Focus Attracts Attachment, Kathryn Carlson, David Potter

There is growing evidence that pitch accents as well as prosodic boundaries can affect syntactic attachment. But is this an effect of their perceptual salience (the Salience Hypothesis), or is it because accents mark the position of focus (the Focus Attraction Hypothesis)? A pair of auditory comprehension experiments shows that focus position, as indicated by preceding wh-questions instead of by pitch accents, affects attachment by drawing the ambiguous phrase to the focus. This supports the Focus Attraction Hypothesis (or a pragmatic version of salience) for both these results and previous results of accents on attachment. These experiments show that information …

This thesis addresses the essential researched-based components of effective bullying intervention programs in K-12 schools. It provides an overview of bullying which includes; a definition, types of bullying, bullying motivation, and the effects that bullying has on adolescents. The thesis also identifies risk factors that are associated with bullying victimization, as well as risk factors associated with becoming a bully. These risk factors support the need for bullying intervention programs. This paper addresses the following question: How does student perception of teacher appearance, age, and community connection affect student achievement in the classroom? Literature from ERIC, EBSCO, Google Scholar, National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Sage Journals, and the Gutman Library at the Harvard Graduate School of Education was reviewed for international academic studies published between 1960-2021. A variety of qualitative and quantitative research was considered from elementary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions. This paper examines the state of the Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) education system in the United States at the K-12 level. The approach to this research first demonstrates the importance of Chinese language expertise to the United States government as well as to private citizens in light of economic opportunities and national security interests. This paper explores the relationship between homework and academic achievement in the areas of homework time, parental involvement and home support, and teacher ideation and student conceptualization. The findings of 30 academic articles were analyzed and compiled into literature reviews. All relevant findings were categorized based upon their association to three areas. One, time spent on homework was positively correlated with student academic achievement. Two, parental involvement in a supportive home environment had significant impacts on achievement and homework completion. The purpose of this literature review was to investigate the effectiveness of common curriculum initiatives in mathematics in the United States. First, the study examined the effects of these initiatives on the rates of students’ math anxiety. Second, the study evaluated policies related to curriculum requirements for their effectiveness in improving test scores, closing racial and socioeconomic gaps, and course failure rates. Specific policies were the effectiveness of mandating Algebra 2 and the implementation of Algebra 1 for all eighth-grade students. The current study aims to investigate whether the instructional approach (flipped or traditional) and gender (male or female) influence students’ sense of autonomy, relatedness, and competence, or influence their achievements in high school chemistry. Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction theory was used to design the flipped classroom (FC) implemented in this study as recommended by Lo, Lie, and Hew in 2018. Teacher action research has been shown to both promote professional growth in teachers as well as produce gains for students. However, to date, little research has examined how action research might contribute to systemic changes in schools and school districts. This qualitative study of six teachers from various districts, subject areas, and grade levels, illustrates how action research can have simultaneous impacts on teachers, their students, and their schools and districts. Many incoming college freshmen who do not meet minimum standardized exam cut-score requirements are often determined to be not ready for college-level coursework and registered for pre-requisite, multi-semester, remedial course sequences. The goal of pre-requisite courses is to prepare students for college-level courses prior to enrollment in college-level classes. However, based on multiple studies, traditional, pre-requisite developmental education has become a barrier to student success. Complex career decisions, such as teacher mobility, are often reduced to stigmatizing labels that do little to account for the state of teaching as a profession or credit those engaging in migratory decisions as making healthy career choices. Through our study, we focused on understanding workforce mobility, teaching as an unstaged profession, and the current quantifications existing around SBAE teacher migration. We drew on over 100 years of data from California as we quantitatively explored and synthesized the career decisions of migrating SBAE teachers. The Government of Vanuatu is undertaking significant primary education reforms, including major curriculum changes, to improve equitable access to and the quality of education. Since 2016, a new primary education curriculum has been introduced by stages, accompanied by a suite of in-service teacher training. The new curriculum promotes teaching practices that support new pedagogies focused on student-centred learning and community support, language transition and class-based assessment practices. With the teacher turnover rate at an alarmingly high incline in the United States, this project seeks to reveal the lack of support that first-year teachers experience during their first year of teaching in the United States. First, this paper examines the history of teacher training in the United States and how the historical context has shaped teacher training today. This research report is on fostering young children's metacognitive skills. The study was conducted at a private early childhood education center in a Midwestern city in 2020. The design of the study was a mixed approach including Time Series experimentation naturalistic observation and interviews. Children aged 3-4 years were exposed in alternate weeks to pre-read-aloud prompts which engaged them in their own thinking about the story that was about to be read to them. A Comparison Of Self-Reported Anxiety And Depression Among Undergraduate Music Majors And Nonmusic Majors, Danni Gilbert

The purpose of this exploratory research study was to compare anxiety and depression levels reported by music majors and nonmajors at a small, private liberal arts university. Study participants completed the Burns Anxiety Inventory and Burns Depression Checklist. Anxiety and depression levels were significantly higher among music majors, and there was a strong, positive relationship between anxiety and depression. Regardless of major, self-reports were not affected by year in school. Implications for additional mental health resources and strategies for improving music major health and self-care are discussed, along with a need for increased music faculty awareness of perceived anxiety and …
