This paper explores participant perceptions of the impact of a Peer Observation of Teaching scheme offered as part of an accredited Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching for academic staff/faculty in higher education. The Postgraduate Certificate Program has been designed to support the continuing professional development of academic staff/faculty through integration of peer learning. Looking at the current practices found in academe with respect to identifying and training current leaders, will broaden our understanding of institutional involvement, succession planning and leadership development. Within the scope of land grant universities, this study will quantify how higher education institutions identify academic leaders as department chairs, associate deans, deans, and provosts, how they provide training, and how they support these leaders in their careers. A survey of current institutional practices for department chairs, associate deans, deans and provosts will offer a better look at the scope of academic leadership identification and preparation.

The Limits Of Service-Learning In Higher Education, Dan W. Butin

This article takes a critical look at the attempted institutionalization of service-learning in higher education. It asks whether service-learning can become deeply embedded within the academy; and if so, what exactly is becoming embedded. Specifically, this article suggests that there are substantial pedagogical, political, and institutional limits to service-learning across the academy. These limits, moreover, are shown to be inherent to the service-learning movement as contemporarily theorized and enacted. The article concludes by reframing some of the grounding assumptions of service-learning to position it as a disciplinary field more suited for becoming genuinely embedded within higher education.

This paper presents the nature of pre-service teacher education in Soviet and post-Soviet Central Asia, a case of Kyrgyzstan; highlights the main issues and discuses the possibilities and approaches undertaken for improving pre-service teacher education. After Central Asian republics gained independence, their higher education was challenged by broad changes in political and economic life, and by the destruction of their ideological values. Disciplining Service Learning: Institutionalization And The Case For Community Studies, Dan W. Butin

This article argues that the service-learning field has been pursuing the wrong revolution. Namely, service learning has been envisioned as a transformative pedagogical practice and philosophical orientation that would change the fundamental policies and practices of the academy. However, its attempted institutionalization faces substantial barriers and positions service learning in an uncomfortable double-bind that ultimately co-opts and neutralizes its agenda. This article argues that a truly transformative agenda may be to create a parallel movement to develop an “academic home” for service learning within academic “community studies” programs. This “disciplining” of service learning is the truly revolutionary potential of institutionalizing …

This article discusses the University of Wisconsin-Extension Administrative Leadership Program (EALP), a model leadership development program for faculty and staff in a variety of university extension settings including: Broadcasting and Media Innovations; Business and Manufacturing Education; Continuing Education; and, Cooperative Extension. The article describes how the program integrates theoretical and applied knowledge about leadership into the curriculum along with the development of specific leadership competencies and abilities. Finally, the article illustrates the outcomes of the leadership development program as perceived and described by both the participants and their supervisors.

I plan to visit other colleges, agriculture businesses, and various other agriculture entities to help update my knowledge and learn about their contribution to the agriculture industry. I have found my schedule of responsibilities at Parkland has kept me so busy that it has been very difficult to adequately keep up to date in our fast changing industry. This leave would allow me to greatly improve my knowledge base for teaching and ultimately my future students will have a better opportunity to learn.
