Parental education plays an important link for intergenerational mobility. Parental education is, of course, one aspect of family background that influences children’s subsequent achievement as adults. The general view is that the higher educated parents provide adequate environment, which facilitates their children’s opportunities for educational attainments. There is also a positive relationship between parental education, especially mother’s education, and educational attainment of children. Corwyn and Bradely (2002) found that maternal education had the most consistent direct influence on children’s cognitive and behavioural outcomes with some indirect influence through a cognitively stimulating home environment.

The purpose of this research was to determine if the variables included in the Mississippi Report Card utilized for the calculation of AYP can be used to predict whether or not Mississippi LEAs will attain adequate yearly progress in reading and math using the logistic regression technique. This study demonstrated that using the variables utilized for the calculation of AYP, a predictive model can be successfully utilized to classify Mississippi LEAs that will and will not attain AYP in reading and math with an accuracy greater than that which can be attributed to chance.

This paper seeks to increase the growing body of knowledge relative to the “accompanying characteristics” or attendant attributes of caring (submissiveness, sacrifice, the ability to individualize, and being able to anticipate the needs of others). It also offers are four unique philosophical underpinnings of the attribute of caring. These dimensions include the reciprocal nature of caring, the hierarchical nature of caring, the requirement to be pro-active in caring, and being knowledgeable about the changing timetable of caring in people’s lives. This study examined the reading of fiction and nonfiction text by second grade readers. A comparison of their reading processes, comprehension, and perceptions are highlighted. The study was conducted given the changing demands of reading in the 21st century and the current literacy experiences typically presented in elementary schools.
