Statistics show that many pre-K–12 students in the United States are exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) or potentially traumatic events (PTEs), and a growing body of literature points to these childhood experiences harming children’s academic functioning and future educational attainment. A review of the literature on trauma-informed education (i.e., curriculum and programs designed to mitigate the negative effects of trauma) highlights many teachers’ lack of confidence in combatting issues within student populations affected by adversity and trauma; the research also indicated that teachers with knowledge of trauma/adversity and its implications are crucial to effectively educating at-risk children and adolescents. …

This multilevel path analysis of data collected from the International Civic and Citizenship Study investigates how differing civic education experiences between girls and boys predict notions of citizenship across five Latin American countries. Findings show statistically significant differences by gender, in the perception of civic education. Generally, classroom activities including the value of civic learning in the classroom, willingness to participate in classroom activities, and an open classroom climate were positively related to notions of engagement, while student experience with abuse had a negative relationship. Additionally, evidence suggests that civic learning at school had a stronger impact on male students. …

Purpose: This discourse analysis (Gee, 1999) addresses the moderating effect of school climate on student achievement. It seeks to concretize methods of cultivating an environment that promotes high achievement among traditionally at-risk populations. According to Bandura (1977), an increase in self-efficacy could increase the likelihood that teachers implement scientific inquiry in their classrooms. I explored self-efficacy in an effort to address the overarching problem, an overall inconsistency of inquiry teaching in classrooms. Co-design is a collaborative approach that intertwines individuals' unique perspectives and results in a product that holds creative stake for all parties. In educational contexts, co-design often results in innovative interventions that in turn affect how teachers instruct and interact with their students in the classroom. In this paper, we focus on two teachers who co-designed a unit meant to engage students in theory-building practices. Through a preliminary analysis of classroom video data, we identified six pedagogical strategies teachers enacted including how they used technology, introduced the lesson, facilitated whole-class discussions, monitored, addressed questions and wrapped up the lesson. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, this graduate instructor leveraged the digital world to connect preservice elementary mathematics teachers (PSTs) to students to provide an online learning community. The PSTs applied our content and methods course to teaching online and learned valuable lessons from interacting with the students. It stems from the researcher’s study that explores teaching and learning in secondary school economics in Malta. The underlying conceptual framework for this study is critical realism, which offers an understanding of the world that is real but which may be differently experienced and interpreted by different observers (Alderson, 2021; Bhaskar, 1979; Fletcher, 2017).
