Critical Awareness Of Media And Teacher Education: An Experience With Colombian Elt Pre-Service Teachers, Camilo Dominguez

Media texts are exponentially displayed in physical and virtual public spaces and their impact on humanity is unimaginable. Teachers of all fields face the challenge and the responsibility to educate sensitive humans able to critically consume or produce media messages. English language teachers are no exception. In this paper, the author describes a qualitative research study exploring how a group of Colombian pre-service English teachers developed critical awareness of media as they deconstructed advertisements displayed in the public spaces of their rather rural communities. Findings, conclusions, implications for teacher education, and new questions for further research are presented.

The purpose of this qualitative, ethnographic case study was to explore how teachers and teacher support personnel internalize and implement the tenets and strategies associated with professional development on culturally responsive pedagogy to gain a better understanding of the role professional development has in educational decision making. Data were collected data from a group of teachers and support staff who attended cultural competency training and who received subsequent mentoring. The geologic method of stratigraphy which studies the structure of the earth by making layers was employed with 3D laser cutting techniques to make more easily defined tactile regions in templates of cells, tissues and anatomic regions containing muscles and bones. Templates were made audio responsive by hand-drilling a small hole in a template and filling that hole with conductive electric paint. A finger touch to the template top side now carries a charge similar to an electric circuit to the template bottom side resting on the surface of an iPad or iPad Pro where an audio button produces audio …

Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe and explain middle school administrators’, teachers’, and coordinators’ observations and knowledge of the effect of service-learning on students’ personal growth, social growth, and civic engagement.

Methodology: This phenomenological qualitative study based its findings on in-depth interviews, transcripts, and participant artifacts. Six middle school administrators and eight teachers, and coordinators located in Tulare County, California utilizing service-learning in the 2017-2018 school year, or prior, were interviewed. The use of person first language when working with people with disabilities is important for building successful relationships, particularly for educators. Thus, the purposes of this investigation were to determine: (1) how a podcast intervention impacts undergraduate students’ use of person-first language when discussing people with disabilities, and (2) undergraduate students’ perceptions about podcasts as a tool for learning. Forty-three undergraduate education majors participated in this study. To participate in this study, they had to first complete a demographics survey and a pretest on person-first language. Using Dörnyei’s (2005) L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) and Kubanyiova’s (2007, 2009) model of ‘possible language teacher selves’ as main theoretical frameworks, this multiple case study explored four language teaching assistants’ developmental patterns with regards to their ideal language teacher selves over a two-year period. It also examined the challenges and limitations that these TAs faced, as well as the institutional support that they received over time. The data sources from this study included semi-structured interviews, class observations, and student artifacts (teaching philosophies, ideal teacher selves and observation reflections). Literacy coaching is not new to education. Since the 2001 shift in the United States (U.S.) educational policy towards high-quality teacher training, accountability, and student achievement, literacy or reading coach positions have been a core part of the educational institution (U. S. Department of Education, 2003). However, with undefined coaching roles and inadequate coach training early in the initiative, minimal impact on effective teacher development and instructional shifts towards closing the achievement gap occurred (Dole, 2003; International Reading Association, 2004).
