Employing Word Study With Spanish-Speaking Els, Timothy Rodriquez
Employing Word Study With Spanish-Speaking Els, Timothy Rodriquez
ECTESOL Review
Phonics Instruction has had a controversial history. How to teach phonics to Spanish-speaking ELs is also controversial. Understanding the differences between Spanish and English and how phonics instruction occurs in each language would be insightful. Also, knowing how the nature of the two languages affects instruction would be beneficial. Furthermore, exploiting similarities between English and Spanish and examining differences will bolster instruction. This paper will discuss the reasons for word study and how it may be utilized to teach spelling and decoding to Spanish-speaking ELLs.
Context-Focused Grammar Teaching: A Comparison Between English Present Perfect And Past Tenses And Affects On Korean English Learning, Seungheui (Ellie) Lee
Context-Focused Grammar Teaching: A Comparison Between English Present Perfect And Past Tenses And Affects On Korean English Learning, Seungheui (Ellie) Lee
ECTESOL Review
Despite massive amounts of time Korean English Learners (KLL) study English grammar, they continue to have problems becoming proficient in verb tenses, especially the present perfect. This study examines this problem through a linguistic comparative analysis of Korean and English present perfect and past tenses. Two possible reasons for KLL difficulty with verb tenses could be mode of instruction and L1 interference.
Not “One China,” Not “One Culture”: Multicultural Exploration Of Differences And Similarities Between Mainland China And Taiwan, Philip J. Ward, Michelle Loo
Not “One China,” Not “One Culture”: Multicultural Exploration Of Differences And Similarities Between Mainland China And Taiwan, Philip J. Ward, Michelle Loo
ECTESOL Review
This study focuses on the outwardly similar cultures of Taiwan and mainland China and the subtle differences within them. The study was conducted as part of the requirements of doctoral program in Instructional Design and Development at a public university in the southeastern United States. Using a qualitative case study approach, the study demonstrates that there are cultural similarities between mainland China and Taiwan, however instructors should also be aware of the differences when developing relationships with students and developing course content. A mini-workshop was developed for the study to help teach instructors about the two cultures. However, the mini-workshop …

Investigating Nce Preservice Candidates And Graduates’ Visual Literacy Practices In Middle And High School Science And Social Studies Classrooms, Xiaoning Chen, Mark Newman, Vito M. Dipinto
NCE Research Residencies
The study investigates whether secondary education science and social studies candidates transferred what they learned about visual literacy in their teacher preparation program to their practicum/student teaching classrooms. The study included qualitative and quantitative methods to document the candidates’ visual literacy knowledge and practices. The findings indicate that the candidates did employ visual literacy strategies as visuals had already been regularly used in their classrooms. But, they had limited success in implementing the strategies learned in their methods courses. In addition, they showed a good working knowledge of what visual literacy is and acknowledged its value in the classroom. They …
The Perceived Efficacy Of Tier I Intervention Strategies As A Precursor To Tier Ii Pull-Out Mathematics Intervention For Students With Add/Adhd By Elementary Classroom Teachers, Dawn Campbell
EDL Sixth Year Theses
The core purpose of this study was to provide insight to the staff at Orchard Hill Elementary School in South Windsor, Connecticut into effective ways to address the challenges that students with ADHD face in the math classroom. By first identifying which research-based instructional strategies and behavior interventions are being used, as well as the perceived efficacy of the strategies and interventions by those implementing them day-to-day, the school community could begin to understand the efficacy of Tier I intervention for students with ADHD and identify potential needs for further research or professional development or capitalize on successful strategies and …
A Cooperating Teacher, A Supervisor, And A Critical Confidant: The Journey Moving Toward A New Model Of Support For Student Teachers, Christina C. Pfister, Sophia Paljevic
A Cooperating Teacher, A Supervisor, And A Critical Confidant: The Journey Moving Toward A New Model Of Support For Student Teachers, Christina C. Pfister, Sophia Paljevic
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
Extensive research has found that student teaching is a challenging experience for pre-service teachers (PSTs). This paper proposes a new model for the student teaching experience where PSTs have a cooperating teacher, supervisor, and also a special mentor called a Critical Confidant. We collected survey data over the course of three consecutive semesters to determine PST’s perceptions. Results indicate that PSTs found having a Critical Confidant to be an overwhelmingly positive experience. PSTs felt safe because of the non-evaluative Critical Confidant role. They appreciated support from someone who had more experience but who was not yet an expert teacher. Implications …
Surveying Educations Professionals To Explore How To Incorporate Trauma Education In Ucf's Teach Preparation Program, Jordan Doman
Surveying Educations Professionals To Explore How To Incorporate Trauma Education In Ucf's Teach Preparation Program, Jordan Doman
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Traumatic events do not discriminate based on economic status, race, culture, or age. This is true for the hundreds of thousands of students who walk into classrooms every day having experienced trauma. Our teachers are then challenged to support these students in a time when their ability to learn may be affected by trauma.
The goal of my thesis is to show the need to educate preservice teachers in the University of Central Florida's elementary education teacher preparation program about students experiencing trauma and how to best support these students. By analyzing existing literature and through interviews with professionals working …
Proposal For Implementing The Flipped Learning Method In Dentistry English, Zumrut Cassidy
Proposal For Implementing The Flipped Learning Method In Dentistry English, Zumrut Cassidy
MA TESOL Collection
In traditional teaching, the information is given to the students in the class by the lecturer through different sources. The digestion of the information is done by the students at home. Therefore, the time that is allocated for the production and the practice of the taught subject becomes limited. Yes, "flipped learning" changes that totally. The idea behind it is schoolwork at home and homework in class. This study seeks to find out what flipped learning contributes to learning and how it deals with boosting the students' autonomy. In the flipped learning way of teaching, students are supposed to take …
Revisiting The Rural Superintendency: Rethinking Guiding Theories For Contemporary Practice, Erin Mchenry-Sorber, Kathleen Budge
Revisiting The Rural Superintendency: Rethinking Guiding Theories For Contemporary Practice, Erin Mchenry-Sorber, Kathleen Budge
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This conceptual article challenges researchers and practitioners to reconsider the utility of current constructs used to understand the rural school superintendency. We evaluate the rural leadership literature through two waves of scholarship: insider/outsider conceptions and place-conscious/critical place-conscious constructs. We assert critical place-conscious leadership as potentially responsive to contemporary rural realities, but we provide a number of revisions for theoretical development to increase applicability to the realities of the rural superintendency in practice in the early part of the twenty-first century.
Fostering Democratic Patriotism Through Critical Pedagogy, Hillary Parkhouse
Fostering Democratic Patriotism Through Critical Pedagogy, Hillary Parkhouse
Teaching and Learning Publications
When I was a high school US history teacher in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, I sometimes wondered about the relationship between patriotism and critique of one’s nation. Specifically, I questioned just how critical students could be without becoming disaffected toward the United States. I tried to be honest with my students about the nation’s mixed record of democracy—how the country was founded on ideals of equality and yet stole land from Native Americans, kidnapped millions of Africans as part of a massive system of chattel slavery, and denied the vote to women until 1920. But I …
Vocational Development Of Introverted College Students, Alex T. Crist
Vocational Development Of Introverted College Students, Alex T. Crist
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
While vocation is an increasingly popular research topic, research has not addressed how one’s personality shapes his or her vocational development. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to explore the vocational development of introverted college students. Using a two-part qualitative study, 101 participants provided online essays and nine participants participated in face-to-face interviews to understand the influences and process of introverts seeking to discover their vocation. Results suggested various external and internal influences of vocational development, as well as the perceived relationship between vocation and introversion. Based on the results of the study, the Vocational Development Model for Introverts …
The Teaching And Learning International Survey 2018: Australian Non-Response Bias Analysis Report, Katherine Dix, Toby Carslake, Elizabeth O'Grady
The Teaching And Learning International Survey 2018: Australian Non-Response Bias Analysis Report, Katherine Dix, Toby Carslake, Elizabeth O'Grady
OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)
This non-response bias analysis (NRBA) report was produced due to lower than expected response rates for Australian primary and secondary schools and teachers to the 2018 Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) surveys. Analysis demonstrates that Australia’s International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) 1 (primary) and 2 (secondary) respondents are representative of the broader school and teacher populations. At the school-level, there was no statistically significant bias across stratification variables between the ISCED 1 and 2 participating schools and original selected samples.
Feedback In The Lesson Observation Process: What Guides A Teacher Towards Development, Lina Kerbelyte
Feedback In The Lesson Observation Process: What Guides A Teacher Towards Development, Lina Kerbelyte
MA TESOL Collection
Lesson observation is a very common practice all over the world. However, rarely does it look at personal and interpersonal aspects that are needed in feedback in order to develop autonomous and successful teachers. This thesis does not look deeper into what constitutes a good lesson, nor what methods are most suitable for students. Instead, it seeks to look deeper into the phenomenon of lesson observation feedback through the eyes of a teacher in order to see what aspects of lesson observation are useful and guide educators towards their development. What does a teacher need in order to find feedback …
Curricular Agency: Contemplating Curriculum As A Process To Empower Teachers, Matthew L. Spurlin
Curricular Agency: Contemplating Curriculum As A Process To Empower Teachers, Matthew L. Spurlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using the qualitative method of Educational Connoisseurship and Criticism (Eisner, 1991) and an interview structure based on the commonplaces (Schwab, 1969), this study involved working with four exemplary teacher educators to externalize their internal process of curricular decision-making. Contemplating their own curricula as a dynamic process rather than a finished product, the study identifies where in that process their curricular agency—their educational agency, and their human agency (Bandura, 2006)—is found. This operationalization of curricular agency within curricular theory provides an empowering perspective of teacher-centered education as a response to teacher burnout.
Effective And Interactive Group Assignments In An Online Course, Teresa Focarile, Lana Grover
Effective And Interactive Group Assignments In An Online Course, Teresa Focarile, Lana Grover
CTL Teaching Gallery
The current standard paradigm for online learning involves asynchronous learning. We propose to expand that paradigm to include synchronous elements to the general course design, specifically cooperative learning (CL). Cooperative learning in any classroom, traditional or online, must include a synchronous event: all members are present at the same time in the same space. A synchronous form of online CL simulates face-to-face interaction available in a live classroom but conducted through screen-to-screen communication. The inclusion of synchronous components carries the benefit of increased student engagement and community-building, thereby maximizing the potential for student learning and successful completion.

As faculty, we have a unique opportunity to help students navigate conversations about diversity in a way that leads to deeper understanding, greater empathy, and hopefully, social action. However, such productive dialogue takes careful planning, preparation, and guidance on the part of the instructor. Below, we offer specific strategies faculty can use before, during, and after difficult dialogue about diversity in the classroom setting.
Faculty Development – The Critical Element, Deborah J. Seepersaud
Faculty Development – The Critical Element, Deborah J. Seepersaud
FDLA Journal
Faculty development is a complex idea, often misunderstood, but not at the University of Mississippi where the key to faculty development is clear – instructional design is the critical element of faculty development. Instructional design and instructional designers are considered necessary to quality online education. Instructional designers are involved in all aspects of faculty development from first efforts of professors to ongoing strategies for course enrichment.
An organization’s commitment to quality online education can probably be determined by asking one question – what is the institution’s level of commitment to appropriate and research-based instructional design strategies?

All Roads Lead To Online Teaching Excellence: An Alternative Route To Faculty Certification For Online Teaching, Nancy Swenson, Shelly Wyatt Phd
FDLA Journal
New faculty who arrive at the University of Central Florida are very likely to be asked to teach at least one online (“W”) or mixed-mode (“M”) course. Realizing that effective teaching in these digital formats requires additional skills and knowledge that go beyond the traditional face-to-face classroom, UCF requires faculty to be certified in online teaching. Faculty at UCF have two avenues to obtain certification to develop and teach online or mixed-mode courses: our online teaching certification course IDL6543 or our alternative track for experienced faculty new to UCF called Online Faculty Readiness Assessment (OFRA). This assessment recognizes a faculty …

Failing Better: Scaffolding Learning With The Metaliteracy Badging System, Kelsey L. O'Brien
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
The Metaliteracy Badging System, collaboratively produced by educators from across the State University of New York (SUNY), has undergone several trials and transformations. Over the course of this iterative journey, this resource has served in often-unexpected ways as a flexible educational tool that facilitates meaningful curriculum design and collaborative teaching. This chapter provides an overview of the design and implementation of the system, along with our challenges and goals moving forward. Just as we teach our students to fail better, we too have drawn on our setbacks as opportunities for growth and improvement.

We argue that U.S. sociologists have been woefully remiss in incorporating the climate crisis into our research agendas and even more, into our teaching. After laying out the gravity of the situation we issue a call for sociologists to consider whether they wish to continue this striking denial of responsibility to our students and to knowledge production. We then present four ways that we have infused our understanding of climate change, climate crisis, and climate justice into courses on global issues, social movements, inequality, and much more. We believe that “climate justice” – the key concept that drives our concern …
