Orchestrating Change At The Departmental Level:, Lari Coakley, Linda Randall

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Academic leaders in higher education must increasingly deal with demands from stakeholders such as students, parents, and government at the same time that they are held accountable for the curriculum and student learning environment (Newman, Couturier & Scurry, 2004; Smith, 2004). In addition, new types of higher education institutions, i.e. the for-profit schools, purport to be more agile in responding to the needs of these various constituencies, putting more pressure on the traditional colleges and universities to react more quickly. Gone are the days of unhurried deliberations and incremental changes that could take years to institute. The loosely coupled organizational …

Methodological Competencies Of Teachers: A Study Of Nigeria, Nwachukwu Ololube

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Secondary schools in Nigeria operate within the guidelines provided by the National Policy on Education (NPE) 1981, revised 1989 (Federal Government of Nigeria, 1989). This document stipulates the objectives of secondary education, the caliber of teachers to teach in them and their qualifications, as well as the curriculum content and methodology to be employed. It is frightening, however, to mention that in spite of the provision in the NPE, lots of problems still hinder secondary school education development in Nigeria. These include among others: acute shortage of the employability of professionally qualified teachers and the recruitment of unqualified and untrained …

Achievement Investment Prowess: Identifying Cost Efficient Higher Performing Maine Public Schools, Ida A. Batista

Maine Education Policy Research Institute

Throughout the United States the debate has been frequent, intense, and at times adversarial over how to fund education adequately. Maine has been trying to identify higher performing schools in the hope that practices that contribute to success at higher performing schools can be adapted at similar schools throughout the state. The 1997 establishment of Essential Programs and Services, an adequacy based funding model, has a primary goal to ensure success for all of Maine's children based on generating and distributing funds more equitably throughout the state. However, identifying higher performing schools based on achievement misses inclusion of fiscal responsibility …

Parents, Guilt, And Forgiveness: The Effects Of Divorce On College Students Attending Private Christian Colleges, Kristin Deal

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

With national divorce statistics on a rise, higher education should consider its approach to meeting the needs of students from these homes. Specifically, faith-based institutions must think about the effects divorce has had on the faith development of students from divorced families. Using individual interviews and a focus group, I researched the experiences and faith development of seven students from divorced homes attending three private Christian institutions in Southern California. The qualitative nature of the study gave voice to the unique stories of these students.
