Pre-Matrix Balancing Of Challenging Chemical Equations With A Simple Formula Register And Middle School Arithmetic, L. Hutchings, L. Peterson, A. Almasude

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This paper describes a procedure employing basic relational concepts (analogous to certain matrix algebra concepts), but structured by a simple formula register and using only middle school arithmetic to balance chemical equations ranging from easy to moderate to difficult redox reactions. This procedure allows average students and below average students to experience ready success in balancing, thus avoiding a traditional source of frustration and failure which might contribute to their losing interest in chemistry. One interesting serendipity of this procedure is how quickly it turns able pre-matrix students into extremely fast and accurate balaneers.

Into The Fray: Novice Teachers Tackle Standards-Based Mathematics, B. Schroder, S. Gningue

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This article tracks twenty-one graduates of a refom-based mathematics teacher education program for two years as they begin teaching mathematics in public elementary schools in New York City. Using surveys, classroom observations, and interviews, it examines the extent to which these beginning teachers were able to implement standards-based mathematics instruction in their classes. Results of the study were mixed. The novice teachers generally demonstrated an adequate understanding of the underlying mathematics principles and strong intentions of teaching mathematics for understanding.They were generally able to engage children in learning, and most performed at the “beginning stages of effective instruction” in their …

Field-based program of studies for future teachers provides opportunities for powerful learning through a dialectical union of reflection and action. Methods courses in academic disciplines are linked with seminars and coursework on community partnerships, critical pedagogy and culturally responsive education. This article illustrates the processes of planning, implementation and evaluation of this approach, highlighting the impacts of community service learning on parents, families, students, and schools with a focus on validating native language literacy, increasing parental involvement and providing conceptually correct science education. The Effect Of Comic Books On Students' Reading Attitudes, Sheila Lambert

An experimental study was conducted to determine if the addition of comic books as self-selected reading material in the classroom improved students' attitudes toward recreational reading. Sixth grade students (n=62) completed the first ten items that address recreational reading from the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (McKenna & Kear, 1990) as a pre- and post-test. The students in the experimental group (n=35) had comic books available in their sixth grade language arts classroom libraries during free classroom reading periods. Comic books were not available in the language arts classroom libraries for the sixth grade students in the control group (n=27). Students …

In this article, I write about my research on five preservice secondary teachers’ (PST) understanding and sense making of representational quantities associated with magnetic color cubes and tiles. Data came from individual interviews during which I asked PST problems guided by five main tasks: prime and composite numbers, summation of counting numbers, odd numbers, even numbers, and polynomial expressions in x and y. My work drew upon an analysis framework (Behr et. al, 1994) supported by a unit coordination construct (Steffe, 1988) associated with linear and areal quantities inherent in the nature of figures produced by these PST. With Playhouse interns coming from a variety of learning and teaching backgrounds, it occurred to me that there was a need for training that introduces all of these new, young teachers to working with all groups of students, grades K-12, in the theatre. Thus, I have created Lights Up!, a resource stripped of educational psychology jargon that is meant to help theatre students teach and to help education majors acquire the skill of using theatre as a tool.

The objective of this session is to engage mathematics teacher educators in a discussion of how to assess an understanding of the concept of multiplication as an operation and its relationships to other operations. The session will begin with a presentation of a previously published study assessing children’s understanding of multiplication as grouping and the relationship between multiplication and addition. The impact of economic rationalism on teachers’ working lives has been documented extensively, particularly in the UK. This article provides a case study of its impact in the early 1990s in a small Australian state, Tasmania, to illustrate that although the particular institutional forms through which it is expressed may differ its impact is similar. We do this by focusing on teachers' stories of change that have stress as a major theme. Stress is partially explained by increased workloads, teachers teaching outside their specialist areas and a changing student population. This paper documents students’ observations and perceptions of their respective teachers’ “performance” within the context of four year nine English classrooms. Drawing upon student interview data – and signalling researcher observations on occasion – it identifies key themes pertaining to the performances of the teachers. The group used Mathematics for High School Teachers: An Advanced Perspective by Usiskin, Peressini, Marchisotto, and Stanley (2003) as the catalyst for the discussion.
