A Framework For Coaching In Early Childhood Settings: Drawing On Bank Street College Of Education’S Developmental-Interaction Approach (Dia), Virginia Casper, Milenis Gonzalez, Tarima Levine, Emily Sharrock, Annie Schaeffing

Bank Street Education Center

Coaching helps teachers activate and better articulate their previous knowledge, skills, values, and belief systems, along with new concepts, to construct and continually refine an approach that is meaningful in their everyday work. This framework captures some commonalities of a positive coaching stance across contexts while allowing enough flexibility to make use of these ideas in ways that will serve that setting and teachers best.

Science At The Center: Meaningful Science Learning In A Preschool Classroom, Sara Raven, Julianne Wenner Aug 2022

Science At The Center: Meaningful Science Learning In A Preschool Classroom, Sara Raven, Julianne Wenner

Publications

Even though children are natural scientists, many preschools isolate and limit science, which can cause children to miss out on valuable learning experiences and school readiness skills. Additionally, minimizing science at the preschool level fails to set a solid foundation for K-12 science education. In this single case study, we focused on the experiences and daily work of one constructivist-oriented preschool teacher who utilized science-based guided play and emergent curriculum as vehicles for important aspects of preschool learning. Findings demonstrate that with careful planning and intention, science can be utilized as a context for nonscience preschool learning objectives outlined by …

Background: Improving the implementation of evidence-based interventions is important for population-level impacts. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is effective for improving school climate and students’ behavioral outcomes, but rural schools often lag behind urban and suburban schools in implementing such initiatives.

Methods/Design: This paper describes a Type 3 hybrid implementation-effectiveness trial of Rural School Support Strategies (RS3), a bundle of implementation support strategies selected to improve implementation outcomes in rural schools. In this two-arm parallel group trial, 40 rural public schools are randomized to receive: 1) a series of trainings about PBIS; or 2) an enhanced condition with training …

Using Student Teaching Evaluations To Assess The Efficacy Of A Robert Noyce Teaching Scholarship In Preparing Candidates For Culturally-Responsive Practices, Teresa J. Bixby, Lauren Landando

Chemistry Department Faculty Articles

The goal of the NSF Robert Noyce Teaching Scholarship is to attract and support highly qualified STEM majors to become secondary-education teachers that are prepared to teach in high-needs schools. At Lewis University program activities targeted 1) teaching diverse learners, 2) inquiry and active-learning pedagogies, and 3) strengthening content knowledge. When the climate in education changed nationally mid-grant, activities to explicitly address culturally-relevant practices were developed. Since this emphasis was not directly addressed in the grant evaluation, here the use of student teaching evaluations as a tool to assess preparation in culturally-relevant practices is explored. Although some distinctions between Noyce …

Shifting Beliefs About The Teaching Of Reading: Teacher Candidates’ Responses To The Book Whisperer, Kathleen M. Crawford, Michelle Reidel

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In this document analysis, the authors explored if and how Miller’s (2009) The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child served as a symbolic model of a reading teacher who teaches her students not just the technical aspects of reading, but also how to enjoy reading. Drawing on social learning theory, the authors investigated how the selected text connected to elementary preservice teachers’ personal reading experiences with reading and learning to read, their preexisting beliefs about teaching reading, and their current observations of reading instruction in field placements. Written reflections, which served as the data source for this …

Learning To Teach: Narratives And Counter-Narratives About Preservice Teachers, Meenakshi Sharma Aug 2022

Learning To Teach: Narratives And Counter-Narratives About Preservice Teachers, Meenakshi Sharma

Georgia Educational Researcher

The present article analyzes two critical frameworks within teacher education and how they construct preservice teachers and their learning within teacher education. These frameworks of 'Apprenticeship of Observation' (AoO) and 'Ambitious Practice' (AP) present opposing narratives about preservice teachers. While AoO directs our attention to preservice teachers' belief, AP emphasizes on developing professional practices that are core to the work of teaching. Teacher educators draw on these frameworks and narratives to inform their work with preservice teachers . Each framework has its unique stance on preservice teachers and makes noteworthy contributions that expand the field teacher education and evolve our …

"The Ghost Of Freire Is In My Kitchen Now": Dominant Ideology And Critical Possibility In Teachers' Dialogue On Pedagogy Of The Oppressed, Hope A. Kitts Aug 2022

"The Ghost Of Freire Is In My Kitchen Now": Dominant Ideology And Critical Possibility In Teachers' Dialogue On Pedagogy Of The Oppressed, Hope A. Kitts

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Critical scholars in sociology, philosophy and cultural studies have long said what is wrong with schools, insofar as they function to perpetuate inequality rather than social uplift, generally. Despite this well-researched state of affairs, schooling—of the State-sponsored, public education kind—remains beholden to the economic interests of the dominant classes. Judging from current retention and attrition rates, proficiency levels, and college entrance numbers, schooling has continued to disproportionately benefit White people, especially in relation to their social class. Moreover teachers continue to be disproportionately White and female when compared with their students. Through a critical analysis of teachers’ discourse on Freire, …

Consciousness To Teach Bilingual Education In The Borderlands: Pláticas With Latina Teacher Candidates, Helena Muciño Guerra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Despite the 3.9 million Latinx emergent bilinguals (EB) across U.S. classrooms (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2019), most bilingual teachers are White monolinguals (Cochran-Smith et al., 2016). Literature on teacher preparation in bilingual education (BE) has shown that due to the shared identities and origin and similar schooling experiences with their Latinx students, Latinx bilingual teacher candidates have a personal commitment to improving their studentsâ?? educational opportunities (Cervantes-Soon, 2018). Yet, most research on teacher preparation in bilingual education has been conducted in predominantly White-monolingual contexts, using Eurocentric research methodologies and methods, disregarding how the past educational experiences of Latinx inform …

Language Ideologies In First Year Composition Textbooks, Joanna Clevenger Aug 2022

Language Ideologies In First Year Composition Textbooks, Joanna Clevenger

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This thesis examines how standard language ideologies are perpetuated in the five most frequently assigned first year composition textbooks from four higher education institutions in Southern California’s Inland Empire. Standard language ideologies position one variation of a language as superior, correct, appropriate and the normal variation of a language which everyone should be able to speak. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, the five textbooks were analyzed in order to uncover the embedded power and hegemony over women, people of color, and those from a lower socioeconomic status which are prevalent throughout society because they are unchallenged and widely accepted as the …

Equitable Counselor Education: Promoting A Sense Of Belonging In Master's Counseling Students, Jessica E. Mastrangelo Aug 2022

Equitable Counselor Education: Promoting A Sense Of Belonging In Master's Counseling Students, Jessica E. Mastrangelo

Dissertations, 2020-current

The discrepancies in racial and ethnic demographics between counselors, counselor educators, and the clients they seek to serve are prominent (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs [CACREP], 2018). Mental health counseling and the field of psychology have a traditionally Eurocentric value system that has positioned the White population to benefit from services and to become clinicians. As such, the centering of the White experience has perpetuated a lack of diversity in the field. As the demographics of the United States population continues to diversify, counseling needs to produce a greater number of racially and ethnically minoritized counselors …
