Everyday Advocacy As Part Of Everyday Professionalism, Cathy A. Fleischer, Alaina Feliks, Melissa Brooks-Yip, Sarah Andrew-Vaughan
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
What would happen if we began to see advocacy as part of teachers’ professional identity, as an integral part of who we all are as teachers—not just in moments of crisis, but every day? This article demonstrates how three teachers have made everyday advocacy part of their identity after participating in advocacy training, by exploring the action plans they created surrounding issues of concern in their local contexts.
Advocating For The Affective: Writing Hope Into School Spaces, Nicole Sieben
Advocating For The Affective: Writing Hope Into School Spaces, Nicole Sieben
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
Several scholars in the field of English education advocate for student voice and emotion to take precedence in our English language arts (ELA) classrooms. Because emotions are inextricably tied to learning processes (Smagorinsky, 2017), we know that we cannot effectively teach English language arts unless we consider the affective components of our students’ educational experiences. When students are given opportunities to access the deepest parts of themselves, they can then begin to unpack their full potentials as critical readers, writers, and thinkers in the world. This piece provides several frameworks and strategies for teaching with affective advocacy in mind in …

Teaching Peer Feedback As Ethical Practice, Derek Miller, Troy Hicks, Susan Golab
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
Even with weeks of building a classroom community and deliberate instructional scaffolding, students may not engage in thoughtful peer review. One teacher discovers how he must place a deep, intentional value on the feedback itself—and the writers who provided it to one another.

When You See It: Intersections Of Formal And Informal Science Learning, Cristina A. Trowbridge
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I examine the role of out-of-school learning environments in the development of new science teachers. The context for the research is the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, specifically; the first two-year post-graduation new teacher induction. This manuscript style dissertation documents various aspects of using the museum and other out-of-school learning experiences in new teacher induction as well as illuminating how graduates of the program use the museum and its resources in their classroom. The first museum teacher residency program in the United States, this study advances our understanding of …
Family–School Partnerships And The Missing Voice Of Parents, Laura R. Stein
Family–School Partnerships And The Missing Voice Of Parents, Laura R. Stein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Educators, researchers, advocates, and others agree that effective family-school partnership is an important component in best supporting the academic outcomes and future success of students. However, schools and educators struggle in forming constructive partnerships with racially and economically marginalized and oppressed parents and families, particularly low-income Black parents and families. This compromises support for low-income Black students that are already served in underfunded and under-resourced schools compared to their White middleclass counterparts. Further, this phenomenon exacerbates a widely understood academic achievement gap between low-income Black students and White middleclass students. In seeking to unearth and better understand effective strategies and …
Using Authentic Inquiry To Unpack Emotions And Thorny Issues Within Teaching And Learning, Leah Denise Pride
Using Authentic Inquiry To Unpack Emotions And Thorny Issues Within Teaching And Learning, Leah Denise Pride
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This manuscript-styled dissertation embodies the theoretical and methodological framework of authentic inquiry (Tobin, 2006). In the holistic context of this dissertation, authentic inquiry as a theoretical framework encompasses deep epistemological and ontological questions such as: What is knowledge and how is it informed by research? Who may engage in research? How does positivism compare to authentic inquiry? What are thorny issues and how do they relate to authentic inquiry? How do we research thorny issues in classrooms? What mindfulness practices may be used to research emotions when discussing thorny issues? How do we nuance “safety” in learning spaces where emotions …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a compilation of studies, on emotions in teaching and learning. My experiences as a teacher and student of physics have informed my perspective. These experiences as well as my role as a science teacher educator have contributed to my transformations. My work is interpretative and impressionistic. I attempt to address what is happening and why it is happening through my own interpretation, participant reflections, heuristic responses and dialogue with participants. My research community has also informed this work, as well as the preservice and inservice teachers that have participated in each of the studies. I consider this …

State Of Mind : A Poststructural Analysis Of Governmentality And Teacher Education Professionalism Using Policy Texts, Todd A. Bates
State Of Mind : A Poststructural Analysis Of Governmentality And Teacher Education Professionalism Using Policy Texts, Todd A. Bates
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This dissertation comprises a multilayered inquiry into the complex interplay between governance and teacher education. It adopts Goodlad’s (1990/1994) stance that teacher education best serves democratic society when it is self-governing and maintains decision-making authority with respect to the preparation of teachers. However, pervasive and prescriptive state and federal policies create a regulatory context that supplants the ability of teacher educators to exercise authority over fundamental aspects of their work, including the identification, recruitment, preparation, and assessment of future teachers.
Bacchi and Goodwin (2016) argue that prevailing educational policy critiques underexamine governmentalities—mindsets that render individuals and societies governable (Foucault, 2007). …

Success Rates Of Second Semester Anatomy Students In Online And On-Ground Classes At A Community College In East Tennessee, William Sproat
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Educators expect the number of institutions offering online courses and the number of students enrolling in these courses to increase as many students, particularly nontraditional students, discover the advantages of online content delivery. Online courses require new methods of communication between students and faculty as well as discovering new ways to build relationships, earn student trust, conduct appropriate assessment, and deliver useful course content. Many institutions—public, private, and for-profit—offer a wide variety of online coursework but faculty, employers, and the public have expressed concerns about the quality of online course content. In particular, online delivery of coursework in the natural …

New Criticism—Not So New To Tennessee’S High School English Teachers, Seth Grindstaff
New Criticism—Not So New To Tennessee’S High School English Teachers, Seth Grindstaff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When Tennessee Department of Education adopted Common Core in 2010, Tennessee implemented New Critical ideas associated with the college classroom, but did not present this connection to English teachers. Comparing high school education reforms like A Nation at Risk (1983) and TNCore to the New Critical works of Cleanth Brooks, T. S. Eliot, John Crowe Ransom, Robert Penn Warren, William Wimsatt and Monroe Beardsley, reveals that New Criticism is the literary method grounding current ELA education reform. Referencing Deborah Appleman’s Critical Encounters in Secondary English (2015), Diana Ravitch’s The Death and Life of the Great American School System (2010), and …

Preservice Agricultural Education Teachers And Secondary Education Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Professional Identity, Hailey Gates
Preservice Agricultural Education Teachers And Secondary Education Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Professional Identity, Hailey Gates
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
During the nineteenth century, a decision was made to separate the preparation of agricultural education teachers from their elementary and secondary counterparts (Hearings, 1908; Heren & Hillison, 1996; Hillison, 1986). The majority of land-grant universities and colleges have continued to prepare agricultural education preservice teachers within the college of agriculture, separate from other secondary education preservice teachers in the college of education (Myers & Dyer, 2004). Despite the differences among content disciplines, teachers who possess a strong sense of self-efficacy and professional identity have higher success rates in the classroom when it comes to collaboration, involvement, and student achievement (Ashton …

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
According to recent research, teachers contribute to around 30% of the overall variation in student achievement and success – more than any other influencing factor. This study seeks to understand how different types of incentives (monetary, near monetary and non-monetary incentives) influence the “effort” of public school teachers in Lagos, Nigeria using a novel measurement tool – the teaching effectiveness survey – to measure the teachers’ outcomes. Using a randomized control trial where students evaluate the changes in their teachers’ effort with a standard teaching effectiveness survey and differences in differences estimation, we show how incentives could potentially improve (or …
