Scenes From A Sabbatical: Narratives Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema Jun 2025

Scenes From A Sabbatical: Narratives Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

School leadership is often described in terms of vision, strategy, and efficiency. However, the lived experiences of school leaders reveal a far more complex reality—one shaped by relationships, ethical dilemmas, and the daily challenges of guiding a school community. This paper presents insights from a sabbatical study in which the author observed and interviewed leaders at five schools—one public and four faith-based.Four aspects of leadership are illustrated in this essay: the emotionally charged moments, the tensions that arise between competing visions, the fragility of educational institutions, and the role of hospitality in leadership. These narratives illustrate how school leaders navigate conflict, …

Christ-Centered Reasoning: A Platform And Framework For Integrating Christian Faith Into Higher Education., Jf Jf Jun 2025

Christ-Centered Reasoning: A Platform And Framework For Integrating Christian Faith Into Higher Education., Jf Jf

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The integration of Christian faith in higher education can be challenging, as the parameters and scope of integration are not always clear. Notably, the term ‘integration’ has been overused and/or thrown around without distinction within the Christian Liberal Arts halls of learning. Generally, no principles are provided for integration in terms of curriculum, pedagogy, or learning; hence, a clear articulation is required regarding what integration entails with respect to curricula, learning, and pedagogy. There is also an urgent need to theorize integration practically and pragmatically within higher education, particularly in relation to inquiry methodologies and discipline-specific specializations. One way to …

The Experience Of Being A Christian Public School Teacher, Carrie Birmingham Jun 2025

The Experience Of Being A Christian Public School Teacher, Carrie Birmingham

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This research asks, “What is the experience of being a Christian teacher in a public school?” Analysis of semistructured interviews with 16 Christian public school teachers revealed that, while this experience is highly variable and contextualized, teachers experienced four common concerns, making visible how teachers’ religious identity shapes their purpose for teaching, their interactions with supports and oppositions, their values for themselves and for their students, and their perspectives on Christian witness and teaching in their public school settings.

Exploring The Relationship Between Classroom Management And Relational Leadership, Genie Kim, Nancy Ross

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Our research examines teachers’ capacity to cultivate a learning environment conducive to students’ academic and social-emotional flourishing, specifically as it pertains to love and its intersection with classroom management. Utilizing Ross’ (2023) Relational Leadership Scale (RLS), coupled with an adapted version of Tschannen-Moran’s Teacher Efficacy Scale, we measured loving leadership, from the perspective of Teacher Candidates, as they observed their Associate/Host teachers’ behaviors/dispositions within the context of teaching students. The results of our study revealed a moderate positive correlation between classroom management and the overall RLS scores. It was found that teachers who engage in loving leadership behaviors were perceived …

Teaching As A Pedagogy For Christian Faith Development: A Faith-Based Framework For Pre-Service Teachers’ Reflective Practice, Sarah Fischer Jun 2025

Teaching As A Pedagogy For Christian Faith Development: A Faith-Based Framework For Pre-Service Teachers’ Reflective Practice, Sarah Fischer

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

To prepare pre-service teachers to be high-quality educators, Christian teacher educators have the responsibility of integrating professional frameworks of teaching effectiveness and reflective practice into their programs. However, the most commonly used frameworks in the United States have inherent limitations when the specific aims of a Christian teacher education program are considered, such as their isolated construction of teacher identity, their prioritization of behavioral changes over attitudinal changes, and their conceptualization of spatial and relational boundaries. Although these tools promote professional growth, they do not adequately support pre-service teachers’ integration of professional and faith development. The goal of this essay …

The Effect Of Blended Training On Aac Strategy Use By Pre-Service Educational Professionals, Cheri Dodge Chin, Stephanie M. Schaaf, Jennifer Gaylord, Melissa Pebly

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This study explored the feasibility of a blended training program model on the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) strategies by pre-service education speech pathology students. The training incorporated Read-Ask-Answer (RAA) and naturalistic Show-Wait-Respond (SWR) techniques, aiming to increase participants’ competence in AAC strategy application. Four graduate students participated in a single-case A-B research design. Following five baseline sessions, participants completed a one-hour asynchronous online training based on a modified ImPAACT model (Kent-Walsh & Binger, 2013; Kent-Walsh & McNaughton, 2005). The training focused on RAA and SWR strategies and included video demonstrations, written practice opportunities, and reflection activities. Following …

An Interdisciplinary Early Intervention Learning Community For Undergraduate Students, Ciera M. Lorio, Hannah Rudkin, Christina Rauwolf, Luminita Hartle

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

There is currently a nationwide shortage of early intervention (EI) providers in the United States, and the number of families in need of EI services is much greater than the available service providers (CEC, 2019; Barton et al., 2012). One way to increase the number of qualified service providers is to offer better and earlier preservice training in EI at the university level. To meet this need, we designed and implemented the Early Intervention Learning Community (EILC), an extracurricular experience that focused on introducing students to EI and interprofessional practice. The primary components of the EILC included self-guided learning modules, …

Although early education teachers may be highly trained in literacy practices, they need additional support reaching multilingual learners (MLs), for example, by supporting oral language or understanding connections between services identified for students, especially in states such as SC where growth for this student group has been recent and rapid. This study answers the question of professional development (PD) needed for highly trained literacy teachers, focusing on two areas. First, a needs assessment describes the demands of literacy specialists to address the literacy of MLs and connects these need areas to best practice recommendations. Secondly, we address modifications designed based …

The Impact Of Restorative Practices Intervention On School Culture, Lisa Peloquin Jun 2025

The Impact Of Restorative Practices Intervention On School Culture, Lisa Peloquin

Dissertations

The American educational system, historically designed to empower a few while training the majority to be docile workers, is increasingly being called upon to promote greater equity. While some reform efforts promote highly restrictive behavioral policies to boost student achievement, these approaches often serve to recreate the oppressive school systems they seek to reform. Restorative practices, an alternative approach to school reform, emphasizes creating a culture of strong relationships, where children learn the academic and social emotional skills they need to be successful. This paper presents a case study of one urban, public school’s implementation of restorative practices, examining its …

Experiential Learning In Lecture Settings For Ides 200: Programs, Codes & Standards, Emily Cerny

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios

In traditional lecture settings, students take notes from a lecturer’s recitations and have minimal interaction with each other and the world around them. For IDES 200: Programs, Codes & Standards, a key aspect of learning is for students to understand the connections between the concepts learned in class and the built environment. To increase this connection and get students thinking in different manners, experiential learning methodologies were introduced through in-class exercises and within the course assignments alongside typical lectures and lecture comprehension quizzes. By surveying students’ perceptions of assignments and course activities, the goal of this course portfolio is to …

The White Elephant In The Classroom: Using Local History And Resource Pedagogies To Remove It, Dawn N. Colquitt-Anderson

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Years of scholarship outline the benefits of asset-based pedagogy for all students, especially the culturally and linguistically diverse students who are now the majority student population in public schools. But there is scant research on how experienced in-service teachers modify their practices and beliefs to adequately prepare these students for 21st century leadership. This sequential mixed methods case study examined the efforts of elementary and middle school teachers as they grappled with personal, professional, and systemic barriers that arose as they worked to strengthen their cultural and community responsiveness by centering the local history of a historic great migration town.
