age: Leadership Aspects Of Integrated Learning With Technology In Democratic Environments, Patrick Mendis
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Teaching as a collaborative enterprise can further be enhanced by the use of integrated learning methods and the infusion of technology. Teacher as a leader must then work as a catalyst to facilitate this learning process. A creation of democratic environment has become increasingly easier with the use of the technology. Yet, the right attitude in leadership and the adaptive challenge are as equally important as the infusion of technology into classroom learning and teaching. Teacher is still the noble master and technology is the revolutionary servant in a more democratic world.
