Basic communication courses (BCCs) are evolving, and technology is a driver of this change. Guided by self-efficacy theory, this study examined the use of virtual reality speaking rehearsals as one technology that instructors can adopt to enhance students’ public speaking efficacy. Students (N = 32) in this study practiced their final informative speeches in virtual reality 360-degree videos. They perceived their efficacy was enhanced in five ways including preparedness, realism, self-awareness, feedback, and comfort level. Conversely, efficacy inhibitors included the lack of presentational aids, technology issues, and lack of audience realism. The results are used to provide practical advice …

The ePortfolio as a High Impact Practice (HIP) was implemented to Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) course in Kinesiology during Winter 2020. Preservice physical education teachers enrolled in the course (i.e., KINE473 - Instructional Strategies for Physical Education) were required to create an individual ePortfolio, a framework for individual learning experiences to collect and compile evidences of learning experiences in the course of PETE program. A modified model of legibility vis-a-vis salon session was adapted for use my class, immediately, after attending the conference. Also, I took two students from my Winter Quarter class (Anth 301, Anthropological Theory) to the conference held that Spring Quarter 2019. They presented their research papers completed in Anth 301. The National Conference on Higher Education in Prison (NCHEP) is one of the largest gatherings of prison educators in the country. Over the course of four days, the NCHEP featured workshops that examine the best practices in prison education. I attended workshops on starting higher education in prison programs, fundraising and grant writing, strategic planning, fostering collaborative learning, using technology in the prison classroom, handling the emotional challenges of teaching in prison, and meeting accreditation standards.

Twenty-two high leverage practices (HLPs) specific to special educators have been identified by CEEDAR/CEC. We surveyed multiple stakeholders to determine which HLPs were most critical for preservice teachers to learn. Findings indicated overlap among stakeholders. The two most consistently endorsed HLPs were collaboration among professionals and establishing the learning environment.

Problem behaviors in the classroom can negatively impact all students in that particular setting, and result in work-related stress and reduced well-being for teachers. Knowledge of classroom management strategies has great importance for middle and secondary teachers. The present research aims to consolidate findings on evidence-based, proactive classroom management strategies for adolescents that can be effectively used by middle and high school teachers of all experience levels. Results suggest that relationship building, antecedent attention, positive verbal feedback, opportunities to respond, proactive discipline, and parental involvement increase engagement and decrease disruptive behavior in middle and secondary classrooms. Veteran, new, and preservice teachers should evaluate and update their classroom management strategies to reflect current, evidence-based practices.

This literature review examines the background of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and the impact trauma has on adolescents’ ability to learn. Brain development, brain function, and ACEs’ impact on adolescent brains are also addressed in this review. Past research has shown that ACEs and the effect of trauma on adults are long-lasting, but more research has been conducted to understand the considerable impact trauma has on children and adolescents.
